Pardew Gets £8M To Spend – Tomkins A Target – Vertonghen Too Expensive

It’s hardly a surprise that Alan Pardew will have to bring in new players this month on a tight budget.

James Tomkins – would be great buy for Newcastle

That’s the way of Newcastle these days, but int truth it hasn’t seemed to stop the club getting some very good players into the club, even though we have not spent a lot of money in the transfer market.

And as we’ve said before, just as long as Newcastle keep recruiting good players, even though we may not have even heard of them when they are signed, that’s okay with us.

The Sunday Sun is reporting today that Alan Pardew has been given a transfer  budget of around £8M for January, and that’s not too bad, given how tight Mike Ashley is with money in general.

And with that kind of money Alan could bring in around six new players. 😀

And though we were linked with Montpellier defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa in the Daily Star this morning, the local Sunday newspaper is reporting  that Newcastle are still interested in West Ham’s  22 year-old James Tomkins, who would be a terrific buy for the club.

And it’s not surprising that the reports are also that Jan Vertonghen of Ajax is too expensive, as we said recently that Newcastle may have to go as high as £10M for the player Graham Carr has presumably been recommending.

The Sunday Sun is saying that Newcastle will hold a transfer summit once Derek Llambias returns from his vacation, and may put in a higher bid for Tomkins, higher than the £2.5M bid that was turned down for the player recently.

We need to bring in a top defender, and the sooner the better, and we’d also like to see another striker recruited this month.

If Newcastle can get another good striker in, then Leon Best could even join Peter Lovenkrands in leaving the club in the summer.

What do you think?

There’s no way anyone knows what the budget is even If it was low can still bring in quality, the likes of billy sharp, Jordan Rhodes n Emmanuel Mayuka, nicky Maynard all worth punts up front, then u got the likes of clynne, Douglas, cianni, Tomkins

The best bit of business we could hope for this window is Ashley selling up to a real billionaire

Well, suprise su-fking-prise, Transfer window opens, and we cant do anything because Lambiarse is ‘on vacation’. Does this guy spend ANY time at all at Newcastle??? Or only at times when no money can be spent. So we wait till he returns, then hold a ‘transfer fking sumit’ and then start ‘making offers’. By that time all the bargains (if there were any) are gone, and we end up with no one, or worse still, two to three passengers who have no business playing prem. football. Happy new year!

I don’t know how accurate the Sunday sun is, I think the club deserve a chance to bring players in before criticising them. The club did very well in the summer and are looking strong both on and off the field. I don’t know about you, but I honestly think we are on the right tracks for progress now. A year ago I was totally against the owners and their policies, now I’m not too sure.

So we get another striker in & the first thing you think of is that Best can leave… why Best & NOT Strola??? Best is far better than Strola, he actually looks like a striker & not a spare flag pole which Strola pretends to be n most game…

If £8m is what we have, then I think we could get Tomkins for £4m & then spend £4m on a striker, maybe Yakubu from the Toffee’s, they’re desperate for money.. lol

Yeah the sun could be full of sh1t, but as roshan says, lambias does always seem to be away when the window opens. They HATE spending money, we know that, and these delay tactics, as i see them, always see us missing out. I’d bet Lambiarse has also got his summer hols booked in too: Start of July to middle of August, leaving us 2 weeks to panic buy 😀

Why would they come up with a figure of only £8 million?

We all know (Cos lamearse told us) “a substantial portion” of the AC £35 million was being kept back for this window, “in case we needed to bring in players” I think he said.

Having only spent less than ONE MILLION NETT during the summer window, there is a huge sum of money available for transfers. Yes, I realise we spent squillions on some plumbing and Agents Fees, but not more than say £10 million!!!

Then, didn’t MA say he was very happy putting in around £20 million a year to strengthen the club? Yes, I know that was before we pissed him off by discovering what a lieing scumbag he really was, but, that’s what he said!!

So, only £8 million eh?? Somebody is being economical with the reality of the situation me thinks!!

My only concern is that we were supposed to bring players in at the start of the window, I believe that’s what pardew said. Not sure if that was just for the maiga deal which broke down or for a defender too.

Greame @ 12 – Forget about the £20 that Ashley said he would put into the club each season, that idea went out the window when he found out the clubs owed over a £100m in debts…

As for the £35m from Carroll, yeah we spents soem of it on the undersoil heating, borehole drilling & other things like agents fee’s & signing on fee’s but I also think that Ashley took out the remainer of the moneys owed to him from the £28m he put into the club while we were in the fizzy too, I know the accounts say he took out £16m last summer & another £12 was due at the end of August but maybe he took it out of the Carroll money instead & thats why there’s only £8m left??? who knows 🙁

More than likely meaning 1 defender only.
    Pathetic.
Unless we can conclude a deal for Tiote to manure for £20M in which case we can increase our budget to £10M.
    Woo Hooo Get in.

To answer a number of points above – the local press know that Pardew has a budget of £8m to spend on 1 player becaused he briefed them off the record after his press conference last week. And, don’t forget that the budget, in true Ashley style, includes agent’s fees, etc, so transfer fee nearer £5m. No, Lambsarse isn’t based up here, but runs the club by remote control from London, because he’s not f-cking interested! He’s on holiday now, probably the only Premier League Chief Exec on holiday as the window opens. Wolves have done their first bit of business already. I just don’t know what it takes to get through to some of you, probably the day they have us playing as Sports Direct Athletic in RED/WHITE STRIPES and blue shorts!

Lew – as above, Pardew has already the press that it is 1 player only, and only if he gets the player he wants, so we’ll probably finish up with nobody. The only players available in the price range we’re talking about are the likes of Onuoha and Ridgewell.

Jimmymagpie, I think we will be keeping “Sports Direct Arena” on a permanent basis and said so when the name change first came in.

That we will have “Sports Direct” all over the kit is an almost certainty.

As I asked in another post – Just how much is the global exposure enjoyed by Sports Direct actually worth? I would say that over the last four years (and counting) the £150 million he has paid for the club and all the “extras” is a very cheap sum for what he has had back.

I think the £8M budget wont be too accurate Mike isnt going to just give us that to spend, if Pardew or Carr can give names of players that will actually make a difference then I guess Mike will try and get them. Obviously no one too expensive.

According to SSN they rekon that Cheik Tiote is set to leave in this window. The only way he will leave IMO is if Mike gets a bid that is too high to turn down which in my oppinion is something like £20M. Appart from loan deals for various youngsters I wouldnt want to see anybody leave in this window, well not permanently anyway… Not even Perch!

Surely the transfer ‘summit’ should’ve been conducted in readiness for the opening of the transfer window? More amateur antics from the so called managing director. I know of no other businessmen that would take off on holiday at one of the most critical periods for their ‘company’. The manager, team, groundsmen, fans etc are all doing their job, so why isn’t senior management?

Rotunda, He will get the loan back when he sells the club, or will take it back when he feels the club can afford it. I was only thinking of the money he has actually spent.

But, if you add the £130 million “loan” to the £150 million purchase price (£280 Million) and divide it by the 5 years he’s owned the club, plus the next 2 years of “Free Advertising” that gives a figure of £40 million a year.

Would you or I be able to buy the same amount of Advertising and global exposure Sports Direct has/ is enjoying for a similar sum? I don’t know, I’m not a marketing boffin.

In every future year he owns the club, his “Yearly Spend” reduces yet his exposure grows to the point where his “Total Cost” is surpassed by his benefit. IE the club will have cost him nothing at all, he will have recouped it in “Free” advertising.

Any marketing “Guru’s” out there who can shed some light lol???

Well lads, here we go again! Signings??????? Aint going to happen! Eveeryone has the right to their own opinion and I firmly believe that Ashley bought our club with one aim in mind and that is to put his company in the shop window of the world. At first he thought buying the club would be fun but soon realised that it needed a large injection of funds to stabalise the club! Once stabalised with a minimum investment on players to keep it in the Prem, he now has a stable advertising platform that will make money for him. From a business point of view, he doesn’t need to spend or push the club to the next level! That would require him to spend and as a business man, he simply doesn’t need to spend millions on players! His plan will be to keep the club in the Prem with the minimum cost and thats it! To those of yu who are happy and with the club being financially secure and just ‘ambling along’ and are content with this great club just making up the numbers then fine, thats upto you. Mediocrity………get use to it and as for signing the players that we need to push us onto the next level and challenge for honours………Sorry but it aint going to happen as it will simply cost too much!

Whatever we think of Ashley, he has used his money to pay those charlatans millions! And they took out millions before that as well !

Davey, hold my hands up about Long, got that wrong, he was excellent against us. But I disagree about all of our signings being good and better than what we sold.

    Cabeye- excellent.
    Ba- superb.

The rest? Santon looks good but no one has seen enough of him. Same for Marveux.
    Abeid- future prospect.
    Elliott- doesn’t look good enough.
    Obertan- not good enough.

For me only Ba and Cabaye have been proved as good buys.

We have desperately missed Jose. Barton would walk into our team on the right. And although he wouldn’t start every game Nolan would have been a better option in some games than Best, Shola, Lovenkrands
