Steve Harper Extends Loan at Brighton and Hove Albion

New today that Steve Harper will extend his loan deal at Brighton until January.

Steve Harper – on loan at Brighton

Steve initially went on a month long loan spell to Brighton, but of course he’s a good and experienced goalkeeper and it hasn’t taken Brighton manager Gus Poyet long to realize that.

Harper has so far made 4 appearances for Brighton and Gus had said the loan was initially to be through January, but that was changed at the last moment.

This is what he said to the local Argus newspaper yesterday:

“The idea in the beginning was it would be up to January,”  “For some reason, in the last few hours of negotiations, it changed to only a month.”

“I don’t like a month because players get used to how you play then go back, so I was as surprised as anyone.”

“I was convinced it was for almost three months. It’s very difficult to explain the reasons but it happened.”

“I know it is difficult when somebody is on a short loan and they are a long way from home, so there are things we need to manage.”

“We want the players to be happy here.”

And there’s news today that Steve will indeed stay at Brighton until January, and that leaves Rob Elliot as the number two goalkeeper at Newcastle, and presumably the still untested Elliot would come in if Tim Krul was injured.

Presumably another better option would be to recall Steve Harper from Brighton in the event of Krul being injured, because Steve is a Premier League goalkeeper – proven and tested – and Ron hasn’t  yet played in the Premier League.

We haven’t seen much of Elliot in action to be fair, but he didn’t look impressive in the 4-3 Carling Cup win at Nottingham Forest in his only appearance so far for the first team last September.

Another Newcastle player, 20 year-old Kazenga LuaLua is also on loan at Brighton until January, and he has so far made 10 appearances  for the Championship club this season with no goals.

What do you think?

heard the news last night and although quite shocked, i see the logic behind it. if this is guna help us push forward as a football club, then im all for it.

Mike Ashley may not have a clue about football, but he is a shrewd business man… he’s learning, he’s made good calls and bad calls. if u asked me would i like to keep our stars or would i like to keep the name of our stadium?…. as much as i love the name and will always refer 2 it as…. im sorry but i love my team 2 much! onwards and upwards!
