There have been some recent articles out suggesting that Huddersfield Town striker Jordan Rhodes could be a Newcastle target.
Jordan Rhodes – are Newcastle really interested?
The Oldham-born player who is the son of the former Barnsley and Oldham Athletic player and current Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeping coach, Andy Rhodes.
Certainly he has been knocking in the goals for Lee Clark since he signed for Huddersfield in the summer of 2009 on a four year deal from Ipswich Town .
Since joining the Terriers he has scored 60 goals in 113 appearances and including loan spells at Oxford, Rochdale and Brentford the lad has 68 goals in 139 appearances so far in his career.
The 21 year-old 6’1″ Englishman is being consdiered for the full Scotland team after he represented the Scottish Under 21 side five times with 5 goals this year.
His qualification for Scotland is because he attended school there for more than five years, while his father was playing in Scotland.
That’s another new one on us, and goes along with you can play for Scotland if you can down threee Scotch whiskies in one minute – another dubious qualification for the Scotland team. 😀
Jordan has been in prolific form this season, and has 14 goals in 13 appearances for Huddersfield.
The news is that Huddersfield value the striker at £5M, but we don’t know if this story linking Jordan with Newcastle has much truth to it.
But it does seem that Newcastle are still interested in 27 year-old Liam Ridgwell, the Birmingham center-back, who would cost around £2M and he could bolster the Newcastle squad for the run-in to this season.
And Newcastle are still being linked with 21 year-old Junior Hoilett of Blackburn Rovers, who becomes a free agent in the summer, but new news is that Stoke will try to get the player in January by out-bidding both Newcastle and Tottenham.
Blackburn have foolishly put a price tag of £18M on the player, who is available for nothing in the summer, as if any club would pay daft money like that six months before they could get him for nothing.
If Newcastle are really interested in the two 21 year-olds Rhodes and Hoilett, don’t be surprised if both of them end up at Newcastle, as the Magpies are starting to get very adept at getting the players they really want.
But remember that Newcastle are also being linked with 24 year-old Modibo Maiga of Sochaux, and Luuk de Jong of FC Twente, the 21 year-old Dutch International striker.
Whoever Newcastle are really after in the next transfer window, it will help enormously if Newcastle can remain in the top six in the Premier League before January rolls around.

Spot on. Let’s make sure the defenders nearing contract renewal get priority. Simpson might be much criticised on here but he is playing regularly in the meanest defence in the league and deserves a new contract. Guthrie has a real future here and Colo needs resigning asap. After that worry about new players. Would prefer De Jong as Maiga seems to be similar to Best/Ba. Ridgewell adds nothing but okay as backup. As soon as Williamson ois fit again we’ll have a bit more cover but if we’re playing a passing game based on a rock solid back four and great CMs in front of them then we must keep Guthrie and bolster the defensive cover first. We only really need one CF not two….and we’ve got real talent coming through too.
Jury’s out still but Perch could come good with the coaching the lads are getting now from Pards and crew.

Comment #13Let’s be realistic, the three will be Ridgwell (£2M), Scott Allan (£450,00m) and Maiga (£6M). I would be happy with this signings because we would continue with our policy of buying cheap players. I do not think we will spend more than £10M in january.

Comment #14Scott Allan will be the other player because his contract it’s about to end, he is a CM and will provide back up in january.

Comment #16I know it’s far away but with only 7/8 games till January now, do you think we will strengthen our squad with a new number 9? One year on from AC?
I saw an article that Berbatov is free at the end of the season and Galatasary are thinking about putting a £7.5m bid in.
Do you think it’s a gamble, £8m Berba?
Good Prem record, massive Toon fan and would jump at the chance to be our number 9 if only for two seasons?
He turns 31 in Jan, but considering he’s never had pace does he’s age matter? Doesn’t get injured that often.
Could kick us on for a European push if we are still in the mix.
Berba, Ba, Ben Arfa, Besty. See ya Lovenkrands.

Comment #17Can’t see MA going for Berba. Where’s the resale value? I think it is too early to be commenting on who we might be getting/should be getting. We have the 3 biggest games of the season so far (other than the mackems) in the next 3 weeks. I think after those games when we know where we are in the league, and can have some more realistic ambitions for the remainder of the season, we can start predicting who we might be in for in january.

Comment #18Maiga & Ridgewell (for a combined cost of around 9m) look pretty nailed on for january.
i have only 1 problem with this, who will be upfront with Best if we don’t buy a non african striker aswell?
Lovens leaving us so not him.
Shola can be a liability over 90mins but is a good impact sub. Most people say let Hba do it but i have my doubts about him in this role now(i think he’s a winger in denial ha ha)!
finally Everyone says oh Sammy’s too young! Sammy’s a better winger etc… my understanding of it, is there basically saying they think he’s a poor striker. So who’s left?

Comment #19I’d rather get anelka in, if we are going to stay in the same train of thought on signing superstars who’s careers are winding down. yes he’s getting on with little or no resale value but he still has pace, skill & strength, not to mention what he could teach our up and coming young forwards! Anelka’s been there, done it (sulks, globetrotting etc..) & won pretty much the lot.

Comment #22There is no re-sale value in Berba, I admit that.
But having one player who is known around the world, a class act, who could probably handle the 9 expectations
Might even give him some motivation to show SAF he’s still got it.
No matter how well Best n Ba play, they will never wear the Toon 9.
Mike might just be thinking about how he might sell a couple more shirts/match tickets as well.
£8m isn’t much to lose when you’ve couped £35 for AC.
Smith/Lovenkrands off to wage bill would free up money.
I’d take Berba over Anelka any day of the week.

Comment #23Signing Berbatov would be a huge regression. He is old and expensive. See the signs we made this summer, don’t they teach you anything ? I would be very happy with the signings of Maiga, Ridgwell and Scott Allan because they would show that success didn’t made our mind up. Signing this three now and Hoilett to a pre-contract in nominal fee around £4M and january would be a very nice transfer month.

Comment #25Think about it : Maiga £6M, Ridgwell £2M, Scott Allan £450,000m, Hoilett (for january in a pre-contract) £4M.
Four good players for a total of £12,5M and at least three of them are bargains.

Comment #28We just need to think about giving new contracts to our current players before we buy anyone in! I don’t care if Smith, Ranger, Perch, Xisco or Lovenkrands leave. If we sign 1 or 2 defenders, 1 midfielder and 1 striker in the transfer window I think we’ll be sorted for the rest of the season 🙂
