There was a report before the game last Saturday at Old Trafford, that Coloccini was a doubt because of a back spasm.
Fabricio Coloccini – in action on Saturday
The news came out just before the kick-off, and therefore the news wasn’t widely reported, but it turns out it was true.
And it turns out that Newcastle’s medical team worked non-stop to get the captain fit for the game after he had a back spasm last Friday during training, and Alan Pardew has today praised the courage of the Newcastle captain.
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has come out and sung the praises of Coloccini:
“It was Colo’s bravery that got him out there, and we wouldn’t have got the results without him – 100%.”
“How he played at Man United I just don’t know,” “He could hardly walk off the training field on Friday.”
“His back seized up and the medical team did a fabulous job on him.”
Ad of course Fabricio had another sterling game at the heart of the Newcastle defense in the 1-1 draw to keep Newcastle in 4th place in the league.
Coloccini (and Argentine team-mate Gutierrez) both made their Newcastle debuts at Old Trafford in August of 2008, when Kevin Keegan was the manager, and that also ended up in a 1-1 draw.
And Coloccini’s partner in defense last Saturday, Steven Taylor, who again put his body on the line for the Newcastle cause, had this to say about his captain:
“To work with Colo each day is great for me. You can only learn from him and get better. He’s a great leader for us and the partnership is going really well.”
Newcastle will need to be at their best for the game on Saturday against Chelsea, and they will honor Gary Speed with a fitting tribute to the Welshman before the game.
We’re sure our lads will go all out on Saturday to get the win, which will keep Newcastle in 4th position in the league table.

Comment #2I was at Old Trafford last Saturday. Collocini was superb. He is a great leader and organiser. The incident with Rooney could easily have got out of hand but Collocini diffused the situation in an exemplary manner. The most important aspect of leadership is to model the behaviour you expect from others and he does this to perfection for me. Retaining his talent and leadership is important for our club and I hope a quick resolution to his contract talks can be effected by the board and owner.

Comment #3If it were JB instead of colo. JB would of got himself sent off. Colo is a leader I’d of least expected if you asked me last season. This season he’s really showing his colours and how far he has come.

Comment #6I still don’t know how Rooney has got off with it. Sky Sports didn’t even show the incident on their 50 minute highlights which I think is on a par with the disgraceful behaviour they’re covering up.

Comment #7if we played like we did last game, I’m sure we’ll be OK. I just wish we had scored that lovely ball from Arfa to Ba. Arfa’s pass was so slick!!

It’s all coming down to what mentality the teams enter the pitch with mate.
On paper Chelsea should have the better team tbh, but like u say, with their current form, the 3 points is there for the taking.
Hoping our players has caught on to that.

Comment #9Rooney’s ‘attack’ on Coloccini was nothing of the sort. If you watch it again you can see he goes to kick the ball but collo kicks it away before Rooney can make contact. The momentum carries his leg into collo. Was it perhaps careless? Yes. But it was far from deliberate.

Comment #10Got the midweek blues, roll on Saturday. My team for the Chelsea game:
GK- Krul
RB- Simpson
CB- Colo
CB- Saylor
LB- Raylor
RW- Obertan
DM- Tiote/Guthrie
CM- Cabaye
LW- Santon
AM- Ben Arfa
CF- Ba
I think that putting Santon on the LW is a good idea due to his pace and his defensive ability. Not only can he beat Boswinga for pace he will be able to track back and help Raylor, something I doubt Benny, Lover or potentially Sameobi would do to great effect.
With Santon in the game we also have the ability to change formation wihtout the need of a substitue. If we are getting pummled in midfield and are lacking in attacking threat we can move Santon to LB, move Raylor into a midfield 3 with Cabaye and Tiote and push Benny and Obertan up front on either wing to form an 3 pronged attack.

Comment #14agreed beattie, that makes sound sense. pardew wont change the back 4, simple as so santon, who’s known for his attacking intent and qualities makes a good foil with raylor and they can both double up well in defence
and with the spirit of speedo running through their hearts, our players will battle hard to win this game.
i know its going to be tough, but our determination, confidence and spirit will carry us through

Comment #15I appreciate what you a saying niffnoff but the same could be said for Raylor in the first place.
I am sure we did’nt buy him as a left back but he has played there all season.
Santon has played LM/LW before at Inter and for the sake of 1 game I am sure it is the best option we have.
Who would you put there niffnoff?
Samobi- RW
Lover- CF
Benny- AM
Good players can play in other positions when called upon and this weekend I think Santon is our best bet.

Comment #17Just after the game on Saturday, I said Santon should replace Jonas and was knocked back. Being told Sammy would be a better replacement. Looks as if people have had a bit of time to think.

Comment #21I agree on the Rooney thing. I’m sure he didn’t intend to hurt Collo. However as I heard said the other day, if Rooney had been doing that in Europe it would have earned him at least a yellow card and possibly a red. Collo’s reaction was superb and that’s one reason I’m sorry that the incident failed to get more coverage. Collo deserves credit outside of Newcastle for the sterling job he is doing and with so much dignity and character. Now that the 2 self appointed leaders of the team, Barton and Nolan have gone, our new skipper has had the chance to show what leadership is really about.
Regarding Santon at LM, I had been thinking the same myself. He has played there in Italy and has the pace and skill as well as defensive nous to probably do a great job there. However Pardew is the one I trust to make the right choice. He has done a cracking job so far.

Comment #23Looking towards this weekend’s game, it is being suggested that we might finally get some credit if we beat Chelsea. I wouldn’t count on it. The City defeat prompted that air of inevitability from the media. Man Utd was all about the penalty that wasn’t. Chelsea, if we beat them as we should, will no doubt be all about the Blues dreadful run of form. We will only see a positive and still surprised reaction if we are still in a champions League spot in April. Long may it continue though as if we are not being taken seriously then we might just sneak under the radar of many a team psychologically. HWTL

I really rate the lad, good DM and can also play a Cabaye role, probably more the latter, cause i don’t see the warrior in him as i do in Tiote.
Tiote is a beast of his own entirely.
Abeid has an excellent shot on him tho, will have a great future at the club.
Btw lads, whats going on with Vuckic? Not been on the bench for a LONG time, despite being injury free now for a while and playing great as always for the reserves.
I rate him higher than that tbh, and i really think he could do a job at CM too if given a chance.
Great passer of the ball.

PL clubs spent £71m on agents’ fees Oct 1 2010 to Sep 30 2011. #mcfc £9.6m. #thfc £7.5m. #lfc £7m. #cfc £6.4m. #nufc £6.3m….
Quite a lot of money spent by us! Must’ve been those free transfers

Allot of agents ruining the game today, i understand the players want help in big money moves to others clubs, or moves at all ofc, but having clubs paying fees to these agents is all wrong.
Would rather FIFA went in and changed the ruling to the players being responsible for paying for an agents service.
Hoping for a change here in the future.
If i buy a house here in Norway, i don’t pay shit to the realestate agent, the sellers do, since they have provided the service for the seller.
It’s so wrong this agent business in football…

Comment #30Andy, now we know where the £35 million went. we’ve been paying the agents fees from other clubs.
mcfc £9.6m. thfc £7.5m. lfc £7m. cfc £6.4m. nufc £6.3m = £36.8m

Comment #31Have to agree Dannyo. Most agents (out of football) get a percentage of their clients earnings. Why should football agents be different?

Comment #32Hi!!! Chelsea fan here, but you are my favourite second club ever since I follow Premier League.
Right now I’m very pissed with board, just like you have been I suppose.
Anyway, I will support you on Saturday with all my heart.
I hope you will make it, I know you can.
You have everything it takes, go for it.
Not because you are better, just because you deserve it more. Because you are the team!

I understand what you are saying but I don’t think RVP is as strong as that in the air.
His heading reminds me of AC big strong and great timing with the head to ball.
Watching clips is never the best way to assess people but I would say he look like what AC could possibly become with a bit more work, the lad appears to have balance and poise and certainly knows where the goal is.
