Newcastle United Zoning In On New Center-Back

10:18 am, Thursday, January 19th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 87 Comments

Newcastle are now zoning in on a center-back to bring to Tyneside, following the successful and exciting capture of top striker Papiss  Cisse from SC Frieburg on Tuesday.

James Tomkins – West Ham player still a target

That signing has not only energized Newcastle fans, but according to Danny Simpson this morning it has also energized the Newcastle squad, because it shows Newcastle’s ambition.

Not only that,  but it shows that owner Mike Ashley is finally starting to spend some of that £35M received for Andy Carroll a short twelve months ago from Liverpool.

And news today that Newcastle are now concentrating on getting in a new center-back to the club, which after all, was January’s number one priority.

The news is that Managing Director Derek Llambias and Newcastle Secretary Lee Charnley are attempting to drive through the acquisition of a top central defender before the final week of the transfer window.

That means that a signing may even be imminent,  and James  Tomkins of West Ham remains  a leading target, and Middlesbrough’s Rhys Williams is also in the reckoning.

We expect whoever is signed to be quite young, because he will have time to develop with top center-backs  Coloccini, Steven Taylor and Mike Williamson already on Tyneside.

Newcastle’s impressive Chief Scout Graham Carr has stepped up the pace of his scouting trips to Europe over the last several weeks,  so it could also be that a center-back comes in from the continent – like 22 year-old Montpellier captain Yanga-Mbiwa for example.

But Newcastle can also shock us, since Papiss Cisse was not on many people’s lists to arrive in January, even though we were after him over the summer.

There’s also a chance that players could leave in January, with Peter Lovenkrands and Alan Smith, whose contracts both run out in June, being the most likely to leave.

If we can get a top young center-back in during January, we’ll have been very pleased with the deals Newcastle have done in January, and we also have some optimism that a number of new top players will also arrive in the summer.

Howay The Lads!!

Comments welcome.

So we’ve spent £10 million of the AC money.
Now where’s the £25 mill of the AC money!?!?

  • 2 Tonzzz. // Jan 19, 2012 at 10:22 AM

to be completely honest, james tomkins is showing a massive lack of ambition. too bog standard of a defender, we should be looking to try to sign up one of the better defenders like toure, vertonghen, onuoha, on loan deals, just to see us out until summer, when we can try to revive taylor, and then use our summer transfer budget to bring in a full time back up defender then.

whats this about ryan bouduluez lads

  • 4 AK Malaysia // Jan 19, 2012 at 10:23 AM

We really need a defender this Jan window.. Then we can close the shop / window…

  • 5 Rotonda heights // Jan 19, 2012 at 10:24 AM

just can’t see it with Tomkins myself, far better Rhys Williams, M’Biwa etc.

  • 6 AK Malaysia // Jan 19, 2012 at 10:25 AM

ED.. Small respect to our big man Ameobi.. How bad he is.. I still remember the smiel / laughter he made scoring that penalty (never miss 1) & scoring vs the mackems… Not forgeting that beautiful trike vs Spurs… So, please ED.. That guy play for more than 10 years for us already…

  • 7 Troleibusiukas_LTU // Jan 19, 2012 at 10:26 AM

1st Yanga-Mbiwa, 2nd Rhys William, 3rd Tomkins for me. Also Onoucha equaly as Aussie.

  • 8 Troleibusiukas_LTU // Jan 19, 2012 at 10:28 AM

Also i’d better sign that defenders from Shefield and Brighton instead of Tomkins from West Ham. It would be cheaper and better in longer run trust me.

  • 9 -Tendo- // Jan 19, 2012 at 10:28 AM

Does anyone know if tickets for the FA Cup tie against Brighton will go on general sale or will they still only sell away tickets to members/season ticket holders?

  • 10 Paul P // Jan 19, 2012 at 10:32 AM

Chris samba. Get him bought. That’s all we need.

  • 11 LewSpi // Jan 19, 2012 at 10:33 AM

AK Malaysia, Shola is on the banner, you just can’t see him tying Papisto’s laces.

Dannyo, please don’t start that conversation again, it was exhausted during the months January – October.

  • 14 Toontappy // Jan 19, 2012 at 10:36 AM

I went to the Wrexham Brighton match last night great game could have gone either way, young Lewis Dunk was very good,so calm under pressure had loads of the ball considering he played centreback, made 3 or 4 tremendous tackles and bought the ball through midfield with great confidence, looks a top prospect.

  • 15 LewSpi // Jan 19, 2012 at 10:37 AM

Haha I would call you a swear word if it wouldn’t be censored.

  • 16 Phatoon // Jan 19, 2012 at 10:39 AM

It would be stupid to spend this mystical £35 million over a short period, adding £10 million of it every window or year wouldn’t be too bad. It’s good to have some “reserves”.

@Paul, Would love Samba, but can’t see it happening, but if we did I would be beaming :)

  • 17 2_goal_tino // Jan 19, 2012 at 10:40 AM

Tendo – only to ST holders and members, because the club want to know who they are selling to in order to prevent things such as the Darlington game, and if they do happen they will know who was responsible.

  • 18 ALAN1974 // Jan 19, 2012 at 10:41 AM

Dannyo just because we have 35 million does not mean we have to spend 35 million if you look at the players we have signed i dont care if it takes 3 years to spend that money as long as the team improves like it has

  • 19 LewSpi // Jan 19, 2012 at 10:44 AM

And Phatoon takes Dannyo’s bait, meanwhile, Dannyo sits at home in his wingback leather chair, stroking his cat with one hand and a fat cigar in the other, smirking at the thought of his achievement for the day.

    Evil mastermind.

    Krul
    Simmo. Colo. Mbiwa. Santon
    Cabaye. Tiote. Guthrie
    Benny
    Cisse. Ba

That’s definately a champions league possibility

  • 23 darko // Jan 19, 2012 at 10:50 AM

It’s great to sign new players, and none better than a new striker. However a coaches job is to make the team better, something that gets overlooked all the time when teams just sign new players rather than coach their current players to be better. Our coaches have done this though, I can’t think of a player who hasn’t improved recently. Long may this continue.

Hehe, i like the description mate. Much better than being called a swear word. Sadly, i’m at work, and it was simply a stroke of genius ;)
Or a stroke of “Evil Mastermind” as you call it ;)

  • 41 Dannyo // Jan 19, 2012 at 11:13 AM

    Graeme Bailey @SkyGraemeBailey
Blackburn have signed Bordeaux striker Anthony Modeste on loan until the end of the season. #brfc

Could be that Hoilett is on the move? Cause Blackburn doesn’t have a problem scoring imo…

  • 42 GeordieToon89 // Jan 19, 2012 at 11:15 AM

Hrocks – dont be suprised too see Hoillet come to us were interested but just depends on the price cos hes free in the summer

  • 43 Vest // Jan 19, 2012 at 11:16 AM

Has anyone thought about how AP wants to do business? He said that we weren’t looking for at striker, but only a CB.

Now he has said that we are well covered at the full backs, yet the Cissokho rumour wont die. Is it a coincident?

    Imagine this team:

    Krul
    Santon – Willo – Colo – Cissokho
Ben Arfa – Toite – Cabaye – Jonas
    Ba – Cissé

If that team could stay injury free, it would definitely be good enough for a Europa League spot. And we are just 4 points short of a Champions League spot.

    Exiting times ahead :)

    HTL

  • 44 Ponderous Pardew // Jan 19, 2012 at 11:18 AM

Have a hunch we’ll see a CB through the door by the end of tomorrow.

  • 45 fgb224lbs // Jan 19, 2012 at 11:18 AM

Funny how barton comments on all things bad.at newcastle but we sign a prolific striker for peanuts (you get monkeys for that according to barton) and he keeps his trap shut. Nice to see where his “ambitious” club is goin. Nowhere but back to the championship in 2 years max

  • 46 Dannyo // Jan 19, 2012 at 11:21 AM

    @Vest
I think he’s answering the questions by giving away nothing mate.
If we decided to sign a striker early this window, do u think people would know, or that Pardew would hint at it?
The closest we have gotten to Pardew saying we would sign a striker this window, is when Sammy got injured aswell. Pardew was then quoted a few days saying that maybe they would have to change their minds about a striker.

In the end, saying we’ll not be getting a striker and get one, is better then saying we will get a striker and not get one.
I think there’s a mix of past misfortunes and generelly keeping the cards close to the chest.

  • 47 Stuart // Jan 19, 2012 at 11:23 AM

Theres no point waiting for a positive comment from Barton like.

He’s realised he’s made as massive career mistake in leaving us/forcing a move from us to QPR. We’ll finish in the Europa league this season and they’ll be very lucky to stay up.

But its ok because he got the wages he wanted.

If you look at our team from two years ago to our team now its so much better now, not just with the new additions but AP is getting the very best out of the players we already head.

The futures bright, the futures Black and White!

  • 48 Jonny // Jan 19, 2012 at 11:24 AM

No team with Danny Guthrie in it will reach Europe. Sorry lads but he still hasn’t done enough to change my opinion on him. God knows how he got motm last game as he tripped over the ball about 3 times. he maybe good at passing it backwards and sideways but did he make more than one penetrative pass in that game? Million miles of Cabaye.

  • 49 Stuart // Jan 19, 2012 at 11:27 AM

    Are you kidding Jonny?

He got man of the match because he was class in CM, spraying passes all over the place, constantly pushing forward, strong defensively, oh, and he also got the assist for Bests goal.

If we didnt have Tiote and Cabaye as first choice CM’s I’d be more than happy for Guthrie to play regularly.

    Definately deserves a new contract.

  • 50 Indian Magpie // Jan 19, 2012 at 11:29 AM

if we have to end up in Europa then i hope we do it by winning the FA cup,

    If Not

    Bring on UCL ;)

  • 51 Indian Magpie // Jan 19, 2012 at 11:30 AM

    Stuart @ 48

The assist for the goal goes 2 Raylor, not Guthrie

  • 52 Irie-Magpie // Jan 19, 2012 at 11:31 AM

Fourth place and the FA cup is up for grabs and AP and staff are aware of it and one or both are realistic targets now.

Proof is in the way AP and staff are assembling our squad..
    1. Strong forward line
    2. Hardworking Midfield
    3. Solid, compact Back line
    4. Confident keeper
    5. Strength in dept (which will allow us to go all out)

  • 53 Stuart // Jan 19, 2012 at 11:31 AM

Transfer dealing is like poker, you bluff and hide your hand,
Consider this, MA being the businessman he is, as a matter of fact any business, don’t get successful by blabbing all over town who they are merging with, taken over or sponsoring for fair of the deal going bust or in our case starting a bidding far.

Notice our signings have being like a stealth bomber (one/two days and it’s done and dusted) with reporters and journos being treated like “Mushroom”.

QPR will fail just like Scum.
Seen it a million times before.
    1. Club gets promoted
    2. Club gets injection of cash
    3. Club sacks manager that promoted them
    4. Club hires semi good manager to move them up
    5. Club gets over ambitious
    6. Club spends beyond means
    7. Club nearly gets relegated
    8. Club gets relegated next season
    9. Club sells best players, struggles with cashflow
    10. Club becomes below par Championship team again.

Everything cause there’s no bloody structure, there’s no “over time thinking”, it’s just the greatest ammount of success in the littlest ammount of time.
