Newcastle vs West Brom – Match Preview

Newcastle need a win tonight against WBA at St. James’ Park.

That would give Newcastle 30 points from their first 17 league games, which is an excellent total for this time of the year.

Newcastle will be able to field almost their strongest team, but we do expect James Perch to start alongside Fab Coloccini in the middle of Newcastle’s defense, although if the game warrants it, we could even see Mike Williamson get a run-out in the last 15 minutes or so.

Yohan Cabaye is not available unfortunately,  as he will be serving a one match ban for picking up his 5th yellow card in Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Swansea.

And young Haris Vuckic could get a start tonight, although Frenchman Mehdi Abeid is also available, and both 19 year-olds were substitutes last Saturday, which tells us they have been impressive in training.

Dan Gosling is also unavailable, and will serve the second match of his three game suspension for being sent off at Norwich.

This is the team we expect Alan Pardew to pick for the game:

Krul
Simpson Coloccini Perch Santon
Obertan Vuckic Tiote Gutierrez
Best Ba
Subs: Elliot Williamson Taylor (R)  Abeid Ameobi (Sa) Ameobi (Sh) Ben Arfa

Ben Arfa could get a start either on the right wing, or in place of Leon Best up front, and the impressive young Sammy Ameobi could get a start in place of Obertan out on the right wing.

And we suppose we could even see Mike Williamson start tonight but he is still a bit short of match practice, and we’d be surprised is he does get a start.

Ryan Taylor is expected to be fit again, but we expect him to be on the bench,  after 20 year-old Davide Santon has looked very good in the last couple of games, and now what Davide needs is a string of games in the first team.

The keys to the game seem fairly straight forward.

Newcastle need to be as strong at the back as they were on Saturday against Swansea, and hopefully can even  get a second clean sheet in a row.

That feat has been achieved only once this season, and happened to be the in the first two games  at home to Arsenal  (0-0) and away at Sunderand (1-0 win).

Up front we have to hope that Demba  Ba can get on the goals trail again, although he again looked sharp on Saturday and was very unlucky not to score.

Leon Best is also due a goal,  and has been stuck on three goals for the season for a long time now.

It would also help to get an early goal, especially after toiling for 90 minutes on Saturday, without being able to  score.

As expected former Middlesbrough James Morrison is definitely out of the game for WBA due to a hamstring problem, which forced him off late in the game at Blackburn.

Cameroon international Somen Tchoyi – who scored a hat-trick at Newcastle in the final game of last season – will miss his second successive game due to his wife recently delivering a baby.

So he’ll not score against Newcastle tonight – thank goodness for that.

We need a win tonight, it’s just as simple as that.

Howay The Lads!!

Do we see Ben Arfa in trainig everyday no – Pardew does if he is not happy with what he sees then he is the man paid to make the decisions.
I dont see Ben Arfa every day but every game bar Everton last season (which typically I missed) I have been under whelmed to say the least.
I trust Pardew and his staffs decision on this.
Sticking my neck out – if we could recoup the money we paid in Janury for HBA I would be tempted to move him on.

Nah Selby – I wouldnt. he may be a luxury player at the moment – but its not as if we’re staring a relegation dogfight in the face and need a Bowyer / barton type. We’re doing alright and I think the lad will do just fine as the season progresses.

Thought for today. If Shola was a new young player or foreign star who’d played like he has this season, scored the equaliser against Spurs, hit the bar against Chelsea etc – would he still be lampooned like he is by some on this site? If Ben Arfa was old useless Shola and had got caught in possession as many times as he has this season, would he still be our greatest hope? And if Ferguson (for example) had played the steady game that Perch did last time out, would he be the greatest young defender we’d ever had or if he’d played as Obertan did in the first half against Norwich, would he have been jeered as much when he was brought off? Just pointing out that prejudice means exactly that – pre-judging!
In case any of you are wondering, I love Benny – but I also respect what Shola can bring and I also think it’s far too early to write Obertan off as “useless”.

Selbymag – no way, we got to remember he has just come back from injury, it’s bound to take time for him to get back to his best, we have to give him his chance! selling him in january would be a ridiculous decision

Magpie6699 spot on lad, people have formed opinions on our players and regardless how they perform they will stick by those opinions no matter what for fear of looking like fools. The new opinion that is currently being formed is that Pardew is a useless manager…wonder how much he will have to do for this club for these idiots to back down on that one?

PS The only player I consider to be useless i.e. detracts from the side is now Smith. And that’s based on observation, not prejudice – I would be ecstatic if he came on and played well – but it never happens!

we can’t actually sell anyone who was registered as being brought by our club in the summer and this includes Ben Arfa as registration as a newcastle player outright didn’t happen until his loan deal was finalised in the summer! Means we can’t sell Obertan, Cabaye, Ba, or Ben Arfa!

just because someone plays for the club does not mean you cannot pass judgment. if a player is good a la DEMBA BA, then what is wrong in calling someone not as good or bad.

Im not against Ben Arfa as a talent, im more against his attitude and beleive he is too selfish a player to be a creative “number 10”. This does not fit in with the current team ethic / team spirit.
He holds the ball too long and fails to pick what appear to me to be simple and the “right” pass.
Ok its probably easier to pick a pass from my seat in the Milburn but im not on umpty grand a week.
So if he is not a number 10 and does not want to play on the wing a’la Marseille where does he play.
Not central midfield as Cabaye is superior in many ways and is a proper grafter as well as technically gifted.
So bit part player which will no doubt lead to him hoying the teddy out so do we head this all off hold our hands up and admit it didnt work.
    For me yes.
Not jumping on the young foreigner not good enough its more attitude and application not matching the talent.

I wonder which tactical formation Jose pardew will deploy tonight? Obertan picks himself as old pardew has to justify spending 3million on him ben arfa might get a run out if he follows santons example and compares pardew to fergie or moreno instead of kean.

Good shout Ross Armstrong…4-4-2 diamond with hba replacing cabaye, tiote dropping deeper and arfa advancing into the hole behind best and ba, although I doubt pardew will go for it like, it’s a spot on formation especially at home against a side we should be beating

Should be a better atmosphere tonight being an evening game.
Can’t believe people bitching about HBA, he’ll play when pards sees he is ready and giving his all, the kid refuses to play for the reserves so what does that say about his attitude?…
However I don’t agree he is a selfish player, his whole game is about creating chances for other, he has never been a prolific scorer, he is just off the pace a bit imo.
We really need a win today, oh and is the team confirmed yet or is this sky sports?

Love a wind up, especially when the other side clearly hasn’t a clue what their on about, makes it easy pickings 😛 I’m not defensive because in my opinion he doesn’t need defending, the job that he has done speaks for itself, so you either whine and moan and act like an armchair manager like you’re doing or you sit down shut up and let him be the actual manager which I’m betting is a much harder job than just demanding he plays “the best team at his disposal”

I put my faith in Pards, if you guys were running this team we’d probably have half the amount of points today 😉

Ben Arfa will play when he’s ready, don’t worry guys. He’s mint, but out of shape. Then I prefer the power of Best, he was cracking last season and also he started well before getting injured this term.
