One very positive thing coming out of last night’s game, amid all the doom and gloom surrounding the defeat, was the display of 19 year-old Haris Vuckic.
Alan Pardew – we were not disciplined or controlled
Haris was making his first Premier League start ever, and he looked a class player and was unlucky not to score a few times.
But the 6’3″ central midfielder already looks a majestic player who will have a big future in the game.
But he couldn’t stop this Newcastle side going down to their fourth defeat in the last six games , and continue a terrible run of results, since we beat Everton 2-1 way back on November 5th.
Pardew was asked if this six game run with only two points is a concern, and this is what he said:
“Of course the run is a concern. I thought that was evident too.” “At points we weren’t disciplined an controlled – even though you couldn’t fault their commitment to get back into it.”
“Mainly because we were so desperate to win I thought we lacked a bit of control of the game.” “Our discipline wasn’t where it was normally and that worried me a bit. We need to make sure that’s right.”
“We turned the ball over and were exposed, which isn’t like us.” “The third goal just caught us on the break. there was a bit of fortune in the goal – more or less one of their first attacks of the second half,”
“But the first half was where we got ourselves in trouble. We didn’t play well enough in the first half and were caught at times by their front two. Their front two made us edgy, I thought.”
“I felt sorry for Haris. He was terrific. He had two terrific efforts and I think he showed everybody here that he’s going to be a player for us for sure.”
The Newcastle manager also said the reason Davide Santon was replaced at half time was because of a knee injury, but it’s not thought to be serious, so that’s good news.
Davide seems to have a troublesome knee and it’s not the first time it’s bothered him this season.
West Brom’s game plan of defending stubbornly and catching Newcastle on quick breaks out of defense worked like a treat, and both Shane Long and Peter Odemwingie were just too quick for the Newcastle defense.
But this will now be a testing time for Newcastle manager Alan Pardew and the rest of the coaching staff, as Newcastle must quickly get back on track, and become a lot more solid as a team, especially at the back.
That’s the way the lads were playing at the beginning of the season, when the defense was the bed-rock of the side, and we were not conceding so many goals.
What do you think?

He deserves a run in the team but he didn’t help out Tiote as much as Cabaye does.
He’s still learning the trade.
Has loads of good qualities but as a sub I would think.
He’s getting very close.
He might actually be better alongside Cabaye

Comment #44Think Obertan needs a break from team. I believe he has potential to be a quality player for us but is sufferibg from crowds reaction. Last night every time he lost the ball it was met with huge groans and abus by most around me. Meant he started trying too hard to impress.

To be fair Tiote didn’t help himself much last night, he was poor by his own standards plus we are desperate for a goal scoring midfielder and Vukic was desperately unlucky not to score

Dont know about playing long ball. Perch did it every time but he is a muppet. We have played some lovely stuf this year and when a goal down against a team on the defence, and you have best ba ameobi etc up front its a worth a go. Ben arfa wasnt able to break them down was he? And who are the better players on the bench? Finally if pardew is so tactically inept how do you explain 1. our current position? 2. The fact that in the vast majority of games this season our performances and results have been better in the second half? Showing pardew is able to make correct tactical decisions when it matters. You would think we were bottom man get a grip

Comment #50So by all accounts,Colo and Tiote had poor games last night. Every team is bound to struggle when 2 of its best players have a bad day at the office,on the same night.

Thank you guys, you’ve just illustrated my point
“why do you have to make a bloody comment to prove how much of a genius you are.”
Do you think that we are not able to watch the games and make our own unspoken opinions ourselves.
Thank you for showing me the error of my ways and please forget I ever said anything. I await your next intriguing post as soon as the light bulb goes off.

Comment #52Not sure what was wrong with Tiote last night his distribution was woeful meaning we were not retaining possession obviously resulting in the first goal.
Now his passing is average at best most weeks but the big worry was that he was getting muscled off the ball too easily in 50/50 challenges. What purpose does he serve if he is unable to break up play and make a 10 yard pass to one of his own team.
He looked like a player who already knows his long term future is elsewhere.
The biggest difference last night was the pace at which WBA attacked us, they won the ball and got bodies forward quickly and in Long had a great outlet who destroyed us.
There was only Vukic in black and white who displayed any urgency getting forward and should have earned his reward with a goal.

Comment #53Seems to me as if Ap had his idea for us playing a 433 / 451 type of formation originally, but not having a proper left back, and the set back with HBA pre season – 442 was forced on him to give some protection on the flanks.
It worked for a while so he stuck with it.
Trouble with playnig that way is its very easy to figure out. I think as well as losing a bit of form and a few players, teams have figured us out a bit now.
at the start of the season we were expected to be dreadful so caught a few people out.
It is my firm opinion that to compete in the top half of the prem you need to have a fluid system, and players technically capable of adapting, and tactically smart enough to do it.
We look a little bit lost at the moment – missing someone to boss games.

Comment #56which 2 goals wer Perchs fault then?
First one.. Coloccini didnt get an early tackle in and the midfield wer no were to be seen
Second one.. Tiote and Simpson should never have allowed Long to get the header back across goal
Third one.. Again cross should never have been allowed to come in and perhaps Perch should of reacted quicker but it was a good finish by Scharner..
Ba’s Free Kick.. Perch pulled away a man from the wall in which Ba’s free kick went through tht position
There is other players on the pitch the blame but people are constantly just slating Perch when he’s done nothing wrong.. He was better than Coloccini last night who was terrible.. Perch was also good against Swansea in which we kept a clean sheet… Yes he’s not the best but that doesnt matter if he’s in the team he should bne supported no matter what

Comment #60In fact – dare I say it, round about now is when you see the need for a player like Barton.
I agree he woulnt have been getting in the team at the start of the season so would probably have kicked someones head in, but we do seem to be missing the vocal blood and thunder type leader on the pitch.
Saylor has been that at times and he cant get back soon

Comment #61Regarding the long ball – to a certain extent this is correct. Timmy never knocks it short to a centre back or full back to build play. When was the last time you saw him throw a ball out wide or short. Last night without Cabaye we were not demanding the ball apart from Vukic in 2nd half.
This results in the ball been forced long to Ba / Best

Should Ed not run stories like the stadium name change “Because it’s negative”??? Get in the real world you idiot.
Where better than to “sound off” about stuff than with fellow supporters – Sometimes we’re not doing it to have a go at the club or even at fans who disagree we’re just doing it to get it off our chest FFS.

Comment #65Many times, especially one time I recall we had them on the back foot and Tiote got the ball and played it back.He was so defensive last night and as someone else commented earlier our counter attacks were at snails pace.
Sometimes it looks like when Simmo goes on a run that Obertan doesn’t know what to do.
He doesn’t take the defenders away enough to let others run through.
It’s called a footballing brain.
We are a very one tracked mind when playin 442 and so easy to read unless u have Cabaye’s through ball.
