Senegal Lose 2-1 Against Zambia In African Cup of Nations

We’d like for the Ivory Coast and Senegal to do well in the African Cup of  Nations – but only for our players involved.

Demba Ba – Senegal beaten 2-1 by Equatorial Guinea in big upset

One the selfish side of things, we wouldn’t mind too much if they didn’t do too well, because it would mean that Cheick Tiote, Demba Ba and  Papiss Cisse would be coming home to Newcastle earlier than the final, which takes place on  on February 12th.

And good – news bad news last night that Senegal were beaten 2-1 by Zambia in their Group A match,  in a game that kicked off at 9:00 pm UK time, and it was a shock defeat for Senegal.

Demba Ba played the whole game and Papiss Cisse being brought on as a substitute after 67 minutes.

It’s bad news for our two Senegal strikers but if it means the lads return sooner rather than later that would be good news for Newcastle.

Even before the game Demba Ba was not happy about the Newcastle 5-2 defeat at Fulham yesterday as he tweeted:

“Very unfortunate for that result. A win would have been so good. Now i just have to be concentrate for the opening game vs zambie!!!”

But there was no joy for Ba as his team went behind 2-0 early in the game,  with goals from Mayuka after 12 minutes and Kalaba after 20 minutes.

N’Doye pulled one back for Senegal after 74 minutes,  but it wasn’t enough and Senegal went down to a defeat, and that was a huge upset.

This is what Demba ba tweeted after the defeat:

“Sad day! Now it’s bedtime. Tomorrow is an other day”

Senegal’s next game is on Wednesday against Equatorial Guinea, one of the host nations, and they beat Lybia 1-0 last night.

The Ivory Coast and Cheick Tiote start off their campaign tonight against Sudan.

Comments welcome.

Thought we kooked unusually sloppy at the back yesterday krul didnt look commanding simmo wasnt in the fame at all willo looked short if pace colo had a mare which is bizarre! Felt but sorry for santon lad was starting to look full of confidence but felt he was left to fight a losing battle own his own as the rest of defence went missing.
Midfield well danny n jonas i thought had a decent enough game in fact truth be told jonas looks a better number 10 the wor benny who i thought had a shocker really went AWOL along with cabaye (not sure if he was really match fit) for me benny should not be starting yet hasnt earned it and all oards points about his workrate were there to see. Shola should not be starting games simple as hes a good impact sub for 20-30 mins at the end but shouldnt be starting as i think hes starting to get to besty aswell who looked after 20 mins looked liked he really couldnt be bothered to try and get the ball to strolla anymore

rant about to begin how many left footed players u see play at ryt back non how many ryt footed players u see at left back loads why bcoz its far easier to adapt playing on the left side if your footed n even if you play there your whole career does not make u a f*****g left back aaaarrrgggggggggghhhhhhhhhh

Why do we have to slate players after a defeat. Williamson, Krul, Santon have all come in for critisicm. They will know as we know, they didnt play well yesterday but its one game and this “Team” have got us in a great position. We aint gonna win every game are we or we would walk the league – Haway think about it folks!

We’ve just got to chalk it down to a terrible day at the office and move on.

No point finding individual errors as they ALL messed up at some point throughout the game!

Also, as ‘klenja’ said, we scored 2 great goals (more than our season average). The whole team just completely switched off for a 20mins.

I certainly don’t think this will impact the team’s morale for the Brighton game.

this happends in football, to much actually. You can blame the referee all day and swear all nigght, in the end its the teams foult. We got lucky that santon didnt get sent off, there we were lucky, they got a penalty, they were lucky. Than it was all Fulham and we never never got back to the game. That i call the beuaty of fotball, u play for 95 minutes if u wan a win a PL match !

I was sooooo ANGRY yesterday but what can u doo ??? ::D:D:D:D:D:D

still shocked about what happened – its was so absurd…we were so good in the first half and i was saying to myself “wow we really are bossing a decent team away…boy something went astray.
    few observartions though
#the reason benny looses the ball too much is our players just give him the ball as to say here you go, do your magic – and no players making any runs….i thought he was our best player with jonas.
    #santon had a nightmare…but will come good
#best dosnt work on the left – i like this tactic but with obertan or loverpants
#shola…i like you..and you are a legend in your own way, but its time to say hang up those skates.
#most bizarre thing though- why did our backline keep playing that high line…it was suicidal time after time…..
    whats your view?

i was at the game yesterday and i almost burst a blood vesel shouting at shola – he was truely truely aweful.

santon had an absolute shocker as shearermania said. lovely runs forward but when you’re a left-back giving the ball away like he did you leave the left back spot exposed forcing colo to cover and he aint the quickest – and that was the recipe for all five of their goals.

as for pardew saying the first goal was the turing point – stop using excuses alan, we lost because nearly ALL our team – even the reliable ones like cabaye – kept giving the ball away.

as for this post – why do we have to support senegal and ivory coast and want them to do well in the ACON ? i personally don’t support either of these teams and i want my best players back at my club so the sooner these two teams get knocked out the better – sorry 🙂

#18 Cant agree mate santon was at fault for the first but after that they punished us down the middle. Zamora dropped off in the hole and fed the ball over to johnson and dempsey. The line was too high with no centre mid cover in front of them. My view anyways!

Don’t know how you can say Ben ARFA shouldn’t be starting, who else do you want at RW? Obertan? Raylor? his crosses are ineffective as shola and best can’t head them, so who else are we gonna put there?
Ben ARFA played well, he was just relied on to much, every time he lost the ball he tried to win it back.

IMHO we lost the game in the first half, Shola has stated he will not change even with the new signing of Cisse, is that not a clue, he is LAZY. Going forward I remember one of our lads making a forward pass to strolla and he just did not move and the frustration showed ( Jonas/Best I think it was ). It must get to you when you are working your nuts off for the team and a lazy get like that is just walking around the pitch. Also I think this effected Best as he did not have anyone to play off. Then we come to the defence Collo was left exposed a few times and needs someone to do the running and Willo is not that person. I don’t blame Willo, but we need someone better and faster for certain games, he’s OK for Stoke, Bolton and the like where a big lad is needed for aerial bombardment. Samba would have taken Johnson out long before he was a threat! The two fullbacks had a bad day too, unusual but true.
When we are playing at our best the forwards take the weight off the midfield and the defence by playing a high line, when your forwardline is none existent you CANNOT play that game! The problem is with a squad so thin as ours who can play alongside Best to bring the best out of him, and dont say Loverman please!

Can someone tell me if Ba and Cisse can come back early if they are knocked out? I can’t see Senegal doing well if there defense play like that.

@ArtyH – i remember the shola incident well. it was a great move by jonas (i think) and he dinked it to the left where there was a gaping hole ready for shola to run into and he just stood there…shocking.

    To be honest,they were shocking.
Their defence was poor, midfield passing was atrocious.
1 big plus for Senegal was demba BA looking pretty good at times.
We got the pick of their players.
    Thought sow was disappointing
