We have said a few times that we wouldn’t be surprised if Erik Pieters arrives at Newcastle in January.
Erik Pieters – Newcastle target in January
Newcastle were apparently very close to getting the PSV Dutch International left-back in the summer, and it’s now clear that Newcastle will further strengthen their squad in January, with the defense being one one area we expect them to concentrate on.
It’s not that the defense isn’t playing very well, but we just don’t have enough cover, especially at center-back. Just think the mess we’d be in right now if Steven Taylor or Fabricio Coloccini are injured, before Mike Williamson is fully fit again.
And there’s news in the Sunday Sun today that the deal Newcastle are trying to strike for the Dutch left-back may again be in trouble because of agent troubles.
Those are the people who try to make big money on the transfers of their players, and sometimes ask for ridiculous amounts, and some clubs must even pay them their asking price.
Erik could be particularly useful to Newcastle, because he can also play at center-back as well as at left back, so he could be a top class utility player in defense for the Tyneside club.
It seems the deal in the summer broke down becasue of excessive demands from his agent.
The fee for the Eredivisie star, who is said to be extremely anxious to join Newcastle, is said to be around £7M, and the news in the local paper today is that Newcastle have some other Dutch targets lined up for the next two transfer windows.
The news today on Erik Pieters is that his agent demands may again scupper the deal in January, although the good news is that it does seem that Newcastle will bring in several players in a couple of months, to further strengthen the Newcastle squad.
The Sunday Sun is again reporting that 24 year-old striker Mobido Maiga will join in January from Sochaux, but they are saying that Birmingham’s center-back Liam Ridgewell is no longer a Newcastle target.
Other center-half targets are said to have moved ahead of him in the pecking order, so we wonder which center-half is now Newcastle’s top target for January?
