There doesn’t seem to be much movement by Newcastle in the transfer market so far.
James Tomkins – still a Newcastle target
But we understand nothing much will happen until the meeting this week with Derek LLambias, manager Alan Pardew, Secretary Lee Charnley and Chief Scout Graham Carr takes place, to better identify their strategy during this January window.
The news is that both Derek Llambias and Lee Charnley have returned from their short Christmas breaks, and Newcastle are already being inundated by agents with central defenders, as they know Newcastle need to sign a top center-back this month.
The Journal is reporting this morning that Young Boys Zambian striker Emmanuel Mayuka, Bordeaux’s Michael Ciani and Manchester City’s Nedum Onuoha are not now Newcastle targets.
It appears that West Ham’s James Tomkins is still a target, and that Newcastle may go back to West Ham with an improved offer, after being turned down with their initial bid of around £2.5M a couple of weeks ago.
And Newcastle will not look at doing any loan deals in January, and that’s hardly surprising after last year’s loan deal of Aston Villa’s Stephen Ireland, which turned out to be an absolute disaster.
Stephen was signed on January 31st when he was still injured, and after some weeks recovering he made two short sub appearances, and then was injured again in training, and sent back to Villa.
Stephen scored one of the goals that had Villa beating Chelsea 3-2 over the weekend, with two late Villa goals, but he’s only just forced his way into the side, under new manager Alex McLeish.
But after that excellent win by the Villa, they managed to lose at home to Swansea 2-0 yesterday, and they are now in 12th place with 23 points.
Why did Alex McLeish ever get that job?
James Tomkins has changed his agent, and the feeling within the club is that could help Newcastle, and the 22 year-old is also in the process of negotiating a new deal with West Ham, and we know manager Sam Allardyce doesn’t want to lose him.
West Ham are looking for a big offer before they will sell the 6’3″ England U21 International defender, but we just cannot see that coming from Mike Ashley.
We think maybe £5M is the biggest bid Newcastle would ever make for Tomkins, and that will not be big enough to tempt West Ham to sell.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Comment #4I would personally love to see Tomkins at the club, with colo’s contract signing still being drawn out who is to say he won’t leave in 2012, Build a strong CB pairing between him and Taylor in the future, I just doubt Ashley’s willingness to invest! Would also love to see Onuoha as he provides cover for both centre and full back positions!

Comment #5Yeah sounds about right Ed, supporting Newcastle is probably the most frustrating fekking thing in the world….
Just look at the weekend results, i will put my whole fekking life up for sale and say that NUFC will not achieve a result like Villa did, or like the Scum have,
We are going to loose against Manure ( thats a Given ) and my prediction is a free fall for the rest of the season, with Scumberland finishing above us ( they have probably the best Manager of a “smaller” team in the WORLD, aka Martin O’Neill ) which makes my fekking blood boil
When will this curse be lifted off SJP?? Oh fekk sorry…i meant the Sports direct arena FFS

Comment #6The bottom line is nobody has a clue who we are after, including NUFC!!
Once we have the secret squirrel meeting between the Scouts, the Manager, the MD, the Tea Lady, to define our objectives in this window, we should be ready to swoop on out targets by around mid March.
Surely the targets were defined two days after it was confirmed S Taylor was out for the season – we already knew we needed a Central Defender 6 months before he was hurt. That of course was in addition to the Striker we have been waiting a year to see!!
Happy days at NUFC lol

Comment #7No loan moves?? So let me get this right then, we are missing Taylor ( The rock ) we will be missing Ba, and Tiote ( Chelski, or Liverfool bound, and Afcon ) We have McLoven and Strolla, Both can’t hit the broadside of a barn, we have no central defensive cover, Simpson is rubbish, Obertan is rubbish as well as Jonas is rubbish, to be perfectly honest ( Only God Knows how he ever made the Argentinian Team, alongside the likes of Tevez,Messi,De Maria etc etc ) well done Mike and Derrick, keep telling yourselves that you know how to run a football club FFS, both are fat fekking wank@#s

Couldnt agree more there mate, Newcastle is in a shambles, but the lucky/great start to the season has clouded peoples judgments, as well as their vision!!! Mark my words Lads, we will have the lowest ever finish for a team with that start after 11 games, the lowest ever i think was twelfth, and only twice has a team with that start finished outside the top 10, this will be the third
Thanks Mike, we fekking Love you, you fat F@#$

Comment #9Shouldn’t that meeting have taken place weeks ago??
Our board are ridiculous when it comes to transfers, we’ve literally needed a striker since the 2010 summer transfer window (at the time to take the pressure off carroll, now its Ba). We NEED 3 players! We’re absolutely desperate for a centrehalf, preferrably one that can cover left back, We need a striker that will compliment Ba and we need a right winger to give some competition to Obertan (can see Marveaux being out full time left winger, his end product is much better than jonas). A dream window would see us sign Samba, Hoilett and Sow, however it wouldn’t shock me if we only signed James Tompkins!

Comment #10Which part of him is the top centre half? When Cashley said, we gonna buy a top defender, Im sorry, but I was thinking about a Verthongen or Samba, but it looks like i had good faith about that…. so we wont buy a striker because we have to spend for Tomkins.

Comment #15The only times I have seen Tomkins play, he has been the ”Bramble of the South.” Always a costly error in him. As mentioned several times, Tomkins made Best (hardly premiership class himself) look like Messi. Really can’t see the attraction there.
If Smith goes out and M’Biwa or Douglas come in, that would be a great start. More likely if not Tomkins, then a journeyman like Ridgwell though.
No doubt after tomorrow night we can all again reflect on why:-
1) We play ”hoof ball” when we have some really good technical ball players ?
2) Why we are so ultra – conservative (1 shot v Liverpool?)
3) Why do we play people out of position ?
4) Why do we play certain ”Pardew favouites” over our better players?
5) Why do we make the wrong subs and always leave it so late in the game?
Then again we may all be very pleasantly surprised. Hmmmm……….

Correct me if im wrong here Lads, but as far as i can see, and know, Nedham is the closest thing to Micah Richards, i mean if there was even the remotest chance of getting such a player, WHY ON GOD’S GREEN EARTH WOULD WE NOT GO FOR HIM?????? FFS, what a crappy year 2012 promises to be, i dont know if i even want to watch football anymore, no point really

Agree ref Pardew, do not understand why as you have the option of 4,5,1 or 4,3,3 both offering cover for the RB and LB which to be fair we shouldn’t need under Santon and LB but Abied could offer Simpson some cover.

Comment #27Bloody hell, I used to get dog’s abuse on here for telling it as it is, but I’m well down the pecking order now. Welcome to those who have finally woken up to how our club is being run by remote control from London, by individuals only interested in the finance for their own ends, and not the clubs’. I expect a lot more will be joining us realists on 1st Feb when the window closes, and all we’ve done is bring in a 2nd rate defender, IF THAT. I’ve watched Tomkins a few times – what is our cclub’s obsession with short ar-ed, less than physical defenders who can’t defend balls across their own area in the air – Simpson, Perch, Willo who can’t jump, Raylor, even Colo, because that is the weakest part of his game. What’s wrong with a bloody big man mountain like Samba? Apart from the fact of course that Fatso won’t pay the price.

agree, you only get what you pay for in most instances, we have has a few exceptions with Cabaye, Tiote, Abied and Demba. Samba would have been the one for me, he has absolutely been one fo their outstanding performers and jesus £7/8m AND EVEN HIS WAGES would have been a drop in the ocean compared to what you would get out of him.
Rotonda, I have seen Abied play a few times now including in France and I rate him highly, not sure why he hasn’t figured yet.
