There is more news today that Newcastle could be after Celtic captain Scott Brown, once the January transfer window opens.
Scott Brown – Newcastle linked again with this player
There was news of this in the summer, but it came to nothing, although as long as Scott Brown doesn’t sign a new deal at Celtic the more he will be linked away with a move from the Glasgow giants.
The Daily Record in Scotland is reporting that Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is preparing a move for Brown in January, and his contract runs out next June, when he could become a free agent.
There is a concern that midfielder Cheick Tiote will move to Chelsea in January, and if the offer from the London club is big enough and daft enough, then Mike Ashley will accept it, and you have to believe Newcastle will already have a player lined up to replace Cheick.
You would expect that, but that didn’t happen when Newcastle sold Andy Carroll to Liverpool last January, and the team were short of a striker for the rest of the season.
But with Newcastle doing so well in the Premier League, it would be foolish to jeopardize Newcastle’s excellent chance of finishing in the top seven this season.
Newcastle are currently in 4th place and a full 7 points about 8th placed Aston Villa, with a much better goal difference too.
We don’t know if this story is true, but we have to believe the club are looking for a potential replacement for Tiote in January, should Chelsea come in with a ridiculousness high offer for Cheick, and we wouldn’t put that past the London club.
Scott Brown is 26 and moved from Hibs to Celtic in the summer of 2007 for £4.4M on a five year deal, and he has played 169 times for Celtic with 15 goals and 27 times for Scotland with two goals.
