An excellent result for some of us English fans this afternoon, as the England team put in an excellent defensive display to beat current World and European Champions Spain 1-0 at Wembley.
Frank Lampard heads home the winner on 49 minutes
And it was a bit of a fairy tale for England captain for the day, Frank Lampard, who headed in the winner on 49 minutes.
The was after a Darren Bent header had hit the post and beaten goalkeeper Pepe Reina. from a left wing free kick taken by former Newcastle winger James Milner.
The ball seemed to be drifting into the goal, but Frank Lampard was on hand to head the ball home, just to make absolutely sure for his 23rd goal in 82 appearances for England – not too bad at all.
But Spain had dominated much of this game, at least as far as possession was concerned, especially in the first half and after England had scored, but the Wold Champions couldn’t create too many clear cut chances, and the two good late chances they did create were both missed by former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas.
And England had the luck too, as David Villa hit the post after 73 minutes, before Chelsea striker Fernando Torres was introduced to some cat-calls from the England fans.
But it was the back four who did very well for England today, and especially the two center backs, Everton’s Phil Jagielka and Man City’s Joleon Lescott, who both had excellent games in the heart of the English defense.
Spain started the game in ominous form, as England hardly got a touch of the ball in the first ten minutes of the game.
And then when they did get the ball they tried to attack quickly on the break, but too many times, especially after England had scored in the second half, they put long balls forward and gave up possession too easily to Spain, who piled on the pressure in those last 20 minutes.
But for the two chances that Cesc Fabregas got very late in the game, after he had been introduced as a sub, and a David Villa shot that came back off the upright, Spain didn’t create too many open chances, and it was a brave rearguard effort from the England side today.
Darren Bent did very well to get his header in that led to Frank Lampard’s goal
And they looked almost as good as the Newcastle defense today, and that’s a huge compliment of course. 😀
And in truth England in this game were not unlike the way Newcastle have played in many of their games this season, as the win was based on a brave and solid performance from the the defense.
A very good display and even better result for England, and it was Spain’s only second loss in their last 46 games, the other being to the USA.
And of those 46 games they have won 42, so a really good result by England this afternoon.
Maybe we do have a chance in the European Championships next summer?
Nah, I’m getting carried away again.
Here’s some video of the game including the goal.

Comment #6England are an embaressment. They are a bunch of idiots on the FA and couldn’t organise a p–s up in a brewery.
They don’t have a player who is comfortable on the ball and the way they play is probably 20 years behind current international methods.
Watch Barcelona and learn how the game should be played but of course you need players who are not frightened of the ball and are prepared to play as a team.
Do you think Brian Clough would be offered the job if he was still around, NO, because he was not a yes man and would have demanded full control and the power to really influence developement at youth level and beyond.
Would he tolerate Lampard and Gerrards juvenile behaviour or John Terry’s destructive behaviour to a fellow team mate, or Shriek’s ( l can’t explain why l did it) double foul and sending off recently.
Clough would have cleared the lot our and laid the law down with a team of young players and put the fear of god up them to perform with pride for the nation.

Comment #9The England team is a joke and bar a few key players (Rooney, Bent, Hart, Ashley Young) really needs to be stripped and rebuilt.
We won today on a sloppy uninspiring performance.
My starting XI for Man City
Krul
Simmo Saylor Colo Santon
Raylor Tiote Cabaye Jonas
Benny
Ba
We are clearly going to lack the wingers we need and i wouldnt play Guthrie on the wing. Even though he has looked good this season. I want to see Benny given a proper game with enough time to settle in. If he’s not working we can always switch for Best. I think the best option would be to play Raylor on the wing. He has in the past. He may lack some pace compared to Marv and Obertan but im sure his end product will be better.
And with Benny playing, he could always slot across to help when more speed is needed.

Read the above two articles and tell me these two arent a pair of cretins, whilst I agree good things have been done at the club, it’s all motivated for the good of MA not the good of nufc. These two respect nobody and that includes, fans , history, or legends.
Great start to the season and long may it continue but this is in spite of not because of the management!

Comment #17I watched the first half of the England match (well 35 mins actually) and all I can say is, we were PI$$ poor. It was like watching Stoke without the long throws, utter rubbish.
Anyway, I couldn’t give a stuff about Internationals, as they are a waste of time (why wait 3 months for the Premier League to start back up if we are going to be interrupted like this for meaningless friendlies?) Only good thing I can say about them is, they are giving our players a well deserved rest after all the hard work they have done so far.
Cannot wait for the City game, I am not expecting much, but those are the games you often get surprise performances. Really looking forward to it! HWTL!

Comment #18Haha sum people are too negative… And people who say england is a boring too watch cause they play to slow arent very smart cause they played exactly how we play, resting on the defence and then slowly going forward… Only drifference was we have jonas on the wing. England might not be a good as they used to be but u shud still support them. BIG driffrence between england and spain isnt the squad BUT the fans/journalists… In spain they will never place massive preasurre on spain if they lose weather englands newspapers were talking about a slaughtering tonight and we will never win anything…

Comment #21http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Newcastle-chief-Derek-Llambias-slams-Kevin-Keegan-and-Alan-Shearer-in-foul-rant-article829807.html this is DL speach
I cant believe fans are agreeing with him… Shearer has arrogance because he is the best striker in EPL history, he deserves us to applaud him he is one of the only loyal footballers in recent years… He choose us over man utd and lots of players wud never do that
Keegen made us the team we are today, withoit his managerial period in the 90’s we wudnt of been famous and sbr wudnt of got the players he did, which means we wudnt of been in europe which means half our team now wud never of played for us…
If this is true and he did say this stuff, he deserves to fired and maybe killed… (maybe thats going to far xD)
What happend to the famous geordie publoc who wud never let anything happen to nufc?? MA and DL ruined it
Our legends are being ripped apart by those 2 and its awful to see nufc fans say: “he tells the truth our legends are rubbish”
What happend to the famous geordie fans? (getting less and less)
What happend to the famous stadium? (name changed and singing section GONE) what happend to the best english striker who has graced the earth and choose newcastle over the worlds best(aw well he is just arrogant) what happend to one of the best tactical managers newcastle had who saved us from relegation and then almost wpn the title? (well his head is all over the place)
What happend to CH? (apparntley he was a puppet-_-)
Whats next? He will wipe his arse with our number9 shirt??
And the fans will say”well it hasnt being filled yet atleast it has a use…”
If lambias isnt fired for this then joey barton shud of being…

Comment #35FREE ENTRY TO ST JAMES PARK !!! READ ON FOR DETAILS !
You can slag this off or understand that I for one think Ashley is a Bas**rd and changing the name of our Historical Football Cathedral Is an absolute F***ng disgrace.
Here’s a story ..I spoke to Newcastle City council ..spoke to the legal team..I put it to them that as St.James Park is on the town moor it is both historical as a name and part of the Town Moor, both historically and geographically..
And you cant change the name of a place name without total permission from the powers that be ..
I also told them that the pitch is part of the moorland that is the Town Moor and same as Leazes park is also part of the herbage and the town moor you cant change the name of St.James Park just as you cant change the name of Leazes park
Historically and Geographically you cannot change the name of a place name without the intervention and agreement by government and people .
I also got in touch with the freemen of Newcastle ..
I wonder of Alan Shearer is Happy ? why ?
Well as a freeman of Newcastle he is allowed to graze his cattle on the St. James park pitch ..
Also I wonder if Mike Ashley Knows that on a Sunday he has to keep a gate open at the Gallowgate end and let people walk in totally free, no charge !
If anyone out there wants to… and your not happy with the name change ..why not gather at the Gallowgate next home game on a Sunday and ask where the free gate is ..they have to let you in as they will be breaking the law if they don’t ..So Suck that one Ashley !
Iv Studied the Town Moor act 1988 ..look it up, its a good read .
Also if anyone can find the Royal Charter and bylaws as regards the Town Moor, a document set out by
King John in 1735 when he gave the Town Moor to Newcastle and its Freemen ..it may well reveal why Mike Ashley cannot change the name of an Historic place name on the Town Moor
I know that 36% of people on here cant think for themselves ..and if you don’t like the above I don’t give a damn.
Also I detest Mike Ashley so so much
I would rather we were skint and in the 2nd division of the Northern league than have this Ba**rd owning our club one day more.
Ashley hates us ..I have said this many times in the past ..we are just a vehicle to drive Sports Direct ..Sports direct comes first.
Ashley and Llambias were on holiday in Barbados together last week and timed this announcement during an international break and a period when we dont have a home game for a few weeks ..the man is a Bas**rd
Also Did you know that stewards are throwing people out ..looking for Individuals in the crowd singing out against Ashley ? He moved the singing section now he is singling out individuals
This is a dictatorship ,,Gaddafi springs to mind ..and we know what happened to him .!

Comment #38You’ve either proved my point, or outer yourself as a dedicated WUM. Perhaps both.
If you think ANYBODY renaming the stadium would be met with happiness, and as you say “fans loving it”, I have to seriously wonder if you’re even a fan. If you believe that it’s acceptable for Llambias to go around saying stuff that has been quoted in the Mirror insulting managers – two of which being bonafide legends in recent years – and players, then you are an absolute fool.
Llambias is showing us precisely what we’ve all been saying about him, a horrible, slimy little shit who cares about nothing more than his bank account. He has no respect for those employed by the club, has no respect for the fans and most importantly has no respect for the club itself.
As he said: they can be horrible bast*rds. They’ve proved that time and time again.
People like you will blindly support him and conveniently ignore all the negatives. Open your eyes and join us in the real world.
