News today that Northumbria Police have arrested two teenagers in connection with racial abuse that was sent to Sammy Ameobi’s twitter account.
Sammy Ameobi – racially abused on twitter
The Newcastle United club had posted a message earlier this week saying their 19 year-old player had told them he had been racially abused on his Twitter account.
It was good to see Newcastle act so quickly, and that happened on Monday, and the police seem to have moved quickly, which is very good to see.
There was very little news in the Newcastle statement, but more news is now coming out about what was said in the tweets.
Sammy was called by the “n” word by a person who had a twitter account with the username of @JonnnnyPhipps, after the Newcastle winger has tweeted a photo of a black pair of football boots.
The attacker’s account has now been closed down.
Ameobi had posted a message alongside the photo of the black Nike boots, saying:
“There will always be a place in my heart for the all blacks.”
And to that the abuser replied:
“Your hand is nearly the same colour. n*****”
Sammy then re-tweeted the message, and added:
“Sad to see some people are still racist nowadays.”
A Northumbria Police spokesman said this today:
“On Wednesday November 2 Northumbria Police arrested two young men, both aged 17, on suspicion of malicious communication.
“The arrests come after reports of a racist tweet being sent to one of the region’s professional sportsmen.”
The Newcastle manager Alan Pardew added these comments:
“We represent the local community here and when something like this happens we have to react strongly. We will not tolerate any type of behaviour like that.”
“With the austerity measures and everybody feeling a bit tight, everybody is feeling a bit narrow-minded and racism is coming to the fore, so maybe it is not a bad thing.”
“We have been leading the world, the football world, in terms of dealing with it and maybe we should not become complacent in keeping a lid on it.”
Good words from Alan Pardew and it is a little distressing that racism still raises its ugly head in football.
Of course it doesn’t help one little bit that the England captain John Terry has been accused of using the “n” word to Anton Ferdinand in a recent game, and when Sky Sports have been showing the alleged comments by Terry, they cover up John’s lips.
Why?
That seems to suggest that you can lip read what he is saying.
If John Terry is found guilty he should be removed from the England captaincy and banned from the game for a suitable time period.
By that means people will realize football is serious about getting rid of racism from the game, and that society is too.
There is no room for racial prejudice in today’s world, and the sooner people come to the conclusion we are all basically the same the better things will be.
We come in different colors with different backgrounds, depending on where we were brought up, and if we can all accept that, then the world will be a better place to live in.

Comment #41Aye, the pundits will now saying we’ll lose our next game EVERY game.
I have confidence in a win against Everton, but AP gives credit where credit is due, and Moyes is an excellent tactitian, if he had the money, he’d be contending with SAF every season for the top spot.
If someone can find our weak spots and exploit them, it’s certainly Moyes, no doubt.
However, we have spirit, resillience and a never say die attitude.
I think the game will be a fighter, much bigger than any other teams so far.
Ofc, Everton can have off days, but i wouldn’t bet on it.
We’re on form now, it’s not “luck” or easy teams helping us win.
We’ll have to use pace and vision for the Everton game, and we have that in our midfield and offense.
Only way to beat Everton is to exploit holes, there’ll be no muscling through on this one.

Comment #44Check out on the net what Bellamy had to say about Terry a couple of years ago! Together with his talent and passion, that’s what I liked about that guy: brutal honesty! On the Lawro prediction, when will he ever learn that we will disappoint him? Anyway, hoping for a clear victory this Sat. 2 more than Everton.

Agree – the pundits are just playing the percentage game – we are due a loss so its going to be every game.
Everton have played a lot of top teams and are in an artificially low position. Moyes is a top manager no doubt and it will be as tough as Stoke but we can win it as Pards is showing a lot of tactical nouse himself.
Great if Marv starts but Obertan has been great at tracking back so we’ll still need to provide the cover somehow.
Don’t think HBA fully match fit but great as impact sub.

Comment #48Forgot to comment on Ober. Sweet cross last week. Still, agree with many here that we should get the exciting chance to see HBA and Marveaux from the start. But, AP is probably going to be more cautious, playing Guthrie for a half. Then, depending on how it’s going, throw in both the aforementioned at 46′. Sammy on in the last 10.

From the little i’ve seen, Marv tracks back quite well when needed, and that was on the right side aswell.
I can’t for the love of me remember what team i saw him do that a bit against, but it was a sub appearance.
What annyoes me is this:
If u win in lottery once, u still have the exact same chance as everyone else to win again next time.
The pundits have had us losing quite a few games now, and this “pressure” they keep talking about is obviously piling up.
To them, we’re like Hull: They too stacked up 20 points in the first 10 matches, but ended up at 17th the same season.
But that’s what they’re looking at isn’t it, not the 10 other times, the top 4 teams after 10 rounds stay top 5/6.
Drives me mad.

Comment #50Stinks that Oba’s injured, but it’ll give someone else a chance. We shouldn’t be worried about Everton, I mean, we could lose, but we have a good team and we’re at home. Not much to be worried about. As long as the lads come out firing from the opening whistle. We can’t mess around like we did with Wigan.
The whole racism this is ridiculous, granted, but unfortunately it’s human nature. We are all human, and we all have souls. Everything outside of that makes us unique, not inferior. The attitude stems from the idea that if you can’t defeat someone’s argument then you attack his character. Criticizing someone’s football ability based on examples and video footage is one thing, criticizing him because of the color of his skin, which no one can control anyway is pointless. If someone stinks at football, his skin color has nothing to do with that.

Comment #52My feeling is that Ben Arfa and Santon will have to be worked into the starting team soon or they will start to become very unhappy. Pardew has made a lot of glowing statements about how good Ben Arfa is so he will have to play him or face the consequences. We have played fantastically well so far but we can improve by bringing Ben Arfa and Santon in. Our weakest links are Simpson at RB and sometimes a lack of attacking play from the midfield. So why not Santon at RB and Ben Arfa in behind Best and Ba in a 4-3-1-2 formation at home at least to start? Bring in Marveaux as a sub if Ben Arfa is struggling and play 4-4-2, but we must give Ben Arfa a good stretch of playing time now after everything that has been said about him.

Comment #54If anyone’s interested, there is an interesting Europa League match due to start at 8pm this evening, FC Twente vs Odense. It is interesting because of Luuk de Jong, a very promising striker who has been linked with us, and it seems that he will be playing. I’d much rather sign this lad than Maiga. de Jong has scored 12 goals in 21 games this season…

Comment #55Why get angry about what Lawrenson thinks? Waste of time if you ask me. All the BBC “pundits”, bar Dixon, and complete wastes of space.
Alan Hansen gets £40,000 an episode of MOTD, and all he does is boast about not knowing anything about continental football, and talk about how it was in “his day”.
