The Sunday Sun is reporting today that Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini is not a Liverpool target in January.
Fab Coloccini – after scoring late extra time winner at Nottingham Forest
There have been reports over the last week that Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is keen to shore up his defense, and news had circulated that Colo was a target.
If that news is true then it will be welcome relief for Newcastle fans, since we don’t want to lose any of our top players in the January transfer window.
He’s said to be too old and doesn’t fit into the younger players the Reds want to bring into the side, and their real target is Steven Taylor.
Just kidding. 😀
The Sunday Sun is reporting that Newcastle have offered the 34 times capped Argentine International an extended deal to stay on Tyneside past his current contract, which end a year come June.
Fabricio is on around £80K/week on Tyneside, and he is currently the highest paid player, and it will be interesting to see what offer Newcastle have made their well-liked captain.
Of course Coloccini is also in great form for the Magpies, and since he became captain in July and took over from the departed Kevin Nolan, his form has been top class.
Both parties wanted to seal the deal quickly, but apparently the talks are still ongoing and the two parties are trying to reach an agreement.
The relationships both in the Newcastle dressing room and in the Board Room have improved this season, and the news is that Newcastle want to strike a deal fairly quickly, to keep the popular Argentine on Tyneside.
We really want to see players like Colo staying on Tyneside, especially since he’s almost a cult hero at Newcastle, and our current captain, so here’s hoping.
For the record Colo has played 127 times for Newcastle with 5 goals.
