Bad News – Tiote Ruled Out For Tomorrow – Guthrie Doubtful

There’s some  surprising news today and it’s not good for our chances of getting a result at Old Trafford tomorrow.

Cheick Tiote – will not play tomorrow

Cheick Tiote has been ruled out of the game, and news today that he has not trained  this week, and he seems to be finding it difficult to recover from that knee injury.

We thought the Ivorian would be fit because after the Manchester City game we were told that Cheick had trained well on that Saturday back at the  Newcastle training grounds in Benton.

And we thought if Tiote couldn’t make it, then Danny Guthrie would again deputize for Tiote, as he’s done in the last four games, but news today that Danny is not 100% fit either.

Alan Pardew had this to day to say today:

“I think it’s been the toughest selections I’ve had to make,” “There’ll be no Cheick, and that gives us a problem.”

“As good as Danny Guthrie’s been, he’s a different type of player. I have to make sure we have a fighting chance of winning this game.”

“Danny has not been 100 per cent.”  “He went into the Man City game with a slight injury, and he’ll have to take that into the Man United game.”

“Whether he can last the game or not, we’ll have to wait and see.”

This is surprising news and not particularly good news either,  so who will come into the middle of the field if both Tiote and Guthrie don’t make it?

Mehdi Abeid and Haris Vuckic are two promising 19 year-old central midfielders, but Mehdi is off playing for Algeria in the Olympic qualifying games,  and it could be that Dan Gosling gets a start – but it will be very tough for the former Everton midfielder.

But nevertheless,  it will also be  a big chance if  the 21 year-old England U21 International does get a start tomorrow afternoon.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Dan gosling is a good player to “have” to resort to. So either way, step up Gosling 🙂

From previous thread…So it sounds like Tiote is out and Guthrie isn’t fully fit.

For this reason I’d go for:

    ————–Krul—————
    Simpson–Collo–S.Taylor–Santon
    Obertan–Gosling–Cabaye–Jonas
    ————-HBA—————
    ————–Ba—————-

I can’t decide between R.Taylor and Santon at LB, but I don’t think Simpson has done anything wrong at RB and he therefore deserves to start.

This formation would provide solidity at the back but also speed on the counter-attack.

As for Gosling starting, he and Guthrie are similar in that CM position and either can do a job for us. So I’ve put Gosling in there because Guthrie’s not fully fit, but I’d still be happy if Guthrie got a solid hour in and then gets replaced by Gosling.

Ideally, I’d like that formation with Sammy and Best coming on later in the game.

Got faith in Gosling if he has to come in! He works hard, looked a player in preseason and always rated him for Everton! A fit Cabaye will be the best central midfielder on the pitch! Wonder if Pards will consider playing Benny in central midfield…hes played their for france and for Marseille! Hes work rate is vastly underrated too!

Man Utd have been watching Tiote for quite some time, so keeping him away from them could be wise thining as if he perform well they may be more inclined to put in a bid that MA can not refuse in January.

Unless Tiote is fully fit I wouldnt want him to start. He is very slow (mobility & thinking) when not fully fit and could prove a liability IMO.

If Guthrie is also out, then either start Gosling with Cabaye, or drop HBA in there and start with Best and Ba upfront!

Ok don’t panic Guthrie may still play he hasn’t been 100% ruled out either(mind games maybe)! If he doesn’t play we can put Gosling in there! Both Goz & Cab can play as attacking or defencive centre mids, if one aint working well enough at playing defencive they could switch to attacking and the other could switch to defencive or vice versa! Each one’s attacking skills are different, Gosling’s is more like a Nolan style arrive late in the box or make that speculative run through on goal. Cabaye’s style is a play the killer ball through or hang around the edge of there box and strike a 20-25yard lightning bolt! You never know this may pay dividends. You never ever know. I fricken hope so anyway ha ha ha!

I would put Santon in for Ryan Taylor – even tho he has had a great season, Santon was brought in as the replacement for Jose, so putting him in this game, against one of the best teams in the world, at Old Trafford could do wonders for Santon’s confidence. If he starts off the pace, Raylor can always come in at half time!!!

    ————————–KRUL——————–

    SANTON—–SAYLOR—-COLO—RAYLOR

    OBERTAN—GOSLING—CABAYE—JONAS

    ———————-BEN ARFA——————-

    ————————DEMBA——————–

RAYLOR AND JONAS FEEL EACH OTHER ON LEFT SIDE OF THE FIELD PERFECTLY, SO NO CHANGE THERE. SIMMO PLAYED WELL BUT SANTON LOOKS GOOD IN RESERVES AND IN TRAINING, MOREOVER SIMMO NEEDS MORE PRESSURE TO SING A NEW CONTRACT SO.. OBERTAN IN BECAUSE IT’S AGAINST MU, CHANGE HIM WITH AMEOBI AFTER AN HOUR.

OR WE COULD ALSO TRY THIS, BUT IT’S RISKY…:

    ———————–KRUL———————

    SANTON—-SAYLOR—COLO–RAYLOR

    OBERTAN–BEN ARFA–CABAYE–JONAS

    ——————-BEST——DEMBA————-

OR EVEN START BENNY (OR GOSLING, ) ON THE WING INSTEAD OF OBER.IF BENNY, THAN DAN ALONGSIDE CABAYEIN THE CENTRE.GOSLING GIVES US OPTIONS. HE COULD REALLY GET THE JOB DONE DEFENSIVELY ON THE WING, HELPING OUR RB TO KEEP A CLEAN SHEET. ALSO SAMMY AS SUPER SUB AND VUKCIC IN FOR BENNY AFTER 70-75 MIN. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

I was gonna propose the option of playing HBA there instead but i was beaten to it never mind here’s another 1 if guthrie’s out why not play with Goz & Cab as Defencive central midfielder’s they can both break up man u’s play in the middle and double up with the LB or RB if man u attack’s down the wings Leaving Sammy/Ober, Gutti, Hba and Ba to batter away at their currently fragile back line.

4231, means we’re both strong in defense, but with the full backs and wingers getting forward, our attack will be dangerous too.

Could always play a 41212, which is solid in all areas, Cabaye defensive mid, and Benny attacking. That way Ba wouldnt be without his favourite strike patner Best.

By the sounds of AP looks like he’ll start Guthrie and then replace him when he thinks he is running out of steam, expect him to be subbed for Gosling after about 60mins or even half time just like Gosling came on for Guthrie last week. Playing a diamond with HBA behind the strikers and cabaye in holdin mid is simply not going to happen, united are vulnerable in the centre with anderson and cleverly out injured that is where we need to hurt them, it’s a shame that tiote is injured because with him and cabaye up against united’s second string midfield they would have steamrolled them

Hatem what you are suggesting means dropping perhaps our best defensive attribute and ball carrier….Guti, he relieves so much pressure by the way he carries the ball out of defense not to mention the way he helps his full back through tracking back, if we are to get any sort of result from old trafford we need wingers on the pitch so a 41212 will never be used, why have two up front when u can play one up front to prevent a defensive collapse which is what would happen if we took our wingers off

In fairness, that sounds like Guthrie is going to at least start. If not, we do have Shola back who is decent at holding up the ball against the big teams.. that would allow Arfa to drop back into midfield with Cabaye… just a thought.

Munster Mag his style of play will vary depending on who is playing alongside him, he isn’t your typical grab the game by the scruff of the neck centre mid like tiote is, and when tiote is playing with him he can roam forward, pick passes and unlock defenses, if he is playing with guthrie who is himself more attack minded he is having to play a much deeper role which means he loses his effect I feel, when he physically gets stronger and more suited to the pace and physicality of the premier league I feel we will see a more solid physical game from him akin to tiote’s but with attacking flair

Hatem if you re read my comment again I am referencing the 4-1-2-1-2 formation which is a formation without wingers…if you need someone to explain to you how that formation requires dropping guti then I am afraid you don’t really know your football

Boater wouldn’t dream of dropping Benny as deep as centre mid, he doesn’t have the physical presence, he is a flair player, who takes the ball to feet not a ball winner

Sorry, I didnt clarify, the diamond I was suggesting was to look like this

    —————-Arfa——————–
    Therefore containing wingers.

    Has to be Vuckic then.

He was ahead of Guthrie and Gosling anyway, until he picked up that wrist injury. He’s so impressive on the ball and a greater physical presence than Guthrie, would slot straight in, in my opinion.

I were surprised by his workrate when he came on in the cup, too – he was everywhere.

Hatem > I think what Mr Ruddy is getting at; is with your proposed 4 1 2 1 2 formation, this is forcing everyone into the middle channel, and you wouldnt stick Jonas in the midle of the park would you? Especialy against a team like Man U, who have Nani, A Young who will happily stay out of the game until the ball is played to them out wide, and then without even thinking will tear down the wing, cut inside / shoot etc ……… If we were to change from our generic 4 4 2 formation, then we will definitely not move our wide men further into the middle!

What has happened to Haris has he slipped behind in the pecking order because I thought I read that he was recovered from that wrist injury but there has been no mention of him from AP recently has he been playing reserve football because I can’t recall seeing him on the first team bench and if he was surely AP would have been bringing him on instead of “Perchinho”

Ruddy > you are usually grumpy on a Friday?????? You mad dog, Fridays are the start of the weekend, the end of the working week, where boys can stand up to be counted for and grace the pubs and bars with their presence, the day that you can leave the office / factory / farm / power plant (wherever yo work) with 2 fingers lifted high above your head.

To the Gods of Friday – we salute you!!!!

Now smile > 3points tomorrow, courtesy of Mr Ba 😀
