Newcastle Again Linked With Top Senegal Striker

News today that Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are fighting it out for Lille striker Moussa Sow.

Moussa Sow – are Newcastle interested?

Sow had an excellent season last season playing for the eventual French Champions, and since Newcastle were watching Yohan Cabaye, who joined them in the summer for a bargain €5M price tag, they will know all about Moussa Sow.

The Senegal international striker finished as top goalscorer last season with 25 goals,  and so far has 8 goals in 19 appearances this season for Lille in all competitions, and has attracted attention from some big clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs.

But we’re not sure this report in Caughoffside has much truth to it, and the news that seems more accurate is that Newcastle have already agreed a deal to buy Modibo Maiga from Sochaux for around £6M, and the Tyneside club will triple the 24 year-old Mali International’s wages.

But with Demba Ba looking such a good goalscorer this season with 8 goals in 11 appearances for Newcastle, and Leon Best having improved further this season, Newcastle should be fine with just one new striker coming in during the January transfer window.

Newcastle have been linked with a number of strikers they could possibly go for in January,  and they also include 21 year-old Luuk de Jong of FC Twente and 26 year-old Papiss Demba Cisse of SC Freiburg.

Pappis Demba Cisse is another Senegal International, who has hit 37 goals in 50 appearances for the German club since the 26 year-old joined them from Metz in early January last year.

So Newcastle are after some good strikers, and while this report could be true,  it seems as though Maiga will be the one arriving in January.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Only worry is that they players will arrive in January, not meet the team, go straight to the ACN and then not be able to train with us until their respective countries are out of the competition during which, they could of course suffer an injury.

Am I being silly here/does it seem like a bit of a gamble payign for a player that you won’t see for a month and may come back with an injury?

I would be chuffed if we signed Sow and Maiga. Can’t see the board spashing out over 20m on 2 strikers aswell as paying for a LB & a CB, unlsess LB & CB cover is one low price player covering both roles for example Liam Ridgewell!

Even if we did buy both Sow & Maiga we still don’t have sufficient cover of strikers during jan! Will we be looking to loan a non ACON striker or will we be crossing our fingers, toes & everything else that between Best,Hba & loven (Shola & Sammy may be at the ACON with Nigeria)we can make up for the loss of Ba & those 2?

Don’t know if it’s true, but wouldn’t it be great for Sow to choose us over the Spuds.
I reckon he would – unless he wanted to be based in London and, if that’s the reason he would choose the Spuds over us – better to avoid him anyway.

Just read Loverman is going at the end of his contract. So we’ll probably try to sell him in jan to get some cash back from the couple of seasons wages we paid him. So this loan idea may have to be followed up.

If the club does sign two strikers in January, I think they’d be crazy to sign a couple of guys who would both be away at ACON. By all means get Maiga OR Sow + maybe Luuk de Jong, but surely not Maiga AND Sow.

If Lovenkrands does leave in Jan, and with Ranger probably also gone by then (or possibly in jail?), we could end up with just 5 recognised senior strikers –
eg. Maiga, Sow, Ba, Best & Shola
with 3 of them away in Africa, leaving only Best and Shola available (with a reasonable chance that one or both of them could be crocked!).

Why on earth should we even be thinking about temporary loan deals for that time of the year when we can easily avoid being in that sort of situation in the first place?

We have a number of options in January. Ba is going to be at the ACON so we need to bring in one striker on a permanent deal and possibly another on loan. Permanent strikers in my opinion could be either Maiga or Luuk de Jong or Gignac but i still think we’ll need another option so maybe bring in Macheda on loan.

In the summer Lovenkrands and Ranger will probably go so we could then go for another striker so people like Sow or Cisse or maybe Kalou (as his contract expires this summer) and of course any of the others i said maybe we do not go for in January. Are strike force would then be Ba, Best, Ameobi with either Sow, Cisse, Kalou, de Jong, Maiga or Gignac.

As well in January i reckon we should bring in Liam Ridgewell so he can provide decent cover for LB and CB but also a central midfielder would be good as well e.g. Sulley Muntari or Marvin Martin or Javi Martinez.

maiga or hoilett would do me nicely , i,d rather see hoilett come to us , he looks class and he would,nt be in many competitions with him being from canada, his contract talks have stalled so i think he wants out of blackburn andhis contract finishes next summer so a few mill in jan could bring in another top drawer player

the problem with all these African strikers is that we need a striker when Demba Ba goes to play the African Cup of Nations. Really hope we get Luke De Jong looks like quality and would take care of the missing striker when Ba goes play for his country
