Liam Ridgewell Could Become January Target For Newcastle

Both Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini were injured in yesterdays’ 3-0 home defeat against Chelsea.

Liam Ridgewell – experienced Premier League player

And with Steven’s Achilles injury likely to be serious,  Newcastle will definitely need to go into the market for a center-back in January.

Newcastle tried to sign Biormiongham’s Liam Ridgewell on the last day of the transfer window in August and were said to have bid around £2M, but  were unsuccessful.

And since then the local press in Newcastle have said Liam is no longer a Newcastle target.

But with the Magpies now short of experienced center-backs at the club , Mike Williamson is still out with his ankle injury,   it seems to us he would be a good acquisition.

Liam is not young at 27 years-old,  but he has a lot of Premier League experience with both Aston Villa and Birmingham, and he could do a job for Newcastle this season, if he was brought to Tyneside  in early January.

We don’t  know what the situation is with him at Birmingham,  but maybe even a loan deal through the end of the season would be good.

And then depending on how he performs for Newcastle could decide if Alan Pardew makes him a permanent transfer in the summer.

The 6’2″ center-back, who started his career at West Ham before moving to Aston Villa back in 2001,  can also play at left back.

He was capped 8 times at the England U21 level and Liam has played around 230 games in the English Premier League.

Liam played 95 times for Aston Villa with 75 starts and 7 goals, and he has 171 appearances for Birmingham with 168 starts  and 11 goals.

What do you think, and if you don’t rate Liam who else could we sign?

Comments welcome.

I think Liam is more than a decent player, and could do a good job for us.
Well worth a punt, but this has been on and off quite a few times now.

So next game i think we’ll have two possible scenarios at the back 4.
    Santon – Simmo – Perch – Raylor
    Simmo – Kadar – Perch – Raylor/Santon.

I can’t see it going any differently than those two. I hope Santon starts, i think Raylor just played himself out of the team against Chelsea.

hes more of a utility defender, if taylor’s injury is serious as reported then we will need a specialist to replace him ..

Santon has played CB for Italy U21, so that is also a possibilty.
But ye, if Kadar doesn’t start, then he’s done and dusted for sure, no doubt about that.

Davy…me 2 i cant wait to see him play, Raylor has done great but i think against the big teams Man c, Man u Chelsea he was exposed, but fair play to him for his commitment.

not only against big teams mate, Rodagella and SWP exposed quite well too, over and over again.
He’s positioned himself way too high up the pitch, gets passed and never sees the ball again. It’s just no good.

When I heard the news yesterday that both Alex and Anelka had handed in and had their tranfer requests accepted it made me think, why don’t we hoy a boid for the pair of them, Alex is a great CB and we need a CB atm and Anelka is a fantastic ST and will get us goals no doubt. I don’t know what the combined fee would have to be to get the both of them but I doubt it would be anything over the top.

I noticed Pards getting annoyed with him pushing to high up the pitch yesterday, Dont get me wrong he has done really well and has won games for us but against the top teams you need quality…sometimes commitment is not enough.

Now would be a good time to overhaul the back four. Pardew needs to find a role for Santon for sure Kader should also get a look in. If he isnt better than Perch then he has no future in the premierleague to be honest. Ridgewell sounds like Cr*p. We should be looking for more versatile players like Ogude, Pieters or Maduro

NOT GOOD, If saylor has ruptured is achillies tendon we will be lucky to see him back for pre season. I ruptured mine on the 1st Sept, i wont be back at work till March at the earliest.

Think Ridgewell could be a good punt for cover, but i would love us to tempt Sir Alex with a cheeky bid of 4/5 million for Johnny Evans in Jan. He has got a bit of stick recently but is a top class player with the potential to improve further playing beside colo regulary.

Hes young 23, within our wages, over 50 games for united and 30 international caps and can also provide cover at lb and rb.

NornIronToon Ive said a few times as well that we should also look at Jonny Evans, hes young and has time to get better and develope, he can be great for us and by the look or the Smalling, Jones partnership at Man Utd I doubt he’ll get too many games.. considering that theres Vidic and Ferdinand there also.

Ridgewell hasn’t played CB for 2yrs because he’s nearly as bad as Perch at CB a massive Brum fan called Bluenose said that on here the other month. Hope we sign Pieter’s that can play both LB expertly & CB well enough But let’s also sign a Proper CB aswell even if he’s older like Alex or Squillaci coz CB’s & keepers get better as they get older but not 2 old that they grow roots like sol lol.

    rb Santon
    cb Collo
    cb Evans
    lb Pieters

I’d love us to line up like this after Jan. Williamson fit to provide cover with Tav, Kadar and Raylor. Simpson will go in Jan after refusing to sign…

obviously we would need an all round old fashioned centre back to replace tayl’s , he’s a massive loss for us .
id like us to try and find another ball playing centre back in colo’s mould also tho ,
love the combination of the two styles , and its always good to have defenders who can score , both our centre backs are dangerous in the oppositions box

Santon played for the Italy Under 21
Liam Ridgewell played for the England Under 21 too
Tamas Kadar is already a Hungarian International

James Perch NEITHER won any Under 19 nor Under 21 for England

Don’t any of you follow football outside of the north-east? Pieters is out injured for the foreseeable future with a broken foot. We took a chance with Marveaux, and that backfired badly – no more signing injured players.

Pardew has worked wonders and I would be the last to criticise him but one thing puzzles me! Why has Santon not got any game time this season? He has a first class pedigree and played CL for Inter! Now, because of the injuries he’s gonna be thrown in at the deep end I suspect.

Just one other thing; maybe I’m missing something but when Jonas got suspended for the Chelsea game we should have had a more defensively minded player in front of Ryan Taylor, given the amount of work Jonas does defending!

Ah well having said that, we should’ve been playing against 10 men after 4 mins yesterday; but we were pathetic down our left side and they could’ve been 4 up at half time!

Really hard lines on Stephen Taylor. Did a captain’s job after Colo went off and has made great strides this season under Pards after stagnating under several previous managers. Good luck, Tayls.

A ruptured Achilles tendon will take more than the rest of the season for Taylor. He’ll miss most of next too. Obviously they wont tell us that though. Like Ben Arfa we’ll find out in real time…
