Newcastle Reported After French International Striker In January

The web-site CaughtOffside is reporting that Newcastle are interested in in Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud.

Oliver Giroud – while at Tours

The news is that Newcastle are looking at funding a £6M move for the player who turned 25 in late September, and is therefore at least the right age and he stands 6’4″ tall.

Oliver started his career with Grenoble in 2005, and then moved to Istres in 2007 and Tours in 2008, before arriving at Montpelier in 2010.

He has played 48 times with 20 goals for Montpellier who currently stand second top of the French Ligue 1 Table and just 3 points behind money-bags PSG,  after 13 games played.

While at Tours from 2008 through 2010,  he appeared 69 times and scored a good 38 goals so he has a good goal scoring record at his last two French clubs.

His form was such that he was called up to the France national football team earlier this month, by manager Laurent Blanc, and Giroud came on for his debut as a substitute on last Friday in the 1-0 win over the United States in Paris, a game in which Yohan Cabaye was an unused sub.

We’re not sure if this story has any truth to it,  and we haven’t watched the player enough to know just how good he is.

But he’s French and he’s a striker, so there’s a small possibility it could even be true. 😀

What do you think?

He’s a canny player from what little I’ve seen of him. When he isn’t scoring, he’s setting them up and he’s decent in the air.

I remember the sunday sun saying that after raiding france for players the club were looking to dip into the holland market for there new recruits. which to my hoping would be to sign pieters and luuk de jong.

I know we are getting maiga, but it wud be ideal to bring in de jong in as well with lovenkrands looking to leave and with ranger to be moved on.

regards to giroud he does sound like a player who fits in with the transfer policy we have, just dont know a great deal about him.

Lads this guy is the real deal, I’ve watched him a bit and hes on fire at the moment. Hes tall but has 2 great feet (and an exceptional left foot). Reminds a lot of Van Persie (I know I know). It would be fantastic if this was true, maybe theres some loophole in his contract as Montpellier wont let him go on the cheap –
    also @Cheik Mate QUALITY!!!

Well! If this was one of Graham Carr,s secret targets then it aint secret anymore!

Maybe this lad would be a good signing, but i really think that names of players are just being pulled out of hats at the moment! Never heard of this guy at all!

Any truth in this?, and are there any clips op youtube of him?

I hope Maiga is just for cover up so we can steal this guy.

Prefer him compared to Maiga. Don’t think we need more African players, because they will be off to ACON.

Better than Maiga, great aerial ability, socre many goals for a reasonable team.

    Great player.

Great article here guys on French Football Ligue 1 and the current stars in French football.

It mentions Newcastle quite a few times too and that has to be a good thing as we have now over taken Arsenal it seems as the main link between Ligue 1 and the Premier League.

As Much as its unlikely that we could afford to buy this guy its not inconceivable that we could be looking to bring in 2 strikers in January with Ranger almost certainly gone and Lovenkrands now after a move for first team football.

he’s got a release clause in his contract, so he may not cost so much.
decent player, tall, scores goals and creates too would be a good addition
