There’s news today that Lyon left back Aly Cissokho is on his way to join Newcastle United.
Aly Cissokho – on his way to Newcastle for a medical?
Maybe the reason for all the speculation is that the 24-year-old, who has one cap for France, has been left out of the Lyon squad for their important game at Montpellier this weekend.
The player is said to have some muscle pain, but the news is that he’s really on his way to Newcastle to have a medical, according to sources in France.
We’d be very surprised if this report is accurate, especially since the fee is said to be €9M, which is around £7.5M, which if anything is higher than the fee Newcastle were quoted in the summer, when they were interested in getting Aly to replace Jose Enrique but the fee was too high.
And while Newcastle will be interested in any quality defender, and a full back specifically in case Danny Simpson is sold in the summer, the fee quoted would hardly be anywhere near a bargain for the Newcastle club.
The news is coming from France, but if it’s true it doesn’t make much sense to us, because Alan Pardew is said to have around £8M to spend in January in total, and we desperately need a good center-back.
Why would Pardew spend almost all of that on a left back, who we don’t really need at the moment, when we need a center-back as the highest priority, and then a striker after that?
Arsenal are also said to be interested in the player, but the London club only want to get a left back in on loan until players like Kieron Gibbs and Andre Santos are fit again, so to say Arsenal may try to sign the player is also hard to believe.
It’s an interesting story, but we doubt if it has much truth in it.
But you never can tell of course.
For the record Cissokho joined Lyon from Porto in the summer of 2009 for a massive €15M (about £12.5M), and has played 100 times for Lyon with two goals.
