Peter Lovenkrands was interviewed after the Carling Cup tie at Blackburn last night, which Newcastle lost 4-3, when Givet scored in the last minute of extra time.
Peter Lovenkrands – after scoring extra time penalty
Newcastle were not at their best last night, especially in the first half, but after going two goals down through Rochina and Yakubu, they amazingly scored twice in the five minutes of injury time, and sent the game into extra time.
Both goals were excellent, and the first was a 30 yard shot from Danny Guthrie after 93 minutes, and then Yohan Cabaye put home a 25 yard free kick, with just one minute remaining in the game, for his second goal in successive games for the Tyneside club.
In extra time, Pedersen scored for Blackburn and then Lovenkrands equalized with a penalty, but then right at the death, when it looked like the tie would go to penalties, Givet scored a last minute winner, and Newcastle were out of the competition.
This is what Peter Lovenkrands said when asked whether the lads were disappointed:
“Of course we’re disappointed, especially after coming back that late in the game to get extra-time and then coming back again after going 3-2 down,” Lovenkrands said as he spoke exclusively to nufc.co.uk after the match.”
“I thought in the first half we struggled a bit but in the second half we did well and if a few decisions had gone our way, maybe it would have been a different game.”
“Losing it in the last second, pretty much, is hard to take but that’s football sometimes. It doesn’t always go your way so we just need to focus now and get everyone ready for Monday.”
“The boys did fantastically,” “They were good goals – the free-kick and the shot from Danny as well. I think we deserved to at least get extra-time but then of course, with their defelected goal they went ahead again.”
“Then we got another goal and in the end it was a hard one on us. We were probably expecting it to go to penalties and hope to take it, but it wasn’t to be this time.”
“But we won’t sit with our head in our lap and cry about it. We need to move on and focus on Stoke. That’s an important game and it can take us further ahead in the league if we get a good result.”
“So we need to regroup, get everybody fit and ready and then focus on that.”
Newcastle have had the run of the green in many of their games this season, but they didn’t get it last night.
But who would have thought in August that it would be late October before this Newcastle side suffered their very first defeat of the season?
Not many.
But now we have to make sure it’s not two defeats in a row at Stoke City on Monday evening, and that now becomes an even more important game for Newcastle.
Howay The Lads!!

Comment #41We shouldn’t let this defeat stop the positive feeling around the club! Tough games coming so let’s keep the faith…
