Newcastle Are Still Interested In Young Palace Star

2:01 pm, Wednesday, January 11th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 112 Comments

Newcastle are still said to be interested in Crystal Palace striker/winger  Wilfried Zaha.

Wilfied Zaha - Newcastle still interested

Zaha was in action  again last night in Crystal Palaces’ 1-0 first-leg semi-final win over Cardiff  City in London, but another player interesting Newcastle – 20 year-old right back Nathaniel Clyne –  was not playing as he was one of about five or six Palace players who had gone down with a mysterious virus over the last few days.

But Newcastle may have their bid interrupted if Palace get to the Carling Cup final against either Manchester City or Liverpool, who play their first leg tonight.

That’s because Zaha is a top player for the London side, and they would hardly sell him in January, if the reach the Wembley final.

Newcastle are becoming a top club for youngsters these days, and the Magpies will do very well if they can get the 19 year-old to Tyneside, with other clubs also interested in the player.

Zaha  is said to be valued at £4M by The Eagles and the youngster has 5 goals and 4 assists this season in his 30 appearances for Crystal Palace, and while he obviously is still developing, he looks a top talent for his age.

Wilfried was born in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire in 1992 and started his career at his home town club ASEC Mimosas.

He has already represented the England U19 side twice, making his debut against Germany last February, and he made his debut for Crystal Palace at home to Cardiff City in March of 2010 when he was just 17.

If Newcastle can lodge a decent bid  for Zaha,  that would benefit Crystal Palace,  who only went into administration a short two years ago.

But this is what their 37 year-old Scottish manager Dougie Freedman had to say  in late December  about his young star potentially joining Newcastle:

“Wilfried is better than a Newcastle. I know the chairman won’t accept four, five or six million pounds and that rules out a lot of clubs.”

“If you’re talking eight, nine or 10 then who is going to pay that? That is the top five or six in the Premier League.”

There’s just no way Palace will get any more than around £6M for their player, if that,  but they can always dream – which is what Dougie is doing  in that statement above.

For the record Wilfried Zaha has 74 appearances for Crystal Palace with 6 goals, and the Evening Chronicle is reporting today that the lad  likes the idea of coming to Newcastle.

That sounds good – if it’s true.

Comments welcome.

Yet more links and specualtion, god i hate January, less talk more…

  • 2 Beattie25 // Jan 11, 2012 at 2:07 PM

The Mayans prophecised the end of the world in 2012 and if you read the prophecy itself it is very interesting. Here is the translation:

‘When the French revoloution sees the Magpie perch on top of the world fire from the heavens will rain down an apocolypse on all. None shall escape but the name of Saint Pardew will live forever.”

  • 6 Beattie25 // Jan 11, 2012 at 2:16 PM

This is an idea for a good debate. What would you prefer?:

Newcastle to go unbeaten at the start of the 2012-2013 season, winning every game until December, get bought out by a billionaire who promises to bring the worlds best to the newly renamed St James Park, we sign Carroll for £10 million and pay him £100 000 PW to clean the boots of Ba and then, just as half time approaches wnd we are beating the mackams 6-0 the World ends!

    OR

Newcastle to be in a similar position as to now, we panic over who we may sell, wonder who it is we may bring in but we ultimatley enjoy the ride of the rollercoaster and remain ever hopefull over the future and it is a future we can witness as the World deosn’t end.

  • 7 jonny-intense // Jan 11, 2012 at 2:24 PM

He provided a good outlet for Palace against Cardiff. They had 10 men behind the ball and allowed Zaha to just ran at and past as many defenders as possible. The only option Cardiff had was to foul him.

Could be a good purchase but what sort of money are we talking about for him? I think £6million + could be used better elsewhere at the present time.

  • 8 GeordieGerman // Jan 11, 2012 at 2:24 PM

Beattie25, If Carroll cleaning Ba’s boots is televised world wide. I’d go for A. Just the idea gives me a hard on.

Indian magpie in all honesty couldnt answer as havent seen enough of tav but clyne has nearly 2 seasons as a first team rb can also play lb and has barely missed a game hes 1 of the highest rated up and coming defenders in england the lad is class and if we can really get for 3-4 mil we should be signing him

  • 25 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 11, 2012 at 3:01 PM

Lots of my mates down hear follow palace they would all be gutted to see clyne and zaha go however they would inderstand clyne going as the lad has been mint for them but feel he really deserves to be in the top flight and is ready to make the jump however they all think zaha is def not ready yet bit of a 1 trick pony and needs to kearn to read the game better in regards as to when to make runs, pass and on the whole be alot less greedy on the ball they think if he went he could be a bit if a bostock ( bostock was a promising young midlfielder who orrible arry redknapp engineered a move for thru the lads dad and has basically de railed the lads devolopment/career big time)

  • 26 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 11, 2012 at 3:02 PM

@GAZ is that the lad who just had a trail at bayern?

  • 27 GAZ09 // Jan 11, 2012 at 3:04 PM

  • 29 GAZ09 // Jan 11, 2012 at 3:12 PM

  • 31 GeordieGerman // Jan 11, 2012 at 3:14 PM

Indian Magpie @ 20, none of us know what Branson (spelt it right) has in his sponsorship contract. But you can guaranty he’ll want high power advertising. Which he won’t get if we are just a mid-table club.

  • 32 CaptainGeordie // Jan 11, 2012 at 3:20 PM

If Sir Richard Branson bought the club,he would change the Stadium name to ‘Virgin Blue Stadium’.

  • 33 GeordieGerman // Jan 11, 2012 at 3:21 PM

CaptainGeordie, why blue? All of his logos are red.

  • 34 CaptainGeordie // Jan 11, 2012 at 3:35 PM

  • 36 Ponderous Pardew // Jan 11, 2012 at 3:38 PM

Mbiwa and Hoilett would give us an enormous boost. I’m sure we could use some of our players in negotiations for Hoilett, say 5m + Gosling on loan?

  • 37 GeordieGerman // Jan 11, 2012 at 3:39 PM

Prefer “Virgin Money Arena/Stadium” than present. I’d just about prefer anything other than Puma buying the naming rights and calling it “The Black Cat Arena/Stadium.”

  • 38 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 11, 2012 at 3:50 PM

Honestly think that the money we would have to pay for samba would be close to 8-9 million think we would be better just paying the 10 for vethogen from ajax

  • 49 redondo77 // Jan 11, 2012 at 4:08 PM

I think we definitely will sign Erdinc.
I think Erdinc this time will really want to join us.
    Reasons:
    1. we are doing great, can be chalenging for europa or ucl spot, he wants to join successful team.
    2. he have chance to play, in PSG = xisco in NUFC.
    3. when we tried to sign him last time, there were too many bad publicities with barton, nolan, carrol, enrique.
    4. we were predicted to be relegated this season, so there was no point for him to join us if he could join winning team and tons of money PSG.

  • 51 Tsunki // Jan 11, 2012 at 4:12 PM

BTW does anyone else hate the Jan transfer window as much as me – the rumour mill grinds even more pathetically than ever these days and the smoke screening is utter garbage, I mean, Carroll coming back for 10mil, non-existent agent ‘selling’ Ba to Man U, Smith still at the club its like a horrible nightmare, oh wait, hang on…

  • 52 Indian Magpie // Jan 11, 2012 at 4:12 PM

how can chamakh play for arsenal while ba and tiote cannot, is it all dependent on the country’s manager

  • 53 redondo77 // Jan 11, 2012 at 4:13 PM

    @Tsunki
I love it, because alot of discussions hehhee

  • 54 GeordieGerman // Jan 11, 2012 at 4:15 PM

redondo77, UCL? not this season. I don’t understand point 2.

  • 55 Tsunki // Jan 11, 2012 at 4:17 PM

Redondo – fair enough. Agree about the Erdinc thing, I think a lot of horse trading has gone on over the year, and we’ve seen Ashley is a hard nut bargain man – I think he alsways wanted to come but Ashley n co know that and have nailed his agent down – I think they are beginning to crack now that we are staying put at the top of the table and we definitely seem to have the upper hand on this one.

  • 56 Indian Magpie // Jan 11, 2012 at 4:18 PM

what kind of a player is manipulated by his agent

  • 57 GeordieGerman // Jan 11, 2012 at 4:18 PM

  • 65 Tsunki // Jan 11, 2012 at 4:23 PM

@59 – Oh, I see. I knew it couldn’t be that us having Xisco would keep him out of the team, seeing as he is so highly rated and playing so well for us and all…. ho ho

  • 67 redondo77 // Jan 11, 2012 at 4:24 PM

    sorry
    Point 2 should be :
If he moved to NUFC, he has more chance to play than in PSG. If he stayed in PSG he will be like Xisco in NUFC.

  • 72 Tsunki // Jan 11, 2012 at 4:28 PM

Indian – I see. the money rakers have a lot to answer for they are the biggest reason why layers do have to stay where they dont want to, also move where they dont want to. Agents dont care about loyalty, when the money is to be made, the player jumps. I dare say Andy Carroll was a Mag ’til death until the £30 million mark was reached.

gotta say, think there will only be two transfers max in january, defo a young centre back of the tompkins type, but not him as hes to expensive and probably too much chew, may get somebody else but all this hoillett, erdinc, mbiwa, rhodes rumours is like groundhog day, sure as sh@t they wont be coming.

Pardew has already said we have 8 million to spend on a defender, thats a 3-5 million CB with all the cost of signing him, all this false excitement just gives people the excuse to slate the management of the club, wouldnt be surprised if we end up back in for Ridgewell(undisclosed fee), just being realistic i think.

@110 mwbia would only cost around 4 mil dont think tgats urealistic also erdnic would only be 5-6 mil rhodes is prob out of reach cos tge lads hot property at the mo but hoillet worst case we can sign him on a pre contract dont see ridgewell coming they said we want a young cb with potential plus hughton has been promised no players leaving

Oh and no one from the club has said how much weve got to spend thats just the media talkin shite no one knows except the club we might sign no one we might sign five players nobody knows its a bonus strengthening the squad as long as we dont weaken it anymore
