How the Magpies’ defense plays tomorrow will be an important factor in how we do against tomorrow’s visitors, QPR.
Mike Williamson – playing solidly at the back for Magpies
It’s a bit of a new formation at the back, from the back four who did so well in the first 11 games of the season, when we were unbeaten.
Steven Taylor is out injured for the season, but big Mike Williamson has come in, and he’s already looked very solid alongside Fab Coloccini in central defense.
And 21 year-old Italian International Davide Santon is finally making his mark in the team at left back, in place of Ryan Taylor, who did a good job for the side playing out of position in that position in the first half of the season.
Against Manchester United Ryan went to the other extreme when he started out on the right ring, and he had a good game there too, but the Liverpool native will probably be on the bench tomorrow, with the very talented Ben Arfa likely to start on the right wing.
But Ryan will play his part at some time tomorrow afternoon, there’s little doubt about that.
Mike Williamson has proved himself to be a good player for the Magpies over the last two years, and what a bargain buy the Stoke-on-Trent born player was from Portsmouth for only £1M.
This is what Mike had to say about the game tomorrow:
“We’ve lost a lot of big names, but we’ve gone on and done very well.” “The lads have responded very well.”
“We’ve brought some players in, and they’ve gelled tremendously.”“Joey would have brought a bit of spice to the game.” “He’s a good player, and he brought a lot to our team.”
“Obviously, it’s good from a Newcastle point of view that he’s not playing.” “We’re sitting pretty in the league at the minute.”
“Personally, it’s just nice to get some games under my belt. The lads have worked hard from day one, and with the togetherness they’ve got, it wasn’t hard to come in and do a job.
“It’s been a thoroughly enjoyable couple of weeks.” “If you start thinking about where you’re going to finish, you take your eye off the ball.”
“I know it’s a cliche, but we’ve just got to take it game by game, and carry on the way we’ve been playing.”
“They’ll be looking to impress, and stake their claims.” “We’re just looking to prepare properly, and carry the momentum.”
“It’ll be a tough fixture, especially as they’ve got a new manager.
We hope we can get another clean sheet tomorrow afternoon, and that would be our fourth clean sheet in the last seven games, which would be great.
But as we said earlier, if our defense can be as solid as they’ve looked over the last few games we have every chance of getting all 3 points tomorrow afternoon.
And for the record Mike Williamson has made 53 appearances so far for Newcastle, but has yet to score his first goal – maybe tomorrow?
Howay the Lads!!
