There was news today that Liverpool may bid for Newcastle center-back Fabricio Coloccini, and that’s been followed by news that Manchester United may be interested in Newcastle’s central midfielder Cheick Tiote.
Cheick Tiote – after scoring sensational goal against Arsenal
With Newcastle 4th in the league table and playing really well, it’s not really surprising that Newcastle’s top players will get some attention from the bigger clubs in England.
Tiote joined Newcastle from FC Twente for £3.5M a year last August, and he has been a star for the Newcastle side ever since.
And Cheick scored that dramatic 89th minute equalizer against Arsenal last February, to get a 4-4 draw with Arsenal, when Newcastle famously came back to score four goals in the last 25 minutes of that game.
Tiote himself turned down a last day move to Chelsea last January, so we don’t know if his response to Manchester United would be any different. And he was also rewarded in February with a stellar six year contract at Newcastle.
Indeed, Tiote is forming one of the best central midfield partnerships in the Premier League with Frenchman Yohan Cabaye, and he is also not getting booked so much this season, which is also good.
Manchester United would like to improve their engine room – central midfield – after being dominated by Manchester City in the 6-1 hammering they received from their neighbors at Old Trafford last weekend.
It remains to be seen what the Red Devils would offer for Tiote, but we know that every player has their price on Tyneside.
But there will also come a time when Mike Ashley will want to keep his best players, so the team can get back into Europe, and become one of the best teams in England again.
And if they do that the money will be rolling into the Tyneside club, there’s no doubt about that, and Newcastle seem to be in good financial shape at the moment.
So it looks like Newcastle will be tempted once again with some big offers coming in for the their best players in January, and we’ll just have to wait and see what the club’s response will be this time around.
What do you think?

Comment #4We should sell Tiote, he was so poor at the start of the season, and he isn’t picking up every MOTM there is.
Get rid.

Comment #5Why not just get rid of Colo, Krul, Tiote and place HBA and Santon on the transfer Market, they all need to improve and havent done much! While we’re at it, we should just release Cabaye, he has only scored a couple of goals 😛

Comment #7I really, really don’t want to create a debate or an argument over this but how can a Newcastle United fan possibly want to see us sell Tiote, or even think it would be acceptable, how?
The most important thing is the team, and selling Tiote would make the team a lot worse, it’s really as simple as that.

Comment #11Every single one of these so called top teams do not have a better destroyer in their midfield:
Man United – Fletcher/Anderson
Manchester City – De Jong
Chelsea – John Obi-Mikel
Arsenal – Song
Liverpool – Lucas
Tottenham – Parker
For me none of them are as good as Tiote, and this is why it comes at no surprise, that Man U or any other top team would be interested in signing him.

Comment #19Tiote will be signed for a top club when he stops losing the ball in dangerous areas because of his turns. Got caught twice v wigan doing it but he is the heartbeat of our team. It is no surprise that when he didn’t play well v Wigan the whole team struggled to get going. Great player and more valuable to the team then any of the players we have sold.

Comment #21Got to remember, Pards is quoted saying we denied several huge bids for Carroll before the big one came in.
It took a ridicoulus ammount to get him, how much bigger shouldn’t it be for a Tiote who’s got 5 years left on contract and is a proven world beater.
I’d say between £40-50 mill…

Comment #27Sorry poor, poor judgement by me if it was a joke, deary me I’m ashamed. I put part of the blame on one my friends, down here in Surrey (Arsenal fan) who constantly goes on about how, if you take Cabaye and Tiote out of our team, were a 17th-10th type of team. And how if you put those two in the Arsenal team, Arsenal would easily be in the top four etc.

Comment #28NOT FOR SALE! as simple as that!!!
A solid, strong, loyal and looks like a very good person – player, and we are even thinking here on the blog if to sell him for 20 or 40 millions?
First of all, they won’t offer more then 15M, that is for sure, Man U are not Man C and not Chelsea, and even if they do offer 20,25, or 30 million, who will we buy instead? He is proven, seteled, gelled and a good lad, why would we want to sell him? no one can promise that instead of him we will get a better one.
Also, every player makes mistakes, so his are sometimes the tackles and the passing, he is improving still. Jonas is 5 times the player he was when he came here.
Messi, Ronaldo and every other player in the world got issues, problems and mistakes (the two I mentioned are super selfish sometimes and it cost their teams more goals, it is just that they have a very strong back bone so it doesn’t effect the end product for these teams, but for us it will).
We shouldn’t even be thinking about selling our best players this season, no no no!
We need to build on those foundations and not changing them.
And I am sorry to say this, maybe some won’t agree, but the NUFC symbol and the club are maybe bigger then any player, but the players are still a big part of it and we should give respect to players who understand that and try to give their best out there, specially if they are doing a good job.

Comment #37We just wouldn’t be the same without Tiote. Guthrie does give it a good go but he just isn’t Cheik. I can’t see us being able to replace him for the £20m we would get for him! The only players close to his standard would be almost if not the full £20m or maybe more! We wouldn’t pay there wages either. Very bad idea to sell him in my opinion!

Comment #38According to the last set of financial figures we had broken even and that hadn’t taken into account player transfers….was that true?
If that was the case what would be the point in selling Tiote…that kind of manouevre would’t compliment the so-called 5 year plan for the club in terms of on-field ambitions. Saying that i reckon it’s on the cards he will end up at Man utd and we won’t see him after the ACN.
Just gotta hope Abeid progresses quickly coz i sure as hell don’t wanna see Scott Brown as Tiote’s replacement.

Comment #40Selling Tiote would obviously be very bad for the team. However, selling him for 3,4,5 times his buying price would make absolute sense to Ashley and any other businessman.
