After Ireland’s terrific 4-0 win at Estonia in the first leg of the Euro 2012 playoffs, Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has decided he does need Newcastle striker Leon Best for the second leg tomorrow night in Dublin’s fair city.
Leon Best – in Ireland colors
It seems almost certain that Ireland will now qualify, but they will still go out and try to win the second leg in what should be a fantastic night for Ireland’s fans on Tuesday night, as they will be at the Euro 2012 Championships next summer in Poland and the Ukraine.
Leon Best was called up to Giovanni Trapattoni’s squad for the two-leg Euro 2012 play-off with Estonia when it was realized that WBA’s Shane Long was injured and couldn’t participate.
But the Italian has also been critical of Best’s work rate when he has played for Ireland in the past.
Best missed the first leg in Estonia because his wife was giving birth to their first child, and it’s almost a compassionate gesture by Trapattoni not to risk the player, and allow him to return home to Newcastle.
Best can be with his wife and first born, and also get fit for the game this coming Saturday at Manchester City.
This is what Trapattoni said:
“We said thanks because we wished he had come with us,” “I said to him now you are injured and I don’t need you in this game.”
“It is better you go back to your team to finish your therapy.”
Leon now has an opportunity to be in the Ireland squad for the Championships next summer, but he is currently out of favor with Trapattoni, but that’s nothing that some Premier goals for Newcastle through the end of the season couldn’t rectify.
Leon has so far scored 3 goals for Newcastle in his 11 league games this season, and is due some goals.
Anybody know if Leon’s wife has actually given birth and whether it’s a boy or a girl?
