There were emotional scenes yesterday all around the Premier League as a minute’s applause took place before the games yesterday to honor the life and career of Gary Speed.
Gary Speed – Legend
And while the big tribute will take place at the next home game against Swansea City on 17th December there were some emotional scenes yesterday at St. James’ Park.
John Carver was seen with his arm around the fourth assistant Mark Halsey and he was sobbing uncontrollably, much like Shay Given had done last week before the Villa game at Swansea last Sunday.
That was only an hour or so after it has been learned that Gary had committed suicide overnight.
Newcastle players applaud during Gary Speed tribute yesterday
Newcastle fans chanted “Stand up for Gary Speed” during the more than one minute’s applause, and they kept his spirit alive throughout the game with their chants and waving of the black and white scarves, and it was very touching to watch it all.
And it was terrific to see the advertising hoardings surrounding the pitch yesterday showing placards that read “Gary Speed – Legend”.
And Soccer Am Wales have put together this short video of Gary’s fantastic career, which is a fitting tribute to the great man, who is sadly no longer with us.
If any of our readers want to put together a video honoring Gary Speed’s life and career, with special emphasis on his time at Newcastle, please do and send it to me via the comment form.
I’ll put it in an article and into one of the columns on this blog, and leave it there as a lasting tribute to the Welshman.
Gary was a real hero of mine along with Bobby Robson – two fantastic men who I admired so much – and they did so much good in the world of football.
