Newcastle played a total of 42 games this year and won 15 of them and lost 16.
Alan Pardew – Newcastle have done well this year
And strangely enough the rest of them were drawn – 11 games in all.
Alan Pardew has talked about the 2011 year for Newcastle today, after a disappointing end to the season when we again lost at Anfield, this time by a score of 3-1.
This is what Alan had to say:
“We’ve had a terrific year, we really have,” “I think that’s ten defeats in the whole of the year, and that’s not a bad statistic for a club that’s changed its team, the style of its play and lost a lot of big characters.”
“We’ve shown over the course of the year that we can be a force. We’ve had a really good calendar year, and we need to take that into next year now.”
If we do anything like we’ve done in this last year we might just surprise ourselves with our position in the league.”
The best way to look at this is to simply look at our record this year and here it is:
Competition Played Won Drawn Lost GF GA Points 2010 PL 19 5 5 9 28 26 20 2011 PL 19 8 6 5 26 25 30 FA Cup 1 0 0 1 1 3 Carling Cup 3 2 0 1 9 8 TOTALS 42 15 11 16 64 62 50
When you look at those figures it’s kind of average but the big difference is that we’ve taken 30 points from our 19 league games this season and only had 20 points from the same number of games last season.
So that’s really the big improvement, although surprisingly the goal difference this season of +1 is worse that last season when we had a +2 goal difference.
That’s probably because of the 17 goals we’ve conceded in the last eight games and only scored 9 – so the goal difference has been -8 over the last 8 league games – ouch.
In 38 league games this year – which is a full season – we’ve have earned 50 points, which would have seen us in 8th place in the league, if that had have been over last season – not too bad.
That’s how we’ve done this year, and we’re currently 7th top of the English Premier League, and that’s the highest we’ve been for a long time.
So things are still looking up from last season.

Comment #1As Pards said in the past, the real test is now i.e. when we are on a bad run.
I’d settle for top half of table and winning the FA cup. Not much to ask!!!

Comment #3Cannot argue with that, shows improvement if nothing else. I know everybody is getting a bit hyped up about the recent result but if at the start of the season we were offered comfortably 7th 4 points off 5th and 5 off 8th??? id imagine alot of people.
If we can regain form against some of the lower half teams and go on a run that resembles anything from the start of the season we could theoretically finish anywhere up to around 6th. As bad as we were last night i think with the addition of a few new players either in january or the summer and we will be moving forward maybe at a slower pace than we would like but its still improvement

Comment #4Really thought their left back and left winger (the 1 who scored a couple)were brilliant. We should get 2 players like that 🙂

Comment #5Shearerno9, agree with ya completely. We have a chance of reaching the top 8 if we buy in January, hope we do supplement the squad in Jan, really think we will.

Comment #6Were only short of a few first team players and then i think we will have one of the best squads we have had over recent years….
Dont fall into the same trap as some did with Bobby Robson…. we all know the downfall after he was removed

Comment #7Statistically we have improved year on year, but is that as a result of our development or is it really a bi-product of other teams degeneration? eg., Stoke, Everton, Fulham, Villa etc etc all much poorer than last season in addition to some greatly appreciated luck we had early in the campaign this time around….
Don’t want to appear overly negative but im a realist at the end of the day and I dont think as an outfit we’re all that good just yet….are we really better equipped than last year?
Cabaye is a great player but goals win games and how many did Nolan get?
Ba has turned out to be a great CF for us and will only get better, I’d take him ahead of Carroll although I rate big Andy very highly on his time with us.
Enrique v Santon…..I think we saw last night the mark that Santon has to aspire to….Jose is a huge miss for us.
Barton against Obertan is a no-contest….I’m sorry to all the Obertan lovers but the guy isn’t at the races for me….what an inept performance again last night. Offered nothing going forward and even less at the back to protect an over-exposed and under-skilled Danny Simpson. Barton free and Obertan 3.5m? oh dear…..
How would we be shaping up if we’d held onto the likes of Barton, Enrique, Nolan and added Ba to the equation we’ll never know….but imo I dont think we’ve moved forward on the pitch at all from last year….maybe on paper we have but if moves aren’t made in the transfer window to strengthen it could be a long hard run in to the end of the season

Comment #9A very important window coming up and one that has not been helped by Pardew saying that he is generally happy with the squad and not looking for another forward – WTF.
Must be music to Jabbas ears as we near the 40 point mark and looking at another Sky payment as well as sponsorship deals for shirts and the deathstar arena (played 3 won 0).
Lets see some evidence that the fatman and co want us to be top 10 and not, as a lot of fans believe a feeder/cash generator

Comment #10Good that we can see a 10point diffence.
Also I believe that a lot of teams are underperforming this year so we have stayed in 7th because no one else has picked up points.
There is negativity on the blog about our team and I understand it.
You say give em a chance,of course we will for the new and young players.
It’s just hard to watch a winger walk around with his hands in his pockets 😉 you expect that he knows how to run up the line and take on defenders, anyone that’s played at any level will know from you’re 8 years old that you attack the opposition especially when gifted with speed like Ober is.
Our defence isn’t that bad but our midfield and wingers are letting us down.
Cabaye is brill but Tiote has been poor of late.
Hope we can be more positive in the new year.
It’s not like we wanna overrun teams but just that the lads do their job and actually pull their weight on the field

Comment #11Sorry lads but I think that the wheels are about to come off – big time!
Obertan not up to it it would seem. The brilliant Ba off to the ANC and absolutely NO striker worthy of the name to step in in his place. Cabaye starting to look frustrated by it all.
Jonas, after a good start, getting back to his non productive and non effective performances.
Defence looking decidedly dodgy now that Saylor has gone for the season. Vuckic having his chance and quite frankly not showing anything at all. Even Ben Arfa looked out of his depth last night.
One or two more injuries and suspensions, with nothing of note coming in in January, and it doesn’t look good.
Sorry to be so negative but that’s the way I see it.
We all need to see the moths flying out of Ashley’s wallet in the next two or three weeks but unfortunately I don’t think the 3 ghosts will have visited OUR Scrooge this Christmas. Bah! Humbug!

Comment #12We will be OK. We might just end up in mid-table at the worst but hopefully with a few signings in January we could snatch a euro spot. Our performance last night was terrible but it was really the brilliance of Gerrard that turned the game around. Bellamy’s pace and direct runs is excactly what we’ve been missing since we sold him. If we sign a quality defender and a creative flair player that can pass and dribble I’ll be more than happy.
