The news in the Newcastle Journal today is the the club do not want to sell their captain Fabricio Coloccini.
Fabricio Coloccini – very well liked Newcastle captain
There were reports yesterday, and not for the first time, that Liverpool are now circling Newcastle players once again, this time with their eyes on the Newcastle captain, and maybe even Ryan Taylor as well.
Colo is currently in talks with Newcastle on a contract extension, and he is well liked by everybody associated with the Newcastle club, including the manager, coaches and the two men at the top too – Mike Ashley and Derek LLambias.
And the news on the contract negotiation is that they are proceeding well, and there is now ill will on either side, like there was with the Joey Barton negotiations.
Manager Alan Pardew must be a little fed up with losing his best players, as he certainly didn’t want to lose Carroll, Nolan, Enrique and Barton this year, which is what happened.
Colo wants to stay at Newcastle and the chances must be good that he will sign a new deal.
But even if he signs a new deal, that doesn’t stop Liverpool from coming in for him in January, although they will then have to pay top dollar for the Argentine, who turns 30 on January 22nd.
Coloccini’s wages are said to be around £80K/week and he will need to take a drop in wages, in the extension that is being negotiated past the summer of 2013, when his current deal runs out.
You can bet his contract is based on a number of incentives, and dependent on how Newcastle do, principally in the Premier League, but with the squad that Alan Pardew has amassed over the last year, things are looking good for Newcastle at the moment.
Newcastle fans are still fearful if Liverppol come in with a daft offer for their captain, as they did with Carroll in January, then Ashley could sell, because we know every player has their price at the club, and a sizable offer for any player could see Mike Ashley sell.
This is what Alan Pardew told the local press about Colo:
“He has been outstanding for us as a captain and a player,” “We’re in negotiations with him on a new contract.”
“Liverpool like looking at our players, don’t they? But I don’t really want to add any more than that.”
Colo’s Argentine team mate Jonas Gutierrez signed a new deal at Newcastle recently, and the inside news is that the Argentine would really like to sign a new deal to stay on Tyneside.
It will be terrific news if Colo does sign that new deal – and soon too.
