The player who ultimately was responsible for Newcastle losing at Anfield on Friday night, Steven Gerrard, has come out today and been quite complimentary about Newcastle’s team this season.
Steven Gerrard – scores Liverpool’s third on Friday night
Newcastle go up against Manchester United on Wednesday evening, and if Sunderland can beat Manchester City at home, however lucky they were at the Stadium of Light yesterday, then Newcastle can beat the Red Devils on Wednesday evening, for the first time since 2001.
Gerrard, who showed his undoubted class on Friday night in a 30 minute cameo appearance for the Reds, had this to say about Newcastle today:
“I think most people would go along with the suggestion that Newcastle have been the league’s surprise package so far.”
“They went unbeaten in the first 11 games and it was only ended by Manchester City away from home.” “Even though they lost at Man City they performed well and could have been ahead.”
“They then went to Man United and drew 1-1 after going a goal down – it shows they aren’t intimidated, no matter who or where they play.”
“They’ve spent most of the first half of the season in and around the top four – which tells you they must be a good side who do a lot of things right.”
“Alan Pardew has the players well organised and they defend strongly.” “It’s not easy to break them down.”
“They’re very good at getting bodies in the way and their goalkeeper Tim Krul has also been playing well.”
“They’ve got one of the in-form strikers in Demba Ba. We know all about him after he played against us for West Ham and scored.”
Steven is the player England need in the Euro 2012 this summer, and he’s one of the few England stars who don’t wilt when the games are big, as he showed by scoring a nice goal after only 4 minutes against the USA in the World Cup in South Africa eighteen months ago.
And we don’t think England will miss Rooney at all in the first two games of the Euro 2012 in the summer, and we were surprised there was so much fuss made, when he was initially banned for three games for stupidly getting himself sent off against Montenegro.
We though that could even have been a blessing in disguise for England, and don’t forget Wayne also managed to get himself sent off in the 2006 World Cup quarter final against Portugal.
And at the time the England press blamed his then team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo – typical of the England press to blame somebody else for England’s problems.
Wayne seems to be a liability in a big tournament, and when was the last time Wayne had a good game for England in a big tournament, when it really mattered?
Certainly in the last World Cup he was simply hopeless, and nowhere near the form he is capable of, and we have to hope he shows that same poor form in a couple of days time against Newcastle at St. James’ Park.
It’s going to be a tough game on Wednesday night, no doubt about that, but if Blackburn can beat the Red Devils at Old Trafford, and on merit too, then it shows on any given day any Premier League side can beat any other.
And Newcastle need another win as soon as possible, to keep up there with the big boys, so that’s not beyond what the lads can do on Wednesday night.

Comment #1Ugh just what we need – patronising comments from Gerrard. Still cant believe how easily Liverpool cut through our defence to score the 3rd goal

Comment #2We were good at the start of the season, we’ve had a bad spell and need to string some wins back together. Let’s hope we can get one or two transfers in early, our squad is paper thin, hence recent results.

Pardew has identified that a defender needs to come in, but I think your right, it will probably be near to the end of the window. Not too sure if he’s going to bring a striker in though.

Comment #8WWJBD, I agree about Gerrard and thought it funny how Pardew was watching him get ready to come on Friday evening, he should have had a word in his ear like “fancy a new challenge Steve?” lol
Can’t agree about lampard, biggest waste of space in an England shirt but does ok (or did) for his club team.

Overrated? Maybe, especially these days. Disappointing on the big stage? Hardly; he has a habit of scoring in cup finals. He single-handedly dragged Liverpool to victory in the ’05 Champions League final, for example.

Comment #13Over-rated? Gerrard has been virtually playing us on his own for years. Every single time he plays against the Toon, he murders us. Great player, make no mistake.
