Newcastle To Sign Championship Defender This Week For £3M

The Sunday Sun is reporting today that Newcastle will be signing a defender from the Championship within the next week.

Adrian Mariappa – Newcastel will pay £3M for this player

It seems that Newcastle are after 25-year-old Watford central defender Adrian Mariappa, and the club are willing to pay £3M for him.

And as well as getting that player in this coming week, Alan Pardew is keen to get Fabricio Coloccini tied down to a new deal on Tyneside, as we reported earlier today.

Newcastle will be traveling to Tenerife today for a sunshine break and team building exercises, but Newcastle hope to also carry out more transfer business in this coming week.

Adrian Mariappa joined Watford as a youth player, and it’s the only club he’s ever played for, and Adrian made his debut for the club in a League Cup match against Notts County in August of 2005

He will have also played with Mike Williamson, when Mike was at Watford from January through September of 2009, before Mike signed on at Portsmouth for £3M, almost five months before he joined Newcastle for £1M.

The player is of Fijian and Congolese ancestry, and he has played 231 times for Watford with 3 goals, and the 5’11” defender was born in Harrow, London.

Mariappa is ranked fourth in a list of Hornets’ players who have made the most consecutive League starts, and he has made 113 in a row.

It seems he is being brought in as a squad player, but he can play for Newcastle in case Coloccini or Williamson get injured through May.

And of course he could be like his former Watford team-mate Mike Williamson, and improve big time on Tyneside, and we’re sure that’s what Newcastle will be hoping for.

It also seems that Coloccini’s agent will be coming in from Argentina in the next 10 days or so, and that Newcastle are said to be very confident they can close a five-and-a-half year contract with the Argentine International.

That’s good news indeed – and we need some of that today!

And as we reported earlier, Newcastle are still keen on West Ham’s James Tomkins, and he could be signed in the summer.

The news is that Newcastle will sign another defender in the summer, and that’s in addition to Mariappa, and that’s certainly what Newcastle need to bolster the back four.

Comments welcome.

he’s too old and small, we need a young, tall defender like Lewis Dunk or Harry Maguire as both are great prospects for the future and are really good now.

I’d say if this tells us anything, it’s that we’re looking locally for our CB, papers haven’t got nothing on our targets, as I’ve said before they’re being treated like: “Mushrooms “

Got to remember Taylor is first choice so who ever is coming in will have to be ready to play fight for the spot or sit on the bench if not cutting it.

Pardew must trust on Graham Carr. He’s already buy Obertan by himself and he is not a gem like Cabaye or Santon or other come from abroad. Enough with championship players. Not anyone can be like Norwich lads.

Thought Douglas said there was good news on our defensive targets. Well, he ain’t said anything that we don’t already know. What a load of utter rubbish. On Adrian Mariappa, never seen him play but we really should be aiming just a little higher. We where talking about Europa cup this week, well if you want that Pardew, spend the 8 bloody million you have and bring in someone of a good standard.

Was at the match yesterday and Best and Ameobi were pathetic; never looked like scoring, couldnt hold the ball up and have no pace. Thank god weve got the Dembas coming back!

On a brighter note Ben Arfa was superb! Pards has got to find a way of building the team around him, which is possible when Tiote is back in midfield.

Not surprised we collapsed in second half as I was worried we were so light in midfield with those 2 strikers AND HBA.

Poor tactics yesterday although were brilliant in first half; Should have known Fulham would change things second half and Pards should have changed it sooner cos when he did, it was better 🙁

Ah well it’s only a blip cos weve got so much quality in the squad!

Some interesting posts on these blogs this morning – not a million miles from what I’ve been saying about certain players for ages. Ed- the news obviously hasn’t reached the States yet, but Tomkins has just signed a new contract at West Ham – hope you’re fighting the good fight! I’m led to believe that the defender Pardew would ideally like in the summer is Vertonghen, the Ajax lad, but we’ll get killed in the rush by the likes of Arsenal and Spurs.

I don’t see this as didn’t AP say young English players would come in, but then again Cisse came in so we might sign anyone. My guess it will be someone as yet not mentioned and they will be another star if lord Carr has anything to do with it

So if Senegal get knock out of the ACON in the group stage (which they probably will do as they look woeful) we could have the dembas back for the Blackburn game and certainly the Villa game. Get in!

It’s the first time yesterday I thought that players like Cabaye looked tired.

second half they liften things slightly and we couldn’t compete. No doubts if Cheick was playing we would have won the game. This break will do us good and we will come back ready to advance in the cup, and take 3 points from Blackburn.

With Senegal losing last night, there is a very real chance that Ivory Coast and Senegal will meet in the first knockout round. If that happens, then you would think that Cheick would come out on top. We would have both strikers back for mid February.

That’s if Senegal win their 2 games! 1 more defeat and it’s over! They would be back even sooner!!!

When we got tired yesterday though you could see us resort to hoofball tactics which killed Jonas and HBA who had completely run the game first half.

another frustration was being suckered by the long ball to Duff, which is the most obvious tactic Fulham have used for 3 years. Thought Pardew would have learnt from last year.

there i was thinking I might wake up to M’Biwa and Cissoko being signed to address our chronic lack of pace at the back.

This signing has to be the least inspiring to date and falls in to the perch, best bracket. Not top drawer in any sense. For a couple of million more M’Biwa would tick all out boxes. Poor and Williamson has been found out several times on the floor against nippy forwards. Would be surprised if this is a Carr recommendation.
