There has been some developments to suggest that Newcastle may be bringing Lyon left-back Aly Cissokho to Tyneside next month.
Aly Cissokho – seems to be available form Lyon
Aly was a target pf the Newcastle club in the summer, and certainly the 24 year-old left back is a very good player and we think he could do well at the club.
But the fee Lyon were asking for him put Newcastle off, and it’s still said to be around €8M.
However, with today’s conversion rate, with the Euro being very weak because of the state of the European economy, that’s about £6.7M, and that may be a more reasonable fee for Newcastle to pay.
Jean-Michel Aulas is the president of Olympique Lyonnais, and he had this to say to OLTV today:
“We’ve signed Mouhamadou Dabo to replace Cissokho,”
Lyon have to cut their wage bill, as one of a number of things they are doing to get their financial house in order, and it has been rumored that one of their big players could leave in January.
It seems that Cissokho, who is of Senegalese descent, is the likely player.
The two big clubs said to be interested in the once capped French International are Newcastle United and Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.
Over the summer months, Cissokho was said to be extremely keen to join Newcastle, and of course he will feel right at home on Tyneside, with Newcastle having signed several French players to their much improved squad.
We don’t know if there is any truth in this story, but certainly Newcastle are looking for some good defenders who would be available in January and Alan Pardew would like to bring in two defenders to shore up Newcastle’s defense for the run-in to the season.
Cissokho stands 5’11” tall and signed for Lyon from Porto in 2009, for a fee said to be in the region of €15M, and he has played 84 times with two goals for the French club.

Comment #7No way are we signing a fullback and CB.
Pards already said we’re signing one MAYBE two. Well the CB is the certainty it appears as Ashley wants one in. So it’s a maybe on the Striker?! even though we’re losing Ba to ACN (to say nothing of Tiote).
No way are we getting a fullback no sireeeeee….

Comment #8Do we really need him? Santon looks to be a class player. Raylor despite most concerns has surprised most of us and providing we don’t lose Simpson we are ok with full backs as the CB issue should take precedent at the moment.
We haven’t won since Steven Taylor has been out and for me he has been a huge miss. Samba would be a good replacement however I can’t see the club paying over the topfor any player therefore if they cost more than £5M, (striker apart), I’d suggest it’s nothing more than paper talk.
If Tiote goes Cabaye can play in the defensive role and following Vukic’s debut last week I feel he needs and deserves more pitch time.
Ben Arfa has been a disappointment for me but like Obertan he need more time to settle. I’d also like to see Ferguson and Sami Amoebi given more time on the wings and lets not forget Jonas plays at LB for Argentina so if we have issues put him in as LB or RB and give the kids a try on the wing as they are more than happy to run all day.
Overall we’re in good condition and if we sign a quality striker and in this window spending £10-15M it will be a good window and allow us to move forward.
We should be pushing for a top 10 place however some of the key board assasins and boo boys at the matches want shooting.
Booing players like Obertan and Perch kills team morale and the confidence of the players. This will affect team performances and when team morale goes down results suffer.
It’s about time we got behind the club and became realistic about it’s future and remember that nothing is fixed overnight. We have a good foundation and we’re moving in the right direction.

Quite right.
Booing anyone wearing a b&w shirt is unacceptable.
Merry Christmas to all.
Special wishes to Ed, thanks for all the articles during what must be a difficult time.
You’re my nomination for the No9 shirt.

Comment #14Can’t see us getting him as he’s a left back and Pardew said we’re alright for left backs in this club… I think realistically we’re more likely to get that tall defender from Ajax… I’d love to see Samba at this club mind.

Comment #15Can’t see how Pardew can say we are ok for left back’s when the only one we have is out injured??? And although Raylor give his all he simply is not a left back

Comment #23Santon is a better Right back than he is Left back and he’d be more comfortable there.. having Aly and Santon on either side we’d have one hell of a set of attacking full backs

Comment #32Would be good buy if we can get him, one other thing is i reckon if this happens, Santon will be MOVED to LM like Spurs did with Bale, Santons attacking is soo much better than either Obertan or Jonas.
Cisssoko LB
Santon LM
with both swaping with each other when one other is attacking could work well.

Dec 24, 2011 at 8:54 PM
Comment #33gorskino10 – Another thing with Santons attacking ability is he is a tremendous crosser of the ball, If he played LW like Bale a reckon he could easily get us between 5 and 10 per season.. Jonas and Obertan will be lucky to get 5 between them

Hope the New Year will be a happy and peaceful one for you.
Best wishes too, to all the many contributors on this great blog. We don’t always see eye to eye about everything that goes on at the Toon but one thing we are all agreed about – Newcastle United is our life and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
