There are two center-backs Newcastle have been linked with recently, and we think either one could fit the bill as the fourth center-back at Newcastle.
Brazilian Douglas is interesting Newcastle
The first one is 23 year-old 6’4″ Brazilian center-back Douglas from FC Twente, whom he joined back in 2007, from Brazilian club Joinville.
The good thing about this player is that his contract runs out next summer, and presumably he could be signed for a small fee next month, or come in as a free transfer in the summer.
Of course there are other clubs interested in the player, and he is said to be an old fashioned defender who is very good in the air, and that’s important with Coloccini not being the tallest of central defenders.
Clubs interested include Aston Villa and Queens Park Rangers in England, and Dutch clubs PSV Eindhoven and Ajax, and the news is that Newcastle have watched him ever since they were tracking former FC Twente player Cheick Tiote.
Cheick has been a huge success at Newcastle, but may also be leaving us next month for one of the big clubs after him – but we hope that doesn’t happen.
Douglas is said to be one of the best center-backs in the Eredivisie, but the trouble is whether he will be available in January.
The right footed player has played 28 times this season for Twente with two goals.
It’s interesting that Ajax may be interested in Douglas, because the center-back that Graham Carr is said to be recommending (we don’t know if that is true) is Ajax’ 6’3″ center-back Jan Vertonghen.
Jan Vertonghen – Ajax Belgium International
Dutch sources have recently been reporting that Newcastle are interested in the 24 year-old, and he again fits the bill being a tall and tough tackling center-back who is good in the air, and his contract at Ajax runs out in only 18 months time.
Jan has already attracted the attention of top clubs like Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in the summer .
The Belgium International is a left-footed player, so that’s one difference with Douglas, and while he usually plays at center back, he can also play anywhere on the left side, or even in defensive midfield, so he could be a good buy.
Vertonghen started with Belgium club Beerschot AC, and moved to the Dutch powerhouse in 2007, and he’s played for them 195 times with 23 goals.
Its interesting that his agent had said earlier this month that no offers have yet arrived for the Belgium international, who is also being trackled by Tottenham, Liverpool (that’s a surprise) and Arsenal.
His agent Mustapha Nakhla told Calciomercato.com on 11th December:
“There is interest, but nothing concrete.” “There’s been no official offer that has come to me nor Ajax.”
Oh well, maybe Newcastle are preparing an offer for the player.
We’d love to see any one of these players signed in January – here’s hoping.
Comments welcome.

Comment #5Could do with a win on monday to ease the pressure going into two tough games, i think we have a very good chance of winning as bolton really have no obvious strengths that i can see, i dont think their particularly strong in any position except maybe gary cahill, think tiote and cabaye may be able to dominate davies and reo coker, 2-0 MAGS!!!

Comment #11Recipe:
One bottle (750 mL) of red wine (suggestions: Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot)
One peeled and sliced orange (keep peel to add zest to taste into cooking pot)
1/4 cup of brandy
8-10 cloves
2/3 cup honey or sugar
3 cinnamon sticks
1 tsp fresh or 2 tsp ground ginger (allspice can be substituted)
Serves 4-6
Preparation:
To make the perfect cup of mulled wine, combine all ingredients in either a large pot or a slow cooker. Gently warm the ingredients on low to medium heat (avoid boiling), for 20-25 minutes. Stir occasionally to make sure that the honey or sugar has completely dissolved. When the wine is steaming and the ingredients have been well blended it is ready to serve. Ladle the mulled wine into mugs (leave seasonings behind) and enjoy!
Try it lads I’m buzzing after one cup. Got to turn the radiator off.

Comment #15Samba would be by far the best option but his sell-on value would might not be fantastic as he’s not a young’un . Just a complte beast of a CB.
We need a comanding CB who will get to 99% of headers without fear and bang in a few goals-just like Taylor does.
Samba does exactly that.
In my opinion getting either of these 2 young lads to come in might be asking for trouble as its midway through a crazy prem season and they’ll will take a fare few games to get up to speed almost certainly. By then how many goals could we have conceded?
Go for tried and tested Prem CB’s in my opinion. At least until the summer when we have more time to bed in new, young players with a proper pre-season and whatnot.
Even a defensive colossus like wor Colo took a while to find his feet. We can’t afford to leak goals like we’re doing now for much longer.

Comment #16Same to you Marty 🙂
Would love it if we managed to get one of these, more chance of Douglas but I doubt either tbh, probs an unknown that’ll turn out to be decent… gone are the days of “presents” for the Toon fans… for now anyway.

Comment #17So if collaz picks up a yellow int Bolton game heel be out of the scousers game, meaning a similar situation to the Norwich farce. I bet carroll cant wait. Heel bully 2 makeshift centrebacks all over the school yard. I bet he cant chuffin wait.

Here is a video of yesterday’s Twente vs PSV encounter. Our reported defensive target Douglas played for Twente and made an error for the PSV’s winning goal. What seems more important to me is the class and quality of Tim Matavz, who scored both goals for PSV. He is quick, strong, can score with both feet and of course can head the ball as well. I really think we should go for him at one point in the future. He is from Slovenia (like myself and Haris Vuckic 😉 ) and I think he is the best striker ever to come from our country.

Jan Vertonghen is a no go for me, 10mil would get us Cahill or Samba so why would we pay more for someone with no Premier experience ? Not seen a lot of Onuoha but I would love to see Tavernier brought back in from his loan spell

Ur forgetting wage difference Samba and Cahill would be after 60k+ atleast I’d guess. Vertonghen might be after 30-40k tends to be why PL clubs shop abroad

Jack – His loan ends in a few days am sure… nd Vertonghen is immense imo he’s better than Samba but as someones said he would need time to settle in.. a would love us to sign Samba then if Colo leaves at end of season sign Vertonghen or someone young with abit experience.. Onuoha is really good and defo england class..plus Man City have said he’s available cos he needs to play

Yeah but if you work out the difference between a higher transfer fee and lower wages to a lower transfer fee to higher wages there won’t be a great deal of difference I don’t think, the biggest factor for any signing we make will be the potential sell on fee 😉

Think it was, though we were linked and tried to sign everyone with two legs if we were to listen to the club 😉
@toon tom
To be fair to Ashley he did turn down a massive bid for Carrol from Spurs and 35mil would have got him from any club, so the selling aspect doesn’t bother me that much it’s knowing he wont reinvest that money
