Demba Ba Welcomes Papiss Cisse To Newcastle

10:23 am, Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 72 Comments

We’ve been waiitng for Demba Ba to tweet about the Cisse transfer deal.

Papiss Cisse yesterday – Howay The Lads!!

And the Senegal striker has welcomed his Senegal team-mate to Newcastle, following an astonishing sequence of events yesterday,  that saw Cisse join Newcastle in a stunning £9M deal.

Cisse and his agent Guido Nickolay jetted into Newcastle via a private jet then flew back once the signing and all the formalities were completed.

And this is the tweet Demba Ba sent out less than an hour ago about his new Newcastle team-mate:

“I think even when he sleeps, he thinks about the back of the net. Welcome to Papisto”

One of the interviews Cisse was able to get in before he left Newcastle was with Sky Sports, and he conducted the interview in French with a translator, so the lad will have to learn English – perhaps he can join Davide Santon (and Fab Coloccini?) in his English classes.

Papiss said he would be talking to Demba Ba all about the Newcastle club when he gets back to the Senegal training camp, and they will have plenty of time to do that over the next few weeks.

Cisse said he hadn’t talked to Demba Ba before he jetted into Newcastle,  because everything had happened so very fast, but he hoped he could form a great partnership with Demba Ba on Tyneside.

Cisse said during the interview that he was a team player,  and he was nothing without his team mates, and he hoped to show that to the Newcastle fans.

We’ll have to watch the Senegal games in the African Cup of Nations and see how our two strikers play together.

Their first game is on Saturday when Senegal will play Zambia.

Comments welcome.

The senegal game is live on british eurosport 9pm sat night :)

Watching the Qpr game again and this new cm role AP handed Jonas was a masterstroke, wonder if he can play it again at Fulham. He certainly had his most effective performance of the season. Only drawback was it forced Best out on the left yet we need him in the box.

  • 3 FloridaToon // Jan 18, 2012 at 10:29 AM

I don’t believe he didn’t talk to Ba prior to his signing. In fact I think Ba probably help put us in the driver’s seat for his signing.

Ba and Ben Arfa….our two best recruiters.

From now on you shall be known as “Papisto” ;)

  • 5 ferritass // Jan 18, 2012 at 10:33 AM

What a quality signing can’t wait for the ACON to start so I can watch our new forward line on sat night. On a note about the previouse thread and this defender not getting much playing time, I seem to remember a certain mr Tiote not playing regular and we all know how good he has become so let’s not start judging yet HWTFL

  • 6 Demba and Demba // Jan 18, 2012 at 10:34 AM

Demba 1 Demba 2, we’ve got more Dembas than you, nik-nak paddy whack both can score a goal, geordie boys from senegal. :)

‘Papisstol’ – shoots from the hip!

  • 8 Jonny // Jan 18, 2012 at 10:36 AM

I know we can only dream but with the addition of a full back and a centre half, then our team is complete:

    ——————————Krul——————————
    —————–Coloccini———Douglas——————-
    Santon———————————————–Cissokho
    ———————Tiote———–Cabaye——————-
    Ben Arfa————————————————Jonas
    ——————————-Ba——————————-
    —————————– Cisse—————————–

Not an English player in sight, that is my only worry with that team!

  • 9 2_goal_tino // Jan 18, 2012 at 10:38 AM

    @7 – Krul is essentially a geordie!

we dont need a CB who will come in and want a starter place straight away we need cover thats all thats why someone between the ages of 17 and 22 will be what we need Maguire is perfect really hes 18 and only played in league 1 so he will be more patient to wait for a chance whereas the rest yous are saying will want to play and unless 1 of ours is sold then they wont and then they will want to leave

At the end of the 90`s it was Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke with the 9 and 19 shirts scaring the opponents defence. Well, now its our turn!

Cant wait to see Ba and Cissé together in the Newcastle team.

    GT89,
Yup,I think were all in agreement that Willo is too good for the bench and the only point in bringing in an expensive CB would be that if Collo’s contract talks have completely broken down, and that would be a real shame,so a loan or someone the scouting team have singled out as an up and coming would deffo be the way forward.
Btw I will put my hands up to admit I was very wrong in thinking that we werent buying a striker because of STaylors injury.

    from previous article

the tweets came from a mackem. one person i follow tweeted to ask how to report him. the lad is a pure muppet and in this day and age there is no need. he was going on about sessignion being much better than cisse then starts with racist sh1t. go figure
did you also see an arsenal fan was threatening to kill Ramsey because he had a bad game. that was retweeted by a couple of jurnos
its a shame the world is full of idiots

  • 25 Stuart // Jan 18, 2012 at 11:14 AM

It is Cisse ilovetoon. Looks like Ed took my advice and switched him for Shola.

  • 26 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 18, 2012 at 11:14 AM

Lets bury the past & move forward. Get behind Pards & the Board. Instead of airing our dirty linen in public, this signing was a masterstroke. Now let’s get a quality centre back – Samba perhaps, & make sure we retain Tiote, Krul, Cabaye & Colo. Surely we can then move up to the next level? We don’t just need cover at centre back we need quality (strenghth in depth). Why are we looking at Ravel Morrison? We don’t need to buy in trouble & another Ferguson reject. We have moved since those days!

  • 27 Stuart // Jan 18, 2012 at 11:20 AM

We dont need a top quality CB. Whats going to happen when Saylor is fit again? We’ll have 4 quality CB’s and 2 of them arent going to be happy warming the bench.

We need a young up and comer like Dunk or someone. They can develop in the squad over the next few years, learning from Colo and Saylor. But they’re also there incase of emergency.

  • 28 Krul Blow // Jan 18, 2012 at 11:20 AM

    PAAAAPPPPPIIIIISSSSTTTTTOOOO!!!!!

  • 29 Jail for Ashley // Jan 18, 2012 at 11:24 AM

    WLG
Do you mean quality as in an up and coming star or an established first teamer who wants to be in the starting eleven straight away and therefore wouldn’t be prepared to wait his turn.

  • 30 WWJBD // Jan 18, 2012 at 11:25 AM

    Stuart
If we can get a CB that is better than Saylor and Willo then why not? Saylor is injury prone after all

However I do agree we should be looking at a young CB we can help mature, still Tomkins for me who I think we will be after again either this Jan or in the summer. Would take Morrison as well then when Marv and Saylor get back fit we could have a very tidy looking squad

  • 31 Stuart // Jan 18, 2012 at 11:25 AM

Also, on Morrison. If teams like Barca and Real are interested in him and it isnt just made up by his agent, the kid must have some serious talent.

If thats the case I’d take the risk. Maybe moving him away from the bad crowd he mixes with in Manchester might give him a chance at a fresh start.

At around £1m there isnt much risk involved.

  • 32 Stuart // Jan 18, 2012 at 11:28 AM

If we could get someone better then yeah WWJBD, but unless Carr sniffs up another truffle someone better than Saylor would cost an arm and a leg.

I know MA has finally dusted off his chequebook, but I can’t see him shelling out another £8m or £9m on a player, at least not in this window.

Get a quality up and comer for cover then assess the situation in the summer when Colo either has or hasnt signed a new contract.

  • 33 GeordieGerman // Jan 18, 2012 at 11:31 AM

Stuart, I think we do need a strong CB. If we can get into Europe (and that looks possible) we’ll have to start to rotate Players.

    PAPAAAAAABAAAAAAAAAAA :-)

  • 35 WWJBD // Jan 18, 2012 at 11:34 AM

    Stuart
Tbh I am happy with Colo, Willo and Saylor as our starting CBs but if we got the chance to sign Samba (or someone of similar quality) we would be insane to turn it down.

Hopefully Cisse isnt the end of our January spending though we still need a CB

  • 36 hrocks // Jan 18, 2012 at 11:36 AM

on the centre back issue it all hinges on what colo does. loan deal for me. we maybe in a situation where we need to buy a 1st team player in the summer if colo doesnt sign

i hope the club can tie him down before the end of the window if not he will be sold in the summer. if it doesnt look like he will sign i think we will be monitoring the samba situation closely

  • 37 martoon // Jan 18, 2012 at 11:38 AM

Changing the subject – I notice Jason Prior did not play in reserve match yesterday. Supposed to be injured but I wonder if that is not good news for him!

  • 38 MrMojoRisin76 // Jan 18, 2012 at 11:42 AM

Dear god,i hope the Demba’s can avoid the, shall i say,”agricultural” tackles that will be coming their way from Zambia on Saturday. One thing that sticks out in my mind from previous ACON’s is the reckless nature of the defending.”Thou shall not pass(with your lower limbs attached)”.I’ll be watching that game with fresh underpants at the ready

  • 39 Brutooon // Jan 18, 2012 at 11:44 AM

MrMojoRisin76, you mean you have more than one pair? Posh bugger.

  • 41 magpie6699 // Jan 18, 2012 at 11:50 AM

I think the strength of a team over a season is its squad, not just the first 11 or even 14 or 15 that you might pick from for different games. We struggled when we were without ALL 3 of our CBs for some games and we all knew we needed at least a 4th capable player. With our absolute first choice team we are definitely capable of giving any PL team a good game but what I like to see is when you look at the bench and you have (say) Guthrie, Raylor, Willo, Sammy, Obertan as opposed to (no disrespect) Ryan Donaldson, Danish Pete, James Perch. Look at Citeh, Manure, Spuds , Chelski etc – see who they can bring on or turn to if they have injuries. Ay the moment I’m most worried about Colo – get him signed up and please fix him up with super-powers so he never gets injured!

  • 42 MrMojoRisin76 // Jan 18, 2012 at 11:52 AM

I’ll be watching the game in an adult diaper, the underpants are a luxury if they come out of the game with the bit’s and pieces they started the game with intact.

  • 45 Arfurglassful // Jan 18, 2012 at 11:56 AM

Dont want to damp down the euphoria but I think you’ll find Traore (Senegal Manager) wont play Ba and Cisse together. He currently prefers 4-3-3 and his captain Mamadou Niang always starts so the other two places have to be shared between Ba, Cisse and Moussa Sow

  • 46 Toon Tang // Jan 18, 2012 at 11:57 AM

  • 47 LGFUAD21 // Jan 18, 2012 at 12:05 PM

    Klatoon

Right up top. Completely agree. I thought Jonas was great against QPR even though he lost the ball a fair bit.

Im wondering if him and HBA will be given roaming roles because they were both all over the pitch at times. And while it was a sloppy win, there were periods where our passing play was beautiful.

I reckon this signing will mean Cisse will be more a goalscoring focus than Demba, With Ba playing the Shola role in respect to Cisse.

Do think that this will make BEst step up big time over the next few games though.

One worry is that this may make us play hoofball. HBA has touched on it and Pards said Cisse will play the AC role.

Either way though, I think having more threat upfront will relieve the pressure on our back allowing HBA to do his thing.

    Krul
    Simmo Willo Colo Santon
    Cabaye Tiote Jonas
    HBA
    Cisse Ba

Could Cabaye hack it on the wing if HBA was there to help out. Or even Jonas all over the place like QPR?

  • 48 ToonDownSouth // Jan 18, 2012 at 12:08 PM

    LGFUAD21

I’m sure he didn’t mean he’s a like for like replacement :/ But Ba isn’t an out and out striker – he drops deep all the time. So the only out and out finisher we have is Best

    WWJBD & Stuart

Don’t mean to be too cynical, but by the Time Saylor is fit to play for us again there’s a high chance Colo will be gone

  • 50 cabayes scooter // Jan 18, 2012 at 12:10 PM

I posted this little snippet about the ACoN yesterday amongst all the euphoria of Cisse signing.

At the ACON Senegal are in group A and the Ivory Coast are in Group B. After the group stages the winner of A plays runner up of B and vice versa.

Although both will probably win their groups if one of them slips up and finishes 2nd that means we have Tiote v the Demba Boys in round 2. Somethings got to give there.
Those second round games are played on Feb 4th, so we may get 1 or 2 of our players back earlier than anticipated. It would mean our team would be that little bit stronger for the spuds game.

Its only actually about one week earlier than reaching the final, but that is a massive game if we could get someonje back.

  • 51 ~Papiss-Toon~ // Jan 18, 2012 at 12:14 PM

Ur assuming the national teams will release players as soon as they are out of the ACoN mate

  • 54 Tino3Barca2 // Jan 18, 2012 at 12:19 PM

Think we need to start targeting some UK based players now. Clyne, N Taylor, Tomkins, Dunk, Morrison, Rhodes etc. We are getting heavy in the imports. Trouble is the prices compared to going abroad.

  • 55 ilovetoon8788 // Jan 18, 2012 at 12:22 PM

I hope Senegal gets knocked out in the group stages. lol. they can join us faster.

  • 56 cabayes scooter // Jan 18, 2012 at 12:32 PM

    WWJBD

Yeah mate, but I see no reason not to assume that. I know sometimes it gets a bit tricky and players have got “lost” before. But looking at FIFAS official rules Annex 1 part 7 states that:
Players shal resume duty with their clubs no later than 48 hours after the match for which they were called up for when playing in a different confederation to which their club is registered.
So in effect they should be back with us by the 6th, 7th at the latest.

This is of course still reliant on one team or the other finishing runner up in their group.

  • 57 LGFUAD21 // Jan 18, 2012 at 12:37 PM

    Tino3Barca2

Understand the concern, but I think we need to take the Arsenal approach. Use a foreign team to get up their, let the english lads come through the academy.

Far too expensive. And I hope Pardew points that out when he is questioned on this. Because it is a joke.

I think the inflated value of English players has been highlighted by Liverfool. For the amount they’ve spent, we wouldve been top of the league

  • 58 ArtyH // Jan 18, 2012 at 12:39 PM

We should do a swap deal with the bin divers and give then Shola and we could take Carrol back and say a couple of £m, then put that money to get Samba from Blackburn… Simples. L.O.L’s
We need a bigger squad for Europe next year, may as well start preparations now, before its too late, should be looking to get Samba, he would come as we are getting to be a force to be reckoned with.

  • 59 WWJBD // Jan 18, 2012 at 12:40 PM

    cabayes scooter

FIFAs rules might state that but if Senegal want to keep them longer I’d bet they find a way to do so. Visa issues etc etc etc

Would love to have them back early but I wont pin any hopes on it

  • 60 LGFUAD21 // Jan 18, 2012 at 12:42 PM

Maybe, thats what convinced MA. Now we are still at a strong position with over half the season gone already.

  • 61 cabayes scooter // Jan 18, 2012 at 12:44 PM

I agree mate. I was just sticking in a hypothetical situation where we MAY get Tiote or the Dembas back early. They’ll prob play each other in the final knowing our (as Newcastle fans) luck. That would prob do wonders for their confidence but the wait for us will be terrible.

  • 62 nightfa11 // Jan 18, 2012 at 12:46 PM

im glad that we’re not copying arsenal.. what wenger did was buying kids (in summer he bought some of the oldtimers, but generaly he buys kids) & those players need 5 years to develop.. we are buying experienced great players with best years still ahead of them.

as for papiss..is it true that we payed 7,5 mio for him? which can rase to 9 mio? if so great f****** business=) hes a player who will still be worth 5,6 mio at 32:D

  • 63 ToonDownSouth // Jan 18, 2012 at 12:50 PM

To be honest as much as I’d like to see them do well, I’d bloody love to see one of our boys lift an international trophy.

I’ve got a small bet on Senegal to win because the odds were ridiculous, and it’d be nice for them because they’ve never won it. And Cheik.. well, that would just be marvelous

  • 64 ToonDownSouth // Jan 18, 2012 at 12:51 PM

    I mean

“see them do well for us”

  • 65 WWJBD // Jan 18, 2012 at 12:51 PM

Haha true lad and I hope we do get them back soon…though if Ba and Cisse come back from the ACoN with the trophy (and a few goals) and Tiote comes back with a runners up medal (or the other way around) that can only mean they will come back breathing fire for us :)

Plus we have Guthrie, Vuckic, Abied and Gosling all ready to cover Tiote and Shola/Best/HBA should hold their own until Ba and Cisse comes home

  • 66 drongo // Jan 18, 2012 at 1:16 PM

If Dema 2 is similar in style to Demba 1 then we could really be in for a treat – all my favourite teams play with a solid 2 CMs and 4 other interchangeable players

We can now genuinely do that Tiote & Cabaye can make the whole thing tick and set the tempo, Jonas, Demba, Demba and HBA do their thing. Obertan, Marveaux and Sammi as back up – pretty exciting!

    Something a bit like this:
    ————Timmo
    Simmon—Willo–Collo—Santono
    ————Cabbo —Toto
    HBO—–Papo—-Bo——–Jono

I’ve nothing against youth but our youthful CBs are not great (Kadar & Perch) & that’s being kind to them. We only need Colo & Willo injured/suspended & then we have problems. Look what happened at Norwich. We need competition for places. Samba’s not overcostly at £5m & he can score goals. Looks like Cissoko (Lyon) is still on the radar but we’ll probably end up with Ridgwell (relegated CB) Tomkins alsowent down with the Hammers. Are they good enough.? The young lads Dunk & Maguire certainly have potential but it’s a big ask to step up from Championship & Div 1. A fine blend of youth & experience is the ideal solution. Maybe someone is already lined up that we havn’t told Tottenham about?

  • 72 Marty-Toon // Jan 18, 2012 at 7:03 PM

    @ west lancs Geordie
None of the youthful CBS are good enough?
Donachie was very impressed with Kadar the other night at Leeds where he was playing against seasoned pros.
    Gave interview on the website
Maybe AP shoulda used him instead of perch in those games?
