An excellent result for some of us English fans this afternoon, as the England team put in an excellent defensive display to beat current World and European Champions Spain 1-0 at Wembley.
Frank Lampard heads home the winner on 49 minutes
And it was a bit of a fairy tale for England captain for the day, Frank Lampard, who headed in the winner on 49 minutes.
The was after a Darren Bent header had hit the post and beaten goalkeeper Pepe Reina. from a left wing free kick taken by former Newcastle winger James Milner.
The ball seemed to be drifting into the goal, but Frank Lampard was on hand to head the ball home, just to make absolutely sure for his 23rd goal in 82 appearances for England – not too bad at all.
But Spain had dominated much of this game, at least as far as possession was concerned, especially in the first half and after England had scored, but the Wold Champions couldn’t create too many clear cut chances, and the two good late chances they did create were both missed by former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas.
And England had the luck too, as David Villa hit the post after 73 minutes, before Chelsea striker Fernando Torres was introduced to some cat-calls from the England fans.
But it was the back four who did very well for England today, and especially the two center backs, Everton’s Phil Jagielka and Man City’s Joleon Lescott, who both had excellent games in the heart of the English defense.
Spain started the game in ominous form, as England hardly got a touch of the ball in the first ten minutes of the game.
And then when they did get the ball they tried to attack quickly on the break, but too many times, especially after England had scored in the second half, they put long balls forward and gave up possession too easily to Spain, who piled on the pressure in those last 20 minutes.
But for the two chances that Cesc Fabregas got very late in the game, after he had been introduced as a sub, and a David Villa shot that came back off the upright, Spain didn’t create too many open chances, and it was a brave rearguard effort from the England side today.
Darren Bent did very well to get his header in that led to Frank Lampard’s goal
And they looked almost as good as the Newcastle defense today, and that’s a huge compliment of course. 😀
And in truth England in this game were not unlike the way Newcastle have played in many of their games this season, as the win was based on a brave and solid performance from the the defense.
A very good display and even better result for England, and it was Spain’s only second loss in their last 46 games, the other being to the USA.
And of those 46 games they have won 42, so a really good result by England this afternoon.
Maybe we do have a chance in the European Championships next summer?
Nah, I’m getting carried away again.
Here’s some video of the game including the goal.

Comment #45Have you took a knock on the head, davy? You have to be ignoring the patently obvious facts that lay right in front of you because, honestly, I refuse to believe you’re actually stupid.
Look at what he is saying – this is the man in charge of day to day decisions of OUR club and all you can say is “he’s right”. Look at the players we have shipped out, what they have had to say, how they have all left under a veil of discontent – you honestly don’t think, or can even make the connection, that this could be down to your beloved board being “horrible bast*rds”?

Comment #47u lot contradict yaself one hand you say ashly is driving by money and the other you say he wants to destroy us well surely if hes driving by money then is best way of making it is to make us successful as then he could sell us for triple what he paid so u lot need to make ya mind up its either money or destroying us because the 2 dont go together

Comment #48“Shearer was crap as manager”
…do you not think the massive amounts of unrest at the club could have had something with his results? The fact that absolutely every player who played under Shearer praises him?
Brick walls are more receptive than you are.

Comment #49Cant change the name of the park and its been St James park for over 300 years.Iits a place name ..get it ?.
The bit that they play on is part of the herbage of the Town Moor and that is also the park land that makes up St James park . Just like Leazes Park .savvy ?..Newcastle City Council are now digging away at the old royal charter and the 1988 town moor act .
I instigated it with a discussion with the legal team last week.
Question : Ed can we now have a poll to see as to how many people on here work for Sports Direct ? as I’m sure there are at least 36% percent of the Bas tard’s on here.

the only way to be successful in football is on the pitch. If we were in europe every year we would rake in more than the 10 million needed by selling off the ground rights. We will never build on the players we have cos they will be sold for a profit.

Comment #52Hey davy, when you look around our stadium, what is it that you see?
Hints:
-On your ticket
-On the Gallowgate roof
-On the advertising hoardings
-On the LCD screens
-On the East Stand
He’ll hang on to us long enough to get his money back while making all the money he can from advertising. All you need for this is to look at NUFC since he came in and then look around the stadium.
Making money.

Comment #54@Online Guy: No, I know what you’re saying. The pitch and the foundations is “St. James’ Park” but the bricks and mortar is not part of Leazes Park outside of location only, he can call that whatever he wants, it’s a mere technicality that the pitch and everything below ground is SJP.
My ex used to work at Sports Direct. She described it as “soul crushing” haha

Comment #58@davytoon I didnt mean kk was better then SBR cause we all know that aint true we all know SBR is probly the best manager we have had. What I meant was that newcastle wudnt be a world known club if it wasnt for what keegan started (the entertainers) and no matter how good ur next managers are he wudnt of attracted the players he did cause the players wudnt of though the club was good enough (he wud of attracted sum players but if alex ferguson went and managed darlington rooney wudnt want to go there)
people arent argueing that shearer was a great manager we all know he wasnt, he needs lower league experience and then he can come back.. maybe help out are youth like beardsly, what people dislike is the fact llambias thinks he can get away with anything, by saying bad things about our legends, it just proves he doesnt care about the history of our team.
next up is SBR and our number 9 shirt… then our shirts will be sponserd by sports direct and there will be no more players… MA will have his cash back and a new advertisement for in the middle east.
how about we skip MA for know and just try and get rid of llambias? I know we really dont like both we all agree MA is going no where… but surely he will sit easier with fans being happier
joey barton was told no new contract and he shud leave ( EVEN a FREE transfer) because he said the truth about newcastle’s board(critcsing them), KK got fired for not agreeing with the board(2nd time)
so why does llambias get away with this?? he shudnt he spoke the “truth” (according to some of u) about our club which makes fans even UNHAPPIER then they were, double standerds?? yes unless I see DL fired in the next few weeks… well I cant do anything but I thing we as a group shud.
this week the mackems and the smoggies have looked down on us… our proud st james park changed names and our legends are getting kicked in the balls…. I bet shearer wudnt of played for us if he knew this is what u wud think of him (he prob wud cause he is that loyal but thats not the point)
SBR is turning in his grave…

Comment #59No, davy, I have an understanding of causality – cause and effect. I’m not saying he’s a good or a bad manager; I’m saying that he disnt have enough time to make an impact.
Lest we forget that Sir Bobby didn’t have a great start to his career at SJP (nor his career for that matter).
See how I justified and explained my opinion? Now you try and do the same.

Comment #63All this goes to show ids Llambias is a loudmouthed lout who gets careless when he’s had a beer too many. Its hardly earth-shattering stuff. He’s come out with worse and done worse in his tenure in the NE. Ashley is the only one who can sack him and he’s not going to do it because they need each other and can use one another. That’s the way these people think. He thinks he owns the place – and he’s right. They are maintaining a long tradition of Chairmen and owners who looked after themselves first and Newcastle United second.

Comment #67U can critisize them but if u do do it for what they did wrong… 9-games is not good enough to judge a manager… not only 9games but 9 games when we were pretty much relegated changed managers like 4 times in one season… our players were unsetteld and unhappy, even if alex ferguson had taken charge in the last 9 games he wudnt of done much better.
and he says he is arrogant, he doesnt seem arrogant to me… helping charities, never saying… I’m the best thats ever lived, england cant/cudnt cope with out me(*cough rooney) now rooney is arrogant shearer is not…

It might be that he can rename the bricks and mortar that he owns but he cant rename the parkland that they play on .. It comes under Herbage and place name on Town Moor land, I would argue .
It would have been good idea to rename the stands after company’s and sponsors IE: The Durex stand ..might have made our defence even better …!
(saving all the shots !)
Seriously though Kidder..naming the stands would have been better and would have kept the prestige of
St James’ Park (Apostro included for the grammatical debaters)
Imaging if you will/might… The Virgin Media stand ..the Gallowgate might become the Microsoft stand etc Thus maintaining the name of the ground and the prestige of St James’Park . whilst gaining extra sponsorship !.
What think Thump ?

Comment #79he said KK’s head was all over the place… yet if I rember correctly he saved us from 3rd league football and got us as runners up in the top league… definatly a sign of “he is all over the f*** place”
he said shearer was arrogant, I have nothing else to add to what I said earlier about that
he said CH was a puppet ( never fought back) If I rember correctly CH was telling them not to sell carrol days before he got fired… pardew got the job and hey carrol was gone… ok carrol wanted to leave BUT why do they want a manager who will fight back when they didnt let KK make a decison when he was in charge…
the only person who’s head is all over the place is llambias… I cant see MA being happy with him, MA knows we will hav a hard time getting over the stadium, thats why he did it now whilst we are high and not later in the season, the last thing he wanted was someone to piss us off more :S
