Newcastle Make Official Enquiry For Jan Vertonghen

Newcastle have made an official enquiry about Ajax’s Belgium International center-back Jan Vertonghen.

Jan Vertonghen – Newcastle have made official enquiry

That’s according to the Newcastle Journal, but whether he is available is a good question, since Ajax would need to bring in a replacement next month, if they sell their 6’3″ center-back.

Newcastle have been linked with a number of  center-backs already, in addition to Vertonghen,  and they include West Ham United’s James Tomkins, Chelsea’s Alex,  FC Twente’s Douglas, Birmingham’s’ Liam Ridgewell, Montpellier’s Yanga-Mbiwa and only late yesterday we were linked with Manchester City’s out of favor Nedum Onuoha.

As well as inquiring about Vertonghen,  Newcatsle have already had a bid of close to  £3M  for their 22 year-old England U21 center-back Tonkins,  and had it immediately turned down by West Ham .

Newcastle are not only looking at a fix for their central defensive woes for the rest of the season, but they would like to make the transfer of a center-back into the club next month a strategic move and a long term solution too.

But Newcastle will not panic in trying to capture a top-class center-back in January, as Alan Pardew had this to say:

“We know in the transfer window that a defender would be very, very helpful at the moment. Certainly we could do with a centre-half because we need a bit more presence in the back-four.”

“Williamson has been training again and he looks like he’s getting closer and I think he’ll be a big asset for us when he’s up and running again.”

“But we might need another one because if we lose Williamson or Colo, we’ll look like we’re short.”  “Generally I think we’re having to look at our squad because we’re stretched, especially defensively.”

“We have made some calls to try and find out who is available.” “Its a difficult window to get a good player when people don’t want to lose their good players. It’s not just difficult for us, it’s difficult for every team.”

“It’s a difficult window, we’ll have to see how it pans out.”

It’s always difficult bringing in a player in January, and of course they have no time to settle in with a pre-season, which they get when they arrive in the summer.

But Newcatsle rather desperately need a tall center-back who is good in the air, and the sooner he is brought in the better it will be.

Comments welcome.

@jon.c a relegation fight? really? we’re still 7th in the league and 6 points above 10th place west brom. 13 points above relegation zone….and you come on here to say we’re gonna be involved in a relegation battle? I see the neggers are back now we’re on a bad streak.

    haha

hmmm how some ppl think, when we get our first team – saylor, we have a half decent team, obertan, keep him as far away from the first team as pos, he is a waste of a place in the starting line up or banch,, offer zero to our team

So what about this for Bolton?
    —————-Krul
    –Simmo Colo Willo Raylor
    —————-Tiote
    —Sameobi Jonas
    ——–Cabaye Vuckic
    —————–Ba

That should give us the attacking presence we need, and also…hopefully Tiote doesn’t track too far up field because he seems to be making some serious errors and for some reason keeps trying to shoot. Lol

Do Newcastle “really” know what they need?? Or is it all smoke & mirrors?

AP talks so much drivel over transfers, its beyond comprehension. Yes, he has zero control over who (if anyone) comes in and we all know it. Just has he has even less control over who leaves. Why doesn’t he just shut up and let FCB get on with it?

The fans are well aware we need more strength and where its needed – a blind man on a galloping horse could see the problems, they have been there for over 12 months, its nothing new.

We had a good summer with some excellent signings but this has clearly highlighted the deficiencies in the squad. These now need to be addressed if we are to build on what, up to now, has been a great start to the season.

Happy Christmas to all NUFC fans and a special thanks to “Ed” for a great job – hope your road to recovery is as smooth as possible.
