Newcastle have been linked in the last few days with Young Boys striker Emmanuel Mayuka.
Emmanuel Mayuka – 21 year-old 5’10” striker at BSC Young Boys
The 21 year-old 5’10” striker says that Newcastle are a dream club, and of course he’d love to join Newcastle United – but who wouldn’t? 😀
Whether there’s any truth in this story we don’t know, but we would doubt it.
This is what the former Maccabi Tel Aviv striker said yesterday to Sky Sports News:
“Newcastle is a dream club, like Marseille, because their fans are the best there is,”
“That only shows me I have to work hard and score more goals.
“I’d love to play in a bigger league than the Swiss league.”
In May of last year Mayuka signed a five year contract with Swiss club BSC Young Boys, and this season he has 7 goals in 16 appearances for them, and in total has appeared 71 times with 23 goals for the Swiss club.
Mayuka has made no secret of the fact that he wants to play in a higher class league than the Swiss League, and would love to play in the English Premier League.
He has 22 caps and five goals for Zambia and made his debut in the 2007 COSAFA Cup, scoring the second goal in a 3–0 win over Mozambique, when he was just 17.
We were first linked with this player back in early December, when his agent Nir Karin told L’Equipe:
“In France, there are three clubs interested in him, though I can’t say anything specific about Lille,”
“I can tell you that Dynamo Kiev, Fulham and Newcastle are the three teams most serious on him this January.”
And then, as we reported at the time, his agent then said the following, so as not to upset his current club or their fans:
“Makuya is very happy at Young Boys, and likes the city of Bern and its people,”
It was interesting after the Liverpool game tonight that Alan Pardew told BBC Sports the club had a number of targets in January, and he talked of several targets.
So maybe Newcastle will try to bring in another striker after all, as well as a center-back, and while we’re not sure how good this lad is, he would probably cost less than £2M, which is in Mike Ashley’s ball-park.
We’d love to see a good center-back and a good striker brought in during the transfer window next month to fortify the side, since we still have a decent chance of finishing in the top eight this season.
