Newcastle Again Linked With Prolific French Striker

The Daily Mail has resurrected a story of a couple of weeks ago,  that Newcastle are interested in two Montpellier players.

Giroud –  Olivier wants more – more goals

They are striker 25 year-old Olivier Giroud and 22 year-old defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.

But since the initial story broke, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has said the club have no interest in Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, so unless Alan is playing mind-games we can probably rule the 22 year-old out.

We’re not sure what the real story is about Giroud, but since joining Montpellier from Tours in January of  2010, he has scored 26 goals in 52 appearances for the French club, after hitting 30 goals in 61 appearances while at Tours.

Olivier has scored 13 goals in just 16 appearances this year, so this lad has a good record of scoring goals in France.

Montpeillier are now top of the French league after 15 games, 3 points above money-bags PSG.

Montpellier beat Sochaux 3-1 on Saturday with a hat-trick from  Giroud, with his goals coming in the second half, and PSG were beaten 3-1 at Marseilles on Sunday.

The news in the Mail today is that Newcastle scouts were at that game and checking on the 6’4″ striker.

Only two days ago the local Sunday Sun reported that Newcastle had been offered Giroud but they were not interested, but we don’t know how accurate that story is.

Giroud has recently made his debut for the France national side, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens in January, and whether indeed the deal to bring Maiga to Newcastle is the one that gets completed.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Would make slightly more sense as he’s not goign to be away for the ACN which is half of the reason why we need a striker?

    Christ, his finishing is immense!

The movment etc shows how he will be in the right place at the right time so form/no form, he looks like he has goals in him.

As long as he’s ‘cheap’ I think he’ll be a possible option but that national cap means that he’ll more than likely be out of our price range.

I think Giroud would sadly be around 10m minimum and the defender 5m. Would love both of them, just have to keep fingers crossed !!

Just read that article and watched the video. This player looks immense. I really hope we get him. Newcastle do their transactions on the quiet so if we’re linked in a tabloid, then it’s probably not true. This player looks world class…there is Shearer’s long awaited replacement. This bloke is a true number 9.

I can’t see us paying 10million for a single player under Ashley. But this Giroud is taking the league by storm. He’s extremely strong in the air and has decent pace and brilliant finishing. A complete forward.

    Couple of question’s
    How do you pronounce Giroud?

Is he like usain bolt as in 6’4” but like shizzle of a shovel or is he more similar to Ba as in he’ll get on the end of owt,and can cover ground at decent pace but no 100m track champ?

@izzyb1991 – He looks a pretty complete player.

Right place right time, good in the air and can finish well, but it’s his movement most of all that I like. Can see him being fed by Ben Arfa with all sorts of chances to get a shot away.

Again, his price tag seems high but we’ll just have to sit tight until January.

I still don’t see why Maiga is going to be a good option now for c£7m when he won’t play for us for a month and may come to us injured?

id much rather this lad than maiga, he is currently in gr8 form too and isnt in the african nations cup, he could be thrown straight in the deepend no problem. price shouldnt be an issue, getting a top finisher is!

I suppose you can make anybody look good in a 3 minute video – but it has to be said he has scored some cracking goals. Seems to be good in the air, good shot and good goal poacher. Like most left footers the right leg just seems to be for standing on but that is being picky.

This guy looks really good, from the videos, reports and news articles he looks like a beast. He looks very good in the air, although some of the French defenders look poor in the air. Hes also agile, he attempts overhead kicks alot and is skillful with step overs. The best thing about him however is his awareness, many of his goals have come from the keeper spilling the balls, defenders making mistakes etc. He seems to know what is going to happen before it does, that is key. Obviously I’m only going on these videos and reports but people do seriously rate him, I would have him over Maiga anyday. He does however need support from playmakers and wingers, I still think our wingers are not good enough, their balls into the box are not good enough, we need to buy a consistant crosser of the ball. Feed the goat and he will score

I think this lad would be a great purchase. We need a top class striker NOT stolen from us in the African Cup. Was too bad we did not get Gameiro but this lad looks the business as well. I think Best would do a great job, not taking anything away from him, but we need options.

Never heard of him but with that amazing scoring ratio he’s on par with Shearer. I bet that he will have no trouble adapting to the english game and will become our number 9 in the future if we sign him. I prefer this guy to Maiga anyday.

He seems to be a big strong lad whos very athletic.

Lets just hope if we dont go for him its because Carr sees something he didnt like, not because he would cost that little bit more.
