Alan Pardew has said that Newcastle are looking at some young England based defenders in the January transfer window.
Nathanial Clyne – Newcastle interest in 20 year-old right back
Alan also said that the players coming in would be young and wouldn’t necessarily command a first team place immediately at Newcastle.
So that could mean that the center-back coming in this month could be Sheffield United’s 18 year-old Harry Maguire and Brighton’s 20 year-old Lewis Dunk.
Newcastle have been linked today in the Daily Mail with Crystal Palace right-back Nathaniel Clyne, and this is not the first time we’ve been linked with the 20 year-old.
Nathanial is an England u21 international (2 caps) and he has played 123 times for Palace after making his debut in a league game back in October of 2008 against Barnsley.
The player is rated at around £3M and Newcastle scouts will likely be at Tuesday’s Carling Cup semi-final first-leg, against Cardiff City, to check the player out.
And the lad has only 6 months left on his Palace contract so we doubt he would cost £3M, when he will become a free agent in the summer.
Clyne is said to be a very quiet lad, and last season he became the youngest player in the football league to play every single game of the season, and that bodes well because it means he doesn’t pick up too many injuries.
The news over the weekend was that Newcastle have offered their current right back Danny Simpson a new deal, and he is said to be close to signing it.
So it may be that Clyne will be brought in to push Danny for the starting right-back spot at Newcastle, as we try to build up our squad strength.
The priority for Newcastle in this transfer window is a center-back and a striker, so we’d be a little surprised if Newcastle signed Nathaniel in January, but he could arrive through the door at Newcastle in the summer.
As far as we can tell this lad looks like a very good player in the making, and for nothing as a free agent, he would be a really good acquisition.
