A simply magnificent rearguard action by Newcastle this afternoon and they came away with an unlikely point from Old Trafford, after they had gone behind after 43 minutes to the luckiest of Manchester United goalsw.
And Gutierrez was sent off after 80 minutes for a second yellow card, so Newcastle saw out for the last 15 minutes or so, including injury time to get a valuable point.
Newcastle started this game well and were trying to be a lot tighter than last week, but in the first 10 minutes the Red Devils were all over Newcastle and the lads were a little lucky not to concede in those early minutes.
Manchester United got a really lucky goal early into the second half, as a Rooney free kick was blocked and a second shot by Rooney was kicked into Henrendez by Steven Taylor, and the ball was in the net – you talk about a lucky goal.
But perhaps Steven Taylor should have done better, but it was a terribly unlucky goal to give away so early in the second half.
Then Ben Arfa was brought down in the box and the lineman was signalling for a penalty, and after consulting with the lineman the referee gave the penalty – and it really wasn’t one.
It looked like Rio Ferdinand didn’t even touch Ben Arfa – to be truthful.
Bur Demba Ba coolly took then penalty amid huge boos from the Manchester crowd, as he sent De Gea the wrong way, and Newcastle were amazingly level – a great penalty and Demba Ba’s 9th goal of the season.
Then it was simply all Manchester United and Tim Krul was just magnificent in the Newcastle goal, as they just couldn’t get the ball this lad, and when they did Danny Simpson on 87 minutes stopped the ball before it went over the line – fantastic play by the former Red Devil.
And then in injury time Hernandez got the ball into the net but it was clearly offside.
The news about his game will be all about how lucky the Magpies were and how unlucky the Red Devils were, but this is not the first time our lads have put up a fantastic rearguard performance this season.
And this was only the second time in their last 22 league games that Manchester United did not win at Old Trafford – the other one being the 6-1 hammering by Manchester City earlier this season.
It was a great performance form our lads and a magnificent point.
We’ll get a full report of the game as it happened as soon as we can.
