The web-site CaughtOffside is reporting that Newcastle are interested in in Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud.
Oliver Giroud – while at Tours
The news is that Newcastle are looking at funding a £6M move for the player who turned 25 in late September, and is therefore at least the right age and he stands 6’4″ tall.
Oliver started his career with Grenoble in 2005, and then moved to Istres in 2007 and Tours in 2008, before arriving at Montpelier in 2010.
He has played 48 times with 20 goals for Montpellier who currently stand second top of the French Ligue 1 Table and just 3 points behind money-bags PSG, after 13 games played.
While at Tours from 2008 through 2010, he appeared 69 times and scored a good 38 goals so he has a good goal scoring record at his last two French clubs.
His form was such that he was called up to the France national football team earlier this month, by manager Laurent Blanc, and Giroud came on for his debut as a substitute on last Friday in the 1-0 win over the United States in Paris, a game in which Yohan Cabaye was an unused sub.
We’re not sure if this story has any truth to it, and we haven’t watched the player enough to know just how good he is.
But he’s French and he’s a striker, so there’s a small possibility it could even be true. 😀
