Newcastle Linked With England U21 Striker

There are reports that Newcastle may be interested in highly-rated Watford striker Marvin Sordell.

Marvin Sordell – Watford and England U21 striker

There seems to be a number of clubs such as Newcastle, Bolton and Blackburn all being interested in the 20-year-old England U21 striker, and a separate report that Swansea are about to put in a bid for the player.

The Harrow-born striker has hit 27 goals for Watford in 85 appearances, since making his debut for the club in August of 2009 in the Championship, in the 2–0 away defeat against Sheffield United.

In the 2009-2010 season he was briefly loaned out to Tranmere Rovers where he played 8 games and scored one goal.

Sordell has scored 9 goals in 24 appearances for Watford this season, and his club are struggling in the Championship in 18th position with 30 points, just 6 points above the drop zone.

The 5’10” striker made his international debut for the England under-20 side, scoring England’s goal in a 2–1 defeat to France last year, and he also scored in his England Under 21 debut against Israel in September of last year.

Watford may be forced into selling the player because of their poor financial position, and Newcastle may be able to get a good deal for the player.

Sordell has great technique and he certainly looks the part, and he has a good record of scoring in the Championship, and has so far made 6 appearances for the England U21 side with 2 goals.

And at least Alan Pardew told reporters after the 2-1 Blackburn win yesterday that Newcastle were making progress in the transfer market, but Alan couldn’t talk about the Magpies’ targets.

Spoilsport. 😀

I think its all in the negotiation, say if it is true that there’s a ten million clause and Ba’s on 40K a week, maybe he wanted 60K a week for a 20M clause and MA thought well your free anyway no matter what happens thats a 10M profit either way for a 40K a week striker

If Rooney, Lampard or Gerrard had scored that goal they’d be better than Mesi in the presses eyes

    Ross,

I gotta agree with ya. I believe we will see Benny go on a goal explosion, cause Ba is gone! He has too, if he wants a slot in the starting 11.

You beat me to it, and I feel you may be on the right track, he came to us as a free only because he apparently had a relegation clause.

But if you take that at face value and look at his apparent value at the time of signing something around the 6 to 8 mil mark, then a 10 mil release clause is prob fair.

But as someone else pointed out on this blog it still makes a bit of a biggish gamble for any club coming in for him, ten mil to trigger the clause then an improvement in his money to tempt him to move so say 3 to 6 mil and all this with a potential explosive knee. So 16 mil for a player who could be on crutches tomorrow.

He has had several transfers fall through because of the knee problem it is not something that is going to go away, by all accounts it is to do with a previously busted knee that was pinned together and when they took the pin out they damaged some bearing surface. Ba has discomfort in the knee from the nerves in the bearing surface but it could apparently degenerate into crippling pain at any time and basically end his career.

So how about not jumping the gun and calling club names when it all sounds quite sensible, if he is as reported on performance pay with bonuses and extras if his knee blows he is down onto maintenance pay unlike Smith and Owen I call that good business.

I remember when he was signed there were plenty on here slagging the board for desperately grabbing at freebee’s to replace the great AC and slagging Ba for being a freebee, those same people on here are now slagging the club for only valuing BA at a mere 10 mil for his get out clause.

God you are bellends and morons one minute he is not good enough to play for NUFC and now you are crying because a more successful club might come along and pinch him.

It’s all well and good being linked with these strikers but how will they cope against Premiership defenders. It’s true Rhodes scored 5 against Wycombe but the truth is the defence was awful.

Stepping up to the PL is a massive jump which is probably why there have been no firm offers from any PL clubs.

Ba’s knee may be an accident waiting to happen however what is a 30 goal a year striker worth in todays climate and what salary can a player of that stature demand for those services.

One thing I’ll guarantee is that Newcastle will not pay more than £60 K a week to retain his services and given that his agent will very likely be trying to broker a new deal with either NUFC or another club which could efectively double his salary in addition to giving him him a lump sum from the transfer fee, I’d be very surprised to see him at the club next summer.

There are also reports on Sky Sports that Man Utd are preparing a £20M bid for Tiote so it’s very likely that we’ll lose him too.

The positive side is that club debt and outgoings as a result of the last 12 months will have been reduced by £80M, (this takes into account the salaries of the players who have left), however the bad news is we have yet to see Ashley re-invest the money in terms of established quality players.

I ot sure how the next twelve months will pan out however if I was Man Utd, Chelsea or Arsenal my next signing would Tim Krull followed by Graham Carr

Cupid @ 22 besides the bell end /moron comment I’d agree with all that. Harsh but fair.

The set of facts on which ba was signed 6 months ago is different to now. And transfers like any deal could cover any contingency but they’d be royally expensive on a case by case basis, which collectively adds up to less resources/players for the team.

The flip side is smithy. You can’t win them all and hindsight is always 20-20. And based on past performance in transfers, imagine the PLAYERS we could buy with 10m if we got ba on a free 🙂 look up newcastle supporters, the future is bright
