The Daily Mail has resurrected a story of a couple of weeks ago, that Newcastle are interested in two Montpellier players.
Giroud – Olivier wants more – more goals
They are striker 25 year-old Olivier Giroud and 22 year-old defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.
But since the initial story broke, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has said the club have no interest in Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, so unless Alan is playing mind-games we can probably rule the 22 year-old out.
We’re not sure what the real story is about Giroud, but since joining Montpellier from Tours in January of 2010, he has scored 26 goals in 52 appearances for the French club, after hitting 30 goals in 61 appearances while at Tours.
Olivier has scored 13 goals in just 16 appearances this year, so this lad has a good record of scoring goals in France.
Montpeillier are now top of the French league after 15 games, 3 points above money-bags PSG.
Montpellier beat Sochaux 3-1 on Saturday with a hat-trick from Giroud, with his goals coming in the second half, and PSG were beaten 3-1 at Marseilles on Sunday.
The news in the Mail today is that Newcastle scouts were at that game and checking on the 6’4″ striker.
Only two days ago the local Sunday Sun reported that Newcastle had been offered Giroud but they were not interested, but we don’t know how accurate that story is.
Giroud has recently made his debut for the France national side, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens in January, and whether indeed the deal to bring Maiga to Newcastle is the one that gets completed.
