Newcastle certainly need to bring in a couple of defenders in the January transfer window, now that Steven Taylor is out for the season.
Kolo Toure – coming to Newcastle?
But the reports yesterday that Newcastle will turn to Kolo Toure of Manchester City are surely way off the mark.
Don’t get me wrong, the former Arsenal Ivorian is a terrific center-back, but every buy Newcastle make these days seems to be with an eye on the future.
When they strayed from that policy 18 months ago and signed the then 35 year-old Sol Campbell, the deal turned out to be a disaster with Sol just no longer good enough for the Premier League.
Kolo is said to be unhappy at City, and has even been criticizing the club, and would be available for £5M, but can you see Mike Ashley turning over £5M for a 30 year-old?
Of course Alan Pardew would also like to sign a center-back who is a proven palyer in the Premier League, which is why we may see Liam Ridgewell of Birmingham come through the door in January.
And maybe a loan deal for Kolo would be a good deal, and certainly he’s still a very good player, but his wages must also be sky high.
So we just don’t see Kolo Toure arriving at Newcastle in January.
We’d be happy to get any two of Erik Pieters of PSV, Liam Ridgewell or Montpellier defender Yanga-Mbiwa through the door in early January.
And since we have heard nothing yet of the extent of Coloccini’s injury, we wonder if he has any chance of making the game at Norwich on Saturday?
What do you think?
