Alan Pardew has rightly said that Newcastle’s best team can give any team in the English Premier League a game.
Newcastle are interested in 23 year-old Brazilian defender Douglas
And we have to agree with that, and in fact in the three games against the two Manchester clubs and Chelsea recently we showed that.
And if the lads had some luck in the Man City and Chelsea games, they could have even won those games.
So that’s not a problem and even though Steven Taylor is now out for the season, we think a fit Mike Williamson can do the job, and if he was in the team last Saturday’s that’s the strongest side we can field at the moment.
Of course we are threadbare in the center-half position, so it was good to see Newcastle are interested in FC Twente’s 23 year-old Douglas Franco Teixeira of FC Twente – known as Douglas.
We haven’t seen this lad play, but with his contract running out next June, he could be an absolute bargain, although other clubs both in England and on the continent are also in for him.
And having just got his Dutch citizenship, he will very likely be included in the Holland squad shortly, and maybe be a part of their Euro 2012 squad.
So how much would it take to get this 6’4″ old fashioned center-back to Newcastle next month? £2M maybe – if that.
The Newcastle bench strength is not good enough, and we all know that, but we are hopping the Newcastle Board will bring in at least a center-back and a striker next month.
The deal to sign Modibo Maiga fell through last week because of a concern about the Mali striker’s knee, but the lad seems to have taken what must have been a huge personal disappointment very well, and we wish him well in the future.
Alan Pardew is a down to earth guy, and he talked about the strength of the Newcastle team today:
“Our best team can compete with any team in this Premier League.” “Whether we have got a strong enough squad to keep us consistently in the top seven all year, we will have to wait and see.”
“But certainly, we still have a nice margin over the rest.” “Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea are way, way above us in terms of budgets and everything else.”
“So we are doing absolutely fabulously, make no mistake about that.” “It’s dangerous to look behind, so we will look up and go from there.”
We agree with Alan completely on those comments, and Newcastle continuing to do well depends as much on keeping some of our very top players, in addition to bringing in new players to significantly strengthen the squad.
One player we’d like to keep is Cheick Tiote, but we think it could be touch and go if indeed Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool come in for him during January.
We’ll have to wait and see on that one.
