Happy New Year To Newcastle Fans Everywhere

1:19 pm, Sunday, January 1st, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 256 Comments

I started this blog on April 23rd of 2007, about 10 years ago (seems that long), and after over 55M hits, we are still going – yes I know it’s all very surprising.

Ed and Madeline Harrison
This shot was taken in High Heaton, Newcastle and yes the sun was shining!

We’d like to extend our best wishes to Newcastle fans everywhere,  and all the very best in 2012, and let’s hope at the end of the year the lads are doing really well – and we’re in Europe too!

With any luck we’ll still be around next year at this time – here’s hoping.

All the best Ed and family and many congrats for the dedication to the cause and fine blog.

We can all hope for a change in direction from our illustrious leader but I fear it’ll be wafer thin squad, SDA and SD shirt sponsors to look forward to.
The future’s bright at SJP but only because of all the tacky advertising now adorning our great stadium.

  • 15 GeordieToon89 // Jan 1, 2012 at 1:36 PM

Oh btw tht MSI Douglas talks some utter john pap..

    Sunday Sun:
Vertonghen Too Expensive then a few pages away it says a move for Vertonghen and Cissokho will be more likely to happen than raid the english market but the board room have been talkin about Chris Samba

Response in us getting in to europe

Do u think pardew realises for us to get ANYWHeRE in europe we wud need back up strikers, new wingers (jonas and obertan arent good enough to supply in the premier league never mind europe)
    And new full backs

Also pardew said “we have been to a few clubs to check prices” (when talking about selling players) so I guess man utd are buying tiote and cabaye , so for europe we only need a new striker (or 2)
Atleast 4 midfielders and a full back to replace simmo o and then we also need some defenders for depth

Well MA wheres the cash :P?

  • 20 Dannyo // Jan 1, 2012 at 1:57 PM

Hopefully Pardew says that cause MA is willing to give him a bit more than £8 million alone in spending power.
No one knows how much we have to spend outside the boardroom, included Carr and Carver.
I don’t see how this could get leaked?

  • 21 Jonny // Jan 1, 2012 at 1:57 PM

    Happy New Year Lads

I haven’t yet commented on the Liverpool game. But i think Tiote and Collocini were the best players for us on the night. Our wingers were woeful and as much as i like Jonas, he will only get 1 or 2 goals a season and Obertan will be lucky to get 1. Now surely 3 goals contributed from your wingers is not good enough.Go back in time to the likes of Solano, Robert, Ginola and many more, they were all getting at least 5 or 6 a season and that could be 10 more points. I seriously think that we need 2 wingers more than we need a centre half or centre forward. We are relying on Demba to much and the only other person on the pitch that can score is Cabaye or the man sitting on the bench, Ben Arfa. Vuckic looked over-weight to me and couldn’t keep up with the tempo.

Santon, Ben Arfa, Tiote, Ba, Krul and Cabaye. That is 6 Top class players that all need to be playing in my opinion if we are to score goals and win games.

Happy new year Ed all the best for you in 2012 🙂

  • 24 GeordieToon89 // Jan 1, 2012 at 2:21 PM

Dannyo – a dont get how it gets leaked because our board dont set budgets they do it deal by deal if the right deal comes along they would do it they dont go to pardew and say look youve got such and such they ask for a list of players presumably he would also identify positions he feels are essential then the board will try to get players for them positions, obviously being wise they aint going to be spending ridiculous amounts but thats where the understanding comes from because Carr will be indentifying the players Pardew will look and right them down sort of thing

  • 25 GeordieToon89 // Jan 1, 2012 at 2:26 PM

  • 29 Mancgeordie // Jan 1, 2012 at 2:31 PM

Geordietoon i agree pardew decides what positions are needed carr identifies 4-5 players who fit the bill then pards decides which 1-2 out of them he likes best then where the process seems to fall down is when llambass is suppose to strike a deal to bring in at least 1 of them in n finally fat mike approbes it n signs it off

Happy new year all the best for 2012 for you and your loved ones! Oh and keep up the good work this is the best on the web!!!

  • 37 Dannyo // Jan 1, 2012 at 2:39 PM

Ye, seems Llambas and Charnley is the ones taking up all the time to get the deals done. Obviously they want it at the lowest price possible, and that can take allot of time. There’s probably a million back and forths on one deal, possibly even so low you insult the counterpart.
If things go wrong, i expect it to be there. It’s not often we get the best deals possible, but it does happen, through players like Cabaye, Tiote and HBA.
If they’re free it tends to go quicker. Marveux was fast, so was Ba.
I don’t think it’s a matter of identifying targets, it’s more the part where we negotiate the various fees.

  • 38 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 1, 2012 at 2:43 PM

@danyo cant tell if ur having a pop at the board or like most of us bieng optamistic that we will see some new faces?!?!?!

  • 39 angelswithdirtyfaces // Jan 1, 2012 at 2:44 PM

19 games to play is max 57 pts. IF we get 28 that’s equal to another 8 wins 4 draws and 7 losses. Looking at the schedule while ACON s on we’ll be lucky to get a single win and a couple of draws as these sides are consolidating their form – Villa, Fulham, Spuds are all tough games – so we really do need to hit another spell of good form and some better luck to get anywhere near Europe.

The test of a good manager is how they do when the team is in a bad run. Up to know I’ve been surprised at how well Pardew has done but he needs to get us back to taking 50% points up for grabs to have a successful season. It’s a numbers game…

  • 40 angelswithdirtyfaces // Jan 1, 2012 at 2:47 PM

    know = now Sp

  • 41 Dannyo // Jan 1, 2012 at 2:49 PM

    Lol, a little of both?
We know we can be good at getting good deals, but trying for it too hard can also result to the fact that we shoot ourselves in the foot and get nothing from it.
Just trying to identify where our weakness in making signings are.
Tbh, i think we’ve all yet to question Pardews way of getting players.
Is he a Wenger type? Patient, values thoroughness in deals, not bothered with spending money?
Or does he actually want to remove several players and build from the ground up?
He has said we’re not getting the striker, it’s important to identify personality types, etc. etc, indicating that he’s a “Wenger type” manager when i comes to getting players.
He seems like a stubborn type and belives in his own ability quite allot.

  • 42 Mancgeordie // Jan 1, 2012 at 2:51 PM

I know its a long shot just hope ashley frees up 15-20m and llambias gets the players carr n pardew wants to give a chance of makin top 6-7

  • 43 Mancgeordie // Jan 1, 2012 at 2:56 PM

Toonmauritius what part of mauritius you from we have a house in prou d’or i think thats how its spelt? In the north we go every year for 10 years my father in law is mauritian only ever seen 1 toon fan though in the bird park

  • 44 alex84 // Jan 1, 2012 at 2:56 PM

Well I’m really happy with his the season has gone so far…But…I’m really worried about this window, its obvious we only pulled out of the maiga deal coz of saylor’ s injury and we only wanted to bring in one player…which ain’t good as its plain as day we need 2-3 more players, even Krul has said today we need a few extra bodies , plus the main worry is Tiote etc being sold.

  • 45 GeordieToon89 // Jan 1, 2012 at 2:57 PM

If we go out tomorrow and sign:
    Nathaniel Clyne
    Aly Cissokho
    Luuk De Jong
Jan Vertonghen or The Monperllier dude

Sign them and we will defo get into Europe this year and he’d make his money back..

could even add younger cheapies like:

    Jason Prior(if hes any good)
    Emmanuel Mayuka

Then when it comes to the summer time we wont need to sign as many players for our european challenge all we’ll need is:
To go along with our then tremendous squad and we’ll win a cup next year for sure

  • 46 whosyadaddy72 // Jan 1, 2012 at 3:07 PM

Happy new Year Ed! keep up the good work!

  • 47 t00ntime // Jan 1, 2012 at 3:16 PM

@toondownsouth I never said we were going to sell half our line up… u read worse then kingkev9

what I was pointing out was that if we did manage to qualify for europa we will have a much busier schedule so we wud need a bigger team and to get anywhere in europa we need some better players ( nothing dram queen about that just stating the obvious )

the point about us selling players… look at the earlier post from ed and read what pardew said:
”You never know – you just don’t know. You can’t predict it,” “We certainly haven’t done a deal yet. We’ve approached a couple of clubs for prices and that’s it.”

so you can see that there is a big chance people will be leaving if they have already checked for prices

the only 3 players I have heard of leaving are cabaye tiote and simpson but I have heard simpson wont be aloud to leave till the summer

so as you see i wasn’t being over dramatic I was using the process of elimination and this was the most logical

sorry if i was been to negative 😛 I’m actually quite optimistic about newcastle this year just I cant see us getting in to europa. going for 8th 😉

  • 55 Tinman // Jan 1, 2012 at 3:30 PM

Hey guys. I used to post on this blog quite a bit about 5 months ago, but in August i went to wrok in Botswana for a year and lost internet access.

Anyway. In Africa there is this lovely thing called DSTV, so i have watched every single Newcastle game except defeat to Blackburn in the cup.

The team looks good imo, Rtaylor was a constant liability but granted created a few goals. Should definately be Santon in that position if he is as good as i think he is. Collo has been outstanding in almost every single game and Stevie T was just starting to look good, winning everything in the air, which complimented Collo very well. Simmo is average at best, sometimes he looks okay, but his crossing is appalling. I have seen two games where Obertan looked unstoppable, the kid could be great, but at the moment he is far far too inconsistent. Cabaye is class, puts in a surprising amount of dirty work, doesnt shirk a challenge, can score and really pulls the strings, he is key to our season. Tiote has not looked like he did last season, still played well and definately a key player, hopefully playing for his country will help to get him some form back! Gutti has been poor for me, when i seen Marveaux he has always brought something different to the game, hopefully the lad can get fit and have a run in the team. Ben Arfa has looked shite for nearly every game i have seen, he shows serious skills, but t the moment seems to take on one too many guys, im not sure but i would try him at left wing instead of Gutti, just an idea. Ba has looked good, the guy always looks like he is going to score.

I work with a Dutch guy who LOVES football and knows a great deal about european leagues. He has watched most games with me and says Collo is our best player along with Ba, cant argue with that. He also shares the opinion that Obertan could be class, but no way will it be this season, maybe not even the next and at the moment he is a shadow in games. The guy supports Ajax, says there best player is Vertonghen, I have seen him play about 8 times, he looks very very good. Too good for us i fear. He reckons he will be at Arsenal or Man U next season. He also says Luuk de Jong is Hollands next big striker, but is still two years off his best. He wants him to stay in Holland for another season at least as he aint ready for the prem just yet, but he has lots of potential.

Anyway, just thought i would share 🙂

  • 56 Dannyo // Jan 1, 2012 at 3:31 PM

No mate, allot of Zambian people the last couple of days claiming that we had signed him and he’d be presented at the start of January.
I dunno what started that rumour, but i think that’s all it is mate, a rumour.

  • 57 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 1, 2012 at 3:34 PM

@danyo its hard to tell defo seems to like youth players and every manager inherits players they wouldnt normally buy so wouldnt be suprised to see players like simmo/loven and smith go as long as we got players in like clyne rhodes in to replace them dont mind be oatient and building a team with development platers but thats always a gamble
@toontime fair point mate ill admit i only scanned thru it just get fed up reading the same thing wen yge windows barely started! I understand the concerns but just have to keep faith that carr and co will always have some 1 lined up for worst case hopefully!!!

  • 58 alex84 // Jan 1, 2012 at 3:38 PM

Billy sharp 256 career apps 118 goals

  • 64 kingkev9 // Jan 1, 2012 at 3:44 PM

T00ntime- finally back on after stating some ‘facts’ about me a few days ago all of which were rubbish.

I dont rate Obertan at all, never have, would like to be proved wrong but doubt it. You slated me for this yet you have just said he isn’t good enough!?

I said I don’t boo players and you tried to say I did!? When have I? I cheered Shola being took off once! Yeah too right after watching him play for 11 years and I’m still waiting for a 50th league goal!! Luckiest man alive, never booed him though.

And finally you said that I had stated that Cabeye and Tiote wouldn’t work together. I am still to be convinced otherwise. I rate both of them highly but neither for me are creators and neither will get enough goals. Both good but ideal partnership? Not for me.

And as for trying to be clever when I said I know a good player when I see one hmmm, season ticket holder for over 20 years and can’t remember getting many judgements wrong.

If you are sad enough to go over months worth of posts to then make irrelevant comments you must have far too much time in your hands.

  • 65 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 1, 2012 at 3:45 PM

@ dannyo lots of my nates support championship teams and most of them cant believe he hasnt been signed by top flight maybe scouts dont think he could make tge step up

  • 66 Tinman // Jan 1, 2012 at 3:47 PM

As far as I’m concerned, we go out buy a defender and a winger and we will get 7th no problem. Take a look at the teams below us, Stoke (-4), Villa (-7), Norwich (-8), WBA (-8), Everton (-9), Fulham (-10). Which one of those teams is going to overtake us then?

We should go all out to buy Vertonghen and then look for a winger and striker (now or the summer), if the right deal comes.

  • 67 toon tom // Jan 1, 2012 at 3:47 PM

happy new year ed, and the same to all newcastle fans, all the best, howay the lads

  • 68 kingkev9 // Jan 1, 2012 at 3:49 PM

Davey – Billy sharp has done ok at smaller clubs but when he moved to Sheffield United (when they were nearer top of div 1) he really struggled. I’m not convinced he can make the step up. Same for Maynard. But a £1m or £2m gamble could be worth it.

What about Lambert from Southampton? Big, strong, similar to Holt who has done well. Rhodes looks a good prospect too.

  • 69 Tinman // Jan 1, 2012 at 3:50 PM

Oh and people who say even if we qualify for Europe we will just get knocked out, you cant win the raffle if you dont buy a ticket.

I for one would much rather be in Europe and get knocked out than not be in at all…

  • 70 toon tom // Jan 1, 2012 at 3:50 PM

  • 71 davybtoon // Jan 1, 2012 at 3:57 PM

toon tom – thats the problem here there fans who jus write off player as crap as soon as u say there from a lower league joke

  • 72 kingkev9 // Jan 1, 2012 at 3:59 PM

Davey- going back to a post earlier from you.

I hold my hands up about Long, he was excellent against us.

But I disagree about us replacing players with better players.

    Cabeye- excellent. Ba- superb.
The rest? Santon looks good but no one has seen enough of him. Same for Marveux.
    Abeid- future prospect.
Elliott- doesn’t look good enough. Obertan- not good enough.
For me only Ba and Cabaye have been proved as good buys.

We have desperately missed Jose. Barton would walk into our team on the right. And although he wouldn’t start every game Nolan would have been a better option in some games than Best, Shola, Lovenkrands

  • 73 Jail for Ashley // Jan 1, 2012 at 4:05 PM

I don’t think MA is prepared to invest enough to get us into and to sustain a europa league challenge, for a gambling man like Mike I don’t think the returns see high enough for the original stake, I’m convinced that he’s happy enough with the big money from sky, obviously the higher the better for placement money I don’t actually think he takes any pride from our acheivments just the bank balance

Nolan would get goals or create goals, even coming off the bench.

Marveaux and Santon look good but have hardly played unfortunately

  • 78 ochytoon // Jan 1, 2012 at 4:09 PM

  • 79 toon tom // Jan 1, 2012 at 4:10 PM

davybtoon, we have to look at the lower leagues, we are no man city and ashley will never spend big, so we have to find a few “gems” remember beardsley came from vancover whitecaps and waddle came from tow law

  • 80 t00ntime // Jan 1, 2012 at 4:10 PM

@kingkev9 for starters u say finally on all though am say something everyday…

I never said Obertan was good enough NOW, I said Obertan will be good enough in a season or 2. Before you say: so we have to have him as a starter for 2 seasons. NO like I keep saying Obertan is only covering for marveux, marveux has been 80% all season and then he got injured again but rest assured when he is 100% he will play over Obertan, and Obertan will make cameo’s.

I never said u booed players I said you made a post saying you cheer when Shola comes off, which is just as bad as booing.

As for the yet to be convinced over Cabaye and Tiote, well they put by sky and most papers as one of the best center midfield couples in the premier league, but hey what do they know. Also if they were that bad would Sir Alex Ferguson of praised them and said they looked great?

your a 20year long season ticket holder, thats nice and all but that doesnt mean you know how good a player can develop into does it? So I don’t understand what that has to do with anything.

You say I have too much time on my hands cause I went through soooo many pages… well we played arsenal on the 13th of August if I remember right, so you go to archives click on august and look for arsenal posts around that date… takes a whole of 2minutes…
then press ctrl + F and type in kingkev9 then u can find your posts in about 5/10 seconds…

So no time? It took a maximum of 10minutes…

I can’t remember why this started but what I do know is that Obertan is atm better then Jonas at going forward in terms of passes making it through etc so before we change Obertan we need to sort Jonas out. Thats simple enough put Santon on for Ryan and see if it improves Jonas’s attacking if it does problem solved and we can focus on Obertan

  • 88 kingkev9 // Jan 1, 2012 at 4:30 PM

Davey- Obertan has the pace but doesn’t have the vision, awful crossing and only has one trick, a stepover. Barton can’t beat a man but didbt need too. He has vision and can makes goals. He’s not a world beater but he’s far better than Obertan

  • 95 Dannyo // Jan 1, 2012 at 4:46 PM

Well, tbh, it’s a radio interview with a Daily Express journo, so it’s not talksport saying it really 😛

  • 96 Offkey // Jan 1, 2012 at 4:49 PM

Dannyo – True, but does that Journo have a good rep? One minute says ‘I think there after Samba’ then says ‘if I had to take a wild stab in the dark I think they are after Samba’. He also says they dont go for big names but then talks about Samba – one of the est defenders in the league imo….

  • 106 Ponderous Pardew // Jan 1, 2012 at 4:58 PM

There are a few solutions, for me. Stick with wingers and go with:

    Santon RB, Jonas RW
    Ferguson LB, Sammy LW

A classically balanced side, with wingers who can first and foremost go on the outside and deliver with their natural foot. That would provide much more quality service for Ba, in my opinion. Another alternative is:

    Santon RB Raylor RW
    Ferguson LB Jonas LW

There are other combinations too. AP just needs to be imaginative and recognise, that Ba is playing unbelievably, considering he’s getting hardly any service – imagine what he could do!

My personal preference would be to srap the wingers and see this:

I think Cabaye’s vision and eye for goal is being wasted playing deep, especially when Guthrie can do an identical job (we’ve missed Guthrie), and Cabaye, HBA and Ba could tune in great together, like they did against Man City for that special move.

Cabaye got 13 goals and 7 assists, playing 32 games in the 09-10 season with Lille.

The FBs can provide the natural width. I’m a huge fan of young Fergy, far more composed on the ball than Simpson and can skip past players for fun and deliver wicked crosses.

    We have options.

  • 107 Thump // Jan 1, 2012 at 5:01 PM

@Ponderous: 4-3-2-1 is a very risky formation mate. You’re left completely exposed in the wide areas and it doesn’t offer any serious attacking threat (unless you play possession football which we don’t). I’d like to see a 4-2-2-2 with the wide men playing right up the park. I honestly believe that could be the solution to Pardew’s love of 4-4-2.

  • 108 Dannyo // Jan 1, 2012 at 5:03 PM

Could also be that Ponderous wanted to play that formation since christmas lasts all the way to easter? 😛

  • 111 jimmymagpie // Jan 1, 2012 at 5:06 PM

Just been watching the mackems, and O’Neill gets the points back, thanks to a linesman, that Webb robbed him of on Monday against Everton. Only 9 points behind us now, and we all know that O’neill will get backed this month, while fatso sits on his wallet, and deadly Derek suns himself on holiday. Wolves have now done 2 deals already.

  • 112 Toonboy_84 // Jan 1, 2012 at 5:09 PM

If we get samba then I’ll give Mr Ashley 4 pork pies, a cornish pastie, a battered mars bar and reach around.

  • 113 Ponderous Pardew // Jan 1, 2012 at 5:11 PM

Thump, we have the players to play possession football, it’s just that you’re only as good as the weakest link, and often the the moves breakdown when Obertan gets the ball or, Simpson just knocks it up the line (which is what he actually should have done for their 3rd). Them 2 occupying that right flank, is a joke in my opinion, neither have a strong enough mentality and are easily worried into making errors.

Our best display of the season, in my opinion, was against Villa, despite it finshing 1-1, and that’s partly because Cabaye was getting into advanced positions, threading the ball through and rifling shots in from all angles, he was awesome that day.

  • 114 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 1, 2012 at 5:11 PM

  • 119 Ponderous Pardew // Jan 1, 2012 at 5:16 PM

I’m of the school of thought, that attacking and scaring the opponent is the best form of defence, if you hadn’t noticed 😉

I don’t think we’ve seen enough of him in that position, to make that call. And he can’t be as bad as Raylor, he’s basically invisible at LB. Anyway, I’d be hoping another FB/CB would be brought in, perhaps Onuoha. Him RB Santon LB would be great.

Toonarmy – I agree, but you have to be aware of these things to make them happen. With fatso’s obsession with cheapies on the continent, how much do are we aware of what is available in England, apart from the well publicised ones? I honestly think that Pardew himself is getting fed up – he only gets to talk to boss-eyed Derek via telephone conference call. We are the only club in the Premier League run by a Chief Exec from 300 miles away by remote control. The admin. is a shambles.

    toontime and king kev 9

i agree with king kev ,

    9. Gabriel Obertan
    Transfer fee paid: £3 million

    Transfer fee received: £3 million

United have had their fair share of Gallic icons over the years, with ‘Le King’ Eric Cantona at the top of the tree. Alas, French winger Gabriel Obertan, who joined the Reds in 2009 from Bordeaux, was destined not to become one of them. Although initially looking rather promising, it soon became clear that the only thing Obertan possessed was pace and nothing else. There was hardly ever any end product and his ability to cross the ball was terrible, way behind Nani, Antonio Valencia and Ji-Sung Park for positions on the flanks. However, Newcastle United were somehow persuaded to part with £3 million last summer for the Frenchman, and thus Ferguson managed to recoup the initial transfer fee outlaid.
    from this site

    read this also

    also read this

    13: Gabriel Obertan
Even his former manager Laurent Blanc appeared to question Ferguson’s decision to sign Bordeaux winger Obertan for £3m in 2009. “They certainly hope to advance him, something that Bordeaux and Lorient have failed to do,” he said at the time. In short, Obertan didn’t advance anything like United hoped and was sold to Newcastle in August.

I agree, Raylor is never a defender, I know he was still bedding in, but in our relegation year, he played RB in a lot of games and looked shabby there – his qualities are certainly more suited up field.

We have to get back on track, because the league is starting to concertina with all these whacky results.

  • 134 JackButler // Jan 1, 2012 at 5:49 PM

According to the Mirror Liverpool to offer 24mil for for Darren Bent, that#ll put Carrol even further down the pecking order. Well at least he’ll get plenty of time to count his money every week

  • 141 Toonboy_84 // Jan 1, 2012 at 6:09 PM

8mil is probably just paper nonsense. In reality it’s probably a fraction if that lol. In all seriousness I think we work from deal to deal rather than an x amount sum of money. No proof but that’s the way I see it.

So 8 mill over Jan? Fattys turning over a new leaf by not lying to us this year?!?

  • 145 JackButler // Jan 1, 2012 at 6:16 PM

The 90mil is from Premier League money and player sales only, add to that the revenue from ticket sale’s, merchandise sale’s, sponsorship and everything else and it equates to hell of a lot of more than the 90mil that we know about and if you take into account the relatively low wage bill we have and you get an idea of how much Ashley is making out of OUR club

  • 146 BelfastMagpie87 // Jan 1, 2012 at 6:22 PM

Happy New Year to everyone but especially to Ed and your lovely wife Madeline. Here’s hoping the owner truly does turn over a new leaf and starts dealing honestly with the supporters. Mid table for us by the end of February is my prediction unfortunately based on a lack of spending and the loss of Ba and Tiote to the ACoN.

  • 150 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 1, 2012 at 6:33 PM

To be honest dont care how much we spend as long as we get either a) players who u can see have bags of potential in ateas we need )b an experienced cb its not the quantity we spend its the quality we get £50 mil torres £35 mil carroll £1-4 mil big bad demba ba know who im happiest havin!!!

  • 151 GeordieTwo // Jan 1, 2012 at 6:44 PM

The quality of an incoming CB is of course related to what he would cost. No team is going to give us some kind of deal on their CB. If we want a good experienced CB we will have to pay a big fee and also a decent wage. Therefore we will not get a good experienced CB because Ashley doesn’t operate that way. Instead we will buy someone cheap and fairly young with some promise who will accept a low wage. That is the method that Ashley and Llambias have established to make us profitable to Ashley.

Agree DaveyBToon, for me Jonas and Obertan are not wingers. Wingers put crosses in, neither do. I think the only thing that helps Jonas out is his work rate and effort.

Sellars was a winger, Ginola and Robert were wingers. They could beat a man and cross.

  • 167 kingkev9 // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:21 PM

Davey- we are agreeing on things! Ha!

Hoillet would be great but Ashley won’t pay £5m for him when you could get him for free in July. Of course on a free Hoillet can pick and choose and in reality won’t choose us.

£10 for Samba and Hoillet? BR need money and it would show we mean business.

Tompkins is very questionable. Didn’t look great in the prem and haven’t seen anything brilliant this season.

I’d love someone experienced like Dunne. Near end of contract and career really but 2/3 years out of him would be great. He would compliment Colo. If not Bassong? Alex?

What about a bid for Chris Brunt? I think he’s a very good footballer and would be great for us

  • 172 davybtoon // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:26 PM

Kingkev Iol It’s my pet hate about us ATM our wingers being so poor it’s the reason were goin long ball again bcoz I don’t the rest of the team hav faith in the wingers

  • 173 GeordieTwo // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:28 PM

Dunne would be too expensive in wages kingkev9. I would look for someone from abroad, 25 or under or possibly Bassong on loan. Those are the type of cheap deals we are looking for as always.

  • 174 davybtoon // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:28 PM

Jb Ian wright weren’t found till he was about that age, n the kid record pretty good 95 in 120 if he can do it against colo n willo in training he would b worth try what u got to lose

  • 175 JackButler // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:30 PM

Apparently Bassong is a no go as there are issues between him and several players that stayed at the club, read it somewhere a week or two ago

  • 176 JackButler // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:31 PM

Douglas from FC Twente will be a good shout as he’s out of contract at the end of the season and is a beast of a centre half

  • 177 davybtoon // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:31 PM

Kno for a fact pardew loves samba was on sky proper bigging him up, samba would defo come aswell

  • 178 JackButler // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:33 PM

Ian Wright was 19 when he joined Palace If I remember right, but he’s worth a go no doubt about that

  • 179 davybtoon // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:34 PM

Douglas only 23 he would b my shout if we can’t get samba, also cianni from France big beast aswell

  • 180 WWJBD // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:36 PM

Why would Samba come to us? He can wait until the end of the season and move to Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool even Chelsea might be in for him all of them would offer more in wages

  • 181 GeordieTwo // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:37 PM

Just don’t believe the Samba quotes. He is 27 now i think and would want a big wage. His fee would be large as well so that means a large agent’s fee on top. We would never spend all that as our MD and owner add the wage and fee onto the player’s cost. That could bring it over 20M for Samba. Just not going to happen.

  • 182 davybtoon // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:38 PM

Jb when he’s in trial on if he can do it against our players then why not give him a year n a half deal get his strength n fitness up n u never kno n will cost nothin n I mean nothin it’s very low risk

  • 183 JackButler // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:38 PM

Douglas is the only player I’ve ever heard to get 3 red cards in one game. One for punching an opponent, one for pushing the ref after being shown the 1st red and one for refusing to leave the field.

He’s a big lad at 6’4” and now qualifies to represent Holland and is expected to play for them in the Euro’s

  • 184 Ponderous Pardew // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:41 PM

Samba’s contract doesn’t expire ’til 2015. No way we’ll get him with our budget.

  • 185 Offkey // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:42 PM

Ian Wright was 21/22 when he signed for Palace

  • 186 JackButler // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:43 PM

I agree mate, give the lad a go, we’ve got nothing to loose

  • 187 Ponderous Pardew // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:43 PM

And if Blackburn get relegated other teams will snap him up, that we openly cannot compete with, financially.

  • 188 JackButler // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:46 PM

If Blackburn have the finnalcial issues that are being reported, the I can see then cashing in on their big players like Hoilett and Samba, but I expect clubs with more money than us being the ones to make a move for them

  • 189 kingkev9 // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:47 PM

Davey- that’s exactly my thoughts and is a major reason behind Tiotes poorer form. Tiote is there to break up play and pass it to a team mate. He is getting no options from the wide men.

It’s sad but true that players like Samba and Dunne are out of our reach because of wages. Sad when we can’t compete with teams like Villa re wages

  • 190 Ben_BKK // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:47 PM

Happy new year to you and the family, Ed. I wish you all the best in 2012 and hope your health picks up. Love reading your blog, it’s the best place for NUFC news and comment so many thanks and hopefully you’ll have some good news to write about this year!

  • 191 Ponderous Pardew // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:52 PM

Hoillett is an all together different case. his contract expires in the summer and he’ll be on a relatively small wage. I’d love to test Blackburn’s resolve with a 5m bid. Onuoha is available for a reported 3m, he’d take our RB spot to the next level and is just as capable at CB. We must be at least considering him.

    Those 2 would be fantastic.

  • 192 Obafan // Jan 1, 2012 at 7:52 PM

Ed Is wish you and your family the best for 2012.

And also the best wishes for all the NUFCbloggers, who make it interesting visiting this blog daily ;-).

  • 193 GeordieTwo // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:00 PM

I could definitely see us trying for Hoillett (along with others) in the summer but I think we should test them now and jump on it quick. He would be so much better than Obertan (sad to say). Obertan could be used as cover. Jonas definitely needs some competition now as well. Maybe Fergie is ready? Let’s push some of our players more. We definitely need to strengthen the full back position and CB as well! It just isn’t all going to happen this window.

  • 194 Irie-Magpie // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:01 PM

Happy new year to you and the misses Ed and all members, let’s hope that we push on from here and make a real effort to finish higher than where we are right now.

  • 195 GeordieToon89 // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:02 PM

GeordieTwo – Well once Marveaux is back fit he will kick Jonas out the team straight away just need to keep him fit he’s much better than Jonas and Obertan

  • 196 davybtoon // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:05 PM

Anyone think we cud get aly cissohko n then move santon to right back will only cost 6/7mil him n Douglas
Santon Douglas colo cissohko some back four that like

  • 197 JackButler // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:05 PM

I’ve been saying for a while that Jonas’s performances have dropped off since Marveuax picked up his injury, no competition for places on either wing.
Pardew can’t think a lot of Fergie and Abeid and neither of them get a look in not matter how poor Obertan and Jonas are

  • 198 davybtoon // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:07 PM

If its true obertan is out we shud play sammi left Wing n jonas right wing

  • 199 JackButler // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:08 PM

Obertan is def out of the Man U game with a foot injury

  • 200 JackButler // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:09 PM

But Pardew will start Shola no doubt

  • 201 davybtoon // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:10 PM

Abeid ain’t a winger after all my arguing in the summer he was he’s not lol, but like u say we hav fergie n we shud giv moyo a shot

  • 202 JackButler // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:11 PM

Abeid is a winger but has been played as a defensive midfielder.
niafron when on a blog in france and confirmed that he has played as a winger

  • 203 GeordieTwo // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:11 PM

Yes we definitely have a choice to make for wingers against ManU with Obertan out. Lets see something different Pardew! We need more inspired play. Along with others I feel we really miss Marveaux now. He was just coming into his own then the serious injury. We have to push on now so let’s see what we have. Creativity will be crucial going forward and some new formations to play to whatever strengths we have with Ba and Tiote away.

  • 204 davybtoon // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:12 PM

We shud play this v man utd
    Santon willo colo fergie
    Tiote cabaye
    Jonas vukic hba

  • 205 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:15 PM

    Scott sinclair??

  • 206 GeordieTwo // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:16 PM

Yes I had been thinking about 4-2-3-1 as well mate. That’s not a bad lineup. Maybe switch Vuckic and Ben Arfa around or try Fergie on left wing but with the same formation and bring in Vuckic in the second half if someone tires.

  • 207 WWJBD // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:18 PM

Anyone know when Guthrie is back? Gosling is avaliable again after his red I can see him starting instead of Obertan if its not Sammy. HBA wont play winger

I’d play Ba and Best (Utd have issues at the back and Best needs games before Ba heads off for warmer climates) Santon in for Raylor is surely going to happen. Vuckic imo was way out of his depth against Liverpool so wouldnt give him another start against a top level team.

HBA well he is a impact sub atm

  • 208 catchy in norway // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:19 PM

    joey barton

  • 209 nufc90 // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:20 PM

anyone heard anything else on mayuka or whatever he’s called? was it just rumour or have we actually got him?

  • 210 GeordieToon89 // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:24 PM

Abeid is a winger, He played RW for Lens youth and scored 20 odd goals in as many games oh and he played RW for us when he first came then in the cup he played CM

  • 211 davybtoon // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:25 PM

Just a rumour at the minute, French press claim we want Michael ciani

  • 212 davybtoon // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:27 PM

Ciani for ppl who don’t kno 27year old cb in the samba mold

  • 213 davybtoon // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:27 PM

    Ie he’s a big beast

  • 214 GeordieTwo // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:30 PM

Guthrie’s injury put in out for at least 6 weeks WWJBD so I think he has a couple of weeks to go at least. Yes I think Gosling has a chance to be back in the lineup as well. He needs playing time to improve but it will be tough against ManU. If we go Ba/Best it will be 4-4-2 again. I think Jonas will be in for his work rate so maybe Sammy on the rate as Pardew seems to rate him. Not sure it will work but it will be tough with ManU having lost to Blackburn.

  • 215 GeordieTwo // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:32 PM

Sorry that should say Sammy on the right.

  • 216 WWJBD // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:42 PM

Aye I remember it being 6 weeks but I cant recall when he got injured maybe he will be back to cover for Tiote being away?

I would agree that the 442 line up with Best and Sammy starting is probably most likely against Utd

  • 217 nufc90 // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:46 PM

ah right i haven’t seen much of ciani but as long as carr recommends him i’m happy to trust him. i know carr watched a lot of bordeaux last year.

also i was thinking the other day, marvin martin has hardly hit the heights he did last season this year in ligue 1. may be worth a cheeky bid from us, although obviously there are more pressing areas needed to be strengthened

  • 218 mattyNUFC // Jan 1, 2012 at 8:49 PM

happy new year to you, Ed. We’d clearly be left astray if you were to leave us any time too soon. Best of luck with your recovery. I think you’ve already entered in your own bit of lore into Newcastle’s illustrious history!

  • 220 mattyNUFC // Jan 1, 2012 at 9:09 PM

    that’s optimistic davyb!

the sad thing is i look at these windows not as counting down the days of who we might be getting, but how worse off we’ll be in the aftermath.

Time’s proven we don’t miss anyone really but JE from the past 12 months’ departures, but I feel like we’re riding a VERY thin line. None of our signings have so far managed to shine.

    hoping for the best.

I hate the jan window players r over valued n really arnt worth the prices quoted
Think the transfer window shud only be open from day season finishes until aweek b4 the season starts n that shud b it for the season n if u can’t do ya business in that time well it’s your fault

  • 223 BelfastMagpie87 // Jan 1, 2012 at 9:20 PM

How about playing Jonas on the right for a change????

Play Sammy Ameobi/Shane Ferguson on the left??

Wednesday nyts a free one In my opinion.
What ever we get from that game will be a bonus.

Especially after that lot getting beat yesterday ffs….

  • 224 mattyNUFC // Jan 1, 2012 at 9:31 PM

i agree belfast, with the way we’ve been playing anything other than a loss is unexpected.

I’m not so sure how fergie’s dropped so far down the pecking order…know he was injured. has it been quoted that pards will not play him on the wing? think everyone on here agrees he’s going to be a better winger than a left back….the kid is tiny

  • 225 Mancgeordie // Jan 1, 2012 at 9:31 PM

  • 228 BelfastMagpie87 // Jan 1, 2012 at 9:40 PM

Think I read somewhere Ferguson kept picking up Minor injuries after he got fit again??

Thats probably why we haven’t seen that much of him.

I always thought the mackems would pick up once O’neil took over.Still think we’ll finish above them but. 🙂

O’neil will get money to spend in the window & Pardew probably wont get a penny ffs..

  • 229 Oleg G // Jan 1, 2012 at 9:41 PM

I knew we are doing bad, but this is horrible.

How many points each team collected in their last 8 games?

    Man U 19
    Spurs 17
    Arsenal 17
    Liverpool 15
    Man C 14
    Stoke 14
    Everton 14
    Chelsea 12
    WBA 11
    Sunderland 11
    Fulham 10
    Wigan 10
    Norwich 9
    A. Villa 8
    Blackburn 8
    Swansea 7
    Newcastle 5
    Wolves 5
    QPR 5
    Bolton 4

Look where we are and except Chelsea (still much better then us) look where the other teams from the top 9.

Horrible. This started so well. Worse than the points, the performance. And now without Ba and Tiote. Hope we will manage somehow. Good luck to us.

  • 230 Mancgeordie // Jan 1, 2012 at 9:55 PM

The main difference i can see between now and at the start of the season is we was much more attackin and creative maybe its a confidence hopefully we will sign a couple of players and that can give us the lift we need

  • 231 yi jeff // Jan 1, 2012 at 9:57 PM

First time poster here! I’ve read this blog for about three years now and it’s very addictive! As a Geordie living in exile in Oxford I log on many times a day and it’s a great way of keeping up to date with Toon news – nowt better really (with the greatest respect to wor lass).

Im more than happy at were we are at the moment.
30 Points at the half way point.Never expected that like.

It’s just frustrating that fat boy probably wont spend any money in January so we can stay were we are.

It’ll be a hard second half of the season with the current squad.Injuries, african nations etc etc…

  • 236 Jail for Ashley // Jan 1, 2012 at 10:26 PM

I know its frustrating but we trained that week to play against eleven men, I think the goal that would have been scored would have been good enough, but until they introduce video refereeing there will always be bad decisions made, and even then the odd one will slip through.

  • 237 Chinzaknuk // Jan 1, 2012 at 10:37 PM

Well half way thru and i think we all can realistically say that we’re in a better position than we could have hoped for at the start ……….and with a bit of better luck with injuries we could have done even better….big up to AP and the lads for me.
I’ve just one bit of a gripe and that’s when we come up against the teams that are supposed to be better than us, then we seem to put out a team that is intent on supressing the opposition as opposed to putting out our best team that plays the in the way that has done us proud so far. The team against Liverpool was wrong for me…Vuckic is a great hope for me but he was put in a postion that was out of his depth and i think he unsettled some of his team mates too. It should have been Best or Ben Arfa, play to our strengths, play the way that has been sucesful for us so far…..we’ve lost against Man C, Chelsea and Liverpool by playing against the way that has been successful for us…. i just hope we go with a postive team against Man U and even if we loose we can say we gave it our best….i don’t think we can really say that about some of our recent games
