Newcastle Turn Down Giroud – Maiga Deal Almost Complete

The Sunday Sun is reporting today that Newcastle have been offered 25 year-old Montpellier 6’4″ striker Olivier Giroud.

Olivier Giroud – Newcastle turn down offer

But the news is that Newcastle have turned down the offer, and the deal to sign 24 year-old Sochaux striker Mobido Maiga is almost concluded.

The Sunday Sun is again reporting that while the Maiga deal is not fully completed yet, Newcastle have agreed a fee with Sochaux, and personal terms with Maiga and his representatives, and there is every likelihood the deal will be finalized on January 1st, the first day of the upcoming transfer window.

In mid-January Maiga has to go off for up to four weeks to the African Cup of Nations, where he will be representing Mali, and Newcastle will also lose Cheick Tiote (Ivory Coast) and Demba Ba (Senegal) at that time.

But as we had suspected,  Maiga will not get the number 9 shirt, as he will first have to prove that he is a Premier League class player – once he arrives on Tyneside to bolster the striker ranks.

Newcastle are in top gear now for the transfer window upcoming in January,  and are also preparing for the summer transfer window,  when Newcastle are expected to let around four players go and bring in suitable replacements.

The club is looking at players who have 18 months or less to run on their current contracts, because they can get decent bargains on these players.

The news is also that Newcastle will be in  much better financial position next year, once Alan Smith’s £60K/week wages, as one example,  are off the books.

And with the news that Newcastle have just negotiated a much improved deal with Puma for the strips, are close to agreeing a deal with Nike for the renaming of St. James’ Park, and Virgin Money seemingly are very willing to take over from Northern Rock as the shirt sponsors, financially things will be much improved at Newcastle next year.

We now expect Maiga to arrive early in January but any ideas who the new defender may be, if it’s not Erik Pieters?

Comments welcome.

i highly doubt that newcastle would do a shirt deal with puma and a stadium deal with nike, that would be a huge conflict of interest for both brands ..

The lad Giroud bagged a hattrick last night; sounds like a player in form (or is he a player, playing slightly above his himself and will come back down soon?)

Pardew saying players may go in january?? I think that is a direct warning to simpson, sign the contract or your out…

Cant say im too bothered if we can get in at least 2 defenders in, in the same period. CB cover and a RB if simmo goes – other than that I think a striker in and possibly lovenkrands out??

To me Maiga seems like a number 10 striker? We have Ben Arfa and Pardew himself said that Ba is a number 10 striker, so why would we want another one? Unless Maiga can play on the wings? :S

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more committed defensive unit.

Match after match for 90 mins+ they concentrate and throw themselves into blocks and tackles for the team.

I don’t want to see Simmo go, or Raylor dropped.

If the scouts think Maiga is a striker that will improve the squad, then that’s good enough for me. Looks like Lovenkrands is on his way out.

I’m hoping Maiga is the technical striker we need, however, i don’t quite get the reasoning for signing Maiga if he’s out for the ANCs. (African Nations Cup?)
That means we’ll have Loven, Shola and Best.
Nothing to brag about there imo, except Best. There’s also HBA and Vuckic tho, but cmon, they are not strikers.

Not a single person has said a bad word about any player on this thread =/

People have mentioned the style of player and their stats, two things you’d expect to be discussed on a football blog on a thread regarding transfer dealings haha!

@Dannyo – Because the ACN is only once every two years. Is a player really not worth signing if you miss him for 1 and a half months every two years?

Not when that stirker is crucially needed mate. Ba is the only one scoring goals atm and he’s gone for a month, then we get another striker who’ll barely step through the doors only to be gone again.
I thought we were getting a striker who’d come in and add to our goal tally in January, not perhaps wait a month (if all goes well for him) and then start.
U really see us firing in goals with Loven Shola and Best?
    I don’t.

That was the worry before the season started Dannyo, where would the goals come from all season, but everyone has been chipping in.

I know Ba is our top scorer but Im sure the other strikers and HBA, Cabaye and maybe even Jonas and Obertan can make up the difference.

Plus its only 4 games they’ll be missing, and I think only one of them is against a difficult team, spurs.

Ed where you getting this Nike stadium thing from.

There is no way in the world that Nike would buy the naming rights for the stadium with Puma manufacturing the shirts for the next 3 years.

Forget about Nike thats not going to happen, the Puma deal is done.

Any bets the naming rights go to Virgin.

if tiote leaves i want that everton kid jack rodwell ,25 million tiote ,replaced by jack rodwell say 15 million
easy peasy bit a business coz everton are desprate for cash, say collo leaves 20 million bring in cahill 10 million and seba bassong 5 million eric pieters 5 million, say tim krul leaves 20 million re instore harps say cabaye leaves to a top club like manchester utd demand carrick and mechada ,the board said it would take stupid offers well if we can we should be asking for 1 or 2 of there players as part of any deals for our top players, the reason we are fourth is because of these players and thats why the big clubs want these players i wouldnt t let a single 1 leave unless another top player is comin the other way if there so desprate for our players then the balls in our park we should be asking for players plus cash ,by doing this mike ashley wouldnt have to put his hand in his pocket and we would be pretty happy, for example chelsea bid 30 million tiote,i would be saying daniel sturridge and 10 million ,why not we ve got all the aces

Even if we got stupid money for players, we still wouldnt be dropping £10m-£15m to sign players ourselves.

Carr has said so, so has Pardew, and Llambias. The most I can see us spending on a player is £7m.

When the ACN commences this is the team we should play:
    Simpson Taylor Colocini Taylor
    Obertan Guthrie Gosling Jonas
I would enjoy seeing how cabaye does in an attacking mid position and I would see Benny scoring before shola!!

The FA Cup obviously isn’t important this year, as we’ll have fewer strikers than now for the first two rounds. What if Best and Shola are injured as usual – Lovenkrands and Ranger up front? As usual the only forward planning is in terms of finance. Pardew is already bracng us for the sale of Tiote in January to next week’s opponents. Have you noticed that only foreign clubs are interested in Colo, whereas a host of English clubs would be in for Tayls if given encouragement. . Wonder if that’s because he’s braver, and doesn’t turn his back on opponents about to shoot, amongst other things.

How is the FA cup not important this year?

Its the first two rounds, unless we’re very unlucky we arent going to be playing anyone too challenging. Do you honestly think our entire team would fall apart without Ba and Tiote for a month and a half?

Stuart – please read what I said carefully. I was at the last two games, were you? It was the overwhelming opinion amongst those present that Ba did much better at holding the ball up than either Shola or Best normally do therefore giving the defence time to reorganise. I was also pointing out the unreliabiliy of the other 2 actually making it on to the pitch.

Maiga & Pieters to Sign Jan 1st !!!!! All this about New Players…… We hooted on about we need a left back when you know who left join Judas… we spent £5 million on Davide Santon and has he had a game yet ???? Yes we need players as back up but the way things are going if we just got a striker on loan as back up and a centre half we would be ok then get better players for Europe next season as we would be a better attraction . Can we afford to Get into an Asprillia Trap this season ???

Giroud is a damn sight better than Maiga. Giroud is like Cheatarito without the diving or offsides. He has the predatory instinct, Magia? Bad attitude, currently has a knee injury and doesn’t score as many. Maiga isn’t a poor player though. Giroud is a number 9. Maiga isn’t.

Whoever comes through the door will get my support.
If they want to come, can do a job and are willing to put their body on the line like the players we have now they will get the support they deserve.
We are one of the hardest premier league teams to break down because everyone works for everyone else, if someone doubles up on an opposing player someone else drops in to cover them. I have to take my hat off to Pardew and Carver et al, it is working and it seems that even when we have injuries to key players, whoever comes in will do everything they can to get a result.
Even the pundits are lauding us instead of laughing at us (not that im bothered about them) The scouting system is working up till now and I trust the management, even the owner seems to be learning (the renaming aside) HWTL

are you talking about just those games because Best is far better at holding up the ball than Ba? Aside from his goal record, which is great and deserved respect, his overall game has been lethargic and average. Dont forget Best was on a scoring run like that not so long a go. We have missed him massivley and would bring him bak in asap over any other striker we have

Ba & Best work very well together as a striking unit, Ba is better when just behind the striker, a very similar role to HBA & Bestie is very good at holding up the ball until other players get forward!!

Maiga is very similar to Ba so I dont understand why we’re looking at him tbh, I would prefer someone like Nolan Roux or this Giroud gadgie, as a) he’ll come stright into the squad & not go off to the ACoN, he’s a strong striker & can score loads of goals, is he playing above his station, maybe in his current league yeah but I can see him fitting in quite nicely with the current French players we have & becoming a natural No9 for us.. 🙂

On the stdium renaming story, I can’t see a conflict between Nike & Puma if thats what happens, neither will have any say over the other, both will pay good money & to add ‘Virgin Money’ into the mix will boost our sponsorship revenue up around the £22m a season mark imo… (Nike – £10m, Puma – £6m, Virgin Money – £6m). 🙂
