The Sunday Sun is reporting today that Newcastle have been offered 25 year-old Montpellier 6’4″ striker Olivier Giroud.
Olivier Giroud – Newcastle turn down offer
But the news is that Newcastle have turned down the offer, and the deal to sign 24 year-old Sochaux striker Mobido Maiga is almost concluded.
The Sunday Sun is again reporting that while the Maiga deal is not fully completed yet, Newcastle have agreed a fee with Sochaux, and personal terms with Maiga and his representatives, and there is every likelihood the deal will be finalized on January 1st, the first day of the upcoming transfer window.
In mid-January Maiga has to go off for up to four weeks to the African Cup of Nations, where he will be representing Mali, and Newcastle will also lose Cheick Tiote (Ivory Coast) and Demba Ba (Senegal) at that time.
But as we had suspected, Maiga will not get the number 9 shirt, as he will first have to prove that he is a Premier League class player – once he arrives on Tyneside to bolster the striker ranks.
Newcastle are in top gear now for the transfer window upcoming in January, and are also preparing for the summer transfer window, when Newcastle are expected to let around four players go and bring in suitable replacements.
The club is looking at players who have 18 months or less to run on their current contracts, because they can get decent bargains on these players.
The news is also that Newcastle will be in much better financial position next year, once Alan Smith’s £60K/week wages, as one example, are off the books.
And with the news that Newcastle have just negotiated a much improved deal with Puma for the strips, are close to agreeing a deal with Nike for the renaming of St. James’ Park, and Virgin Money seemingly are very willing to take over from Northern Rock as the shirt sponsors, financially things will be much improved at Newcastle next year.
We now expect Maiga to arrive early in January but any ideas who the new defender may be, if it’s not Erik Pieters?
