Ben Arfa Voted Budweiser Player Of Round Three Of FA Cup

2:33 pm, Monday, January 23rd, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 145 Comments

Hatem Ben Arfa has been voted the Budweiser Player of the Round for the 3rd round of the FA Cup.

Ben Arfa - after scoring fabulous goal against Blackburn

Ben Arfa scored probably the best individual goal ever scored at St. James’  Park in its 120 year history as the home of Newcastle United,  and thoroughly deserves the award.

The French International, who is coming into top form for Newcastle, received 43% of the 4,000 votes cast on TheFA.com website.

Ben Arfa was switched to the right wing in the second half  of that Cup tie , after Newcastle had gone 1-0 down against Blackburn Rovers.

But the 24 year-old led the Newcastle side to victory and got Newcastle level with that brilliant individual goal, when he beat at least six Blackburn players on his way into the penalty area, before he smashed the ball into roof of the net with that fantastic left foot of his.

Newcastle won that game 2-1 with another good individual goal from Argentine winger Jonas Gutierrez, who chipped the ball into the back of the net with almost the last kick of the match,  and Newcastle now play at Brighton in the 4th round on Saturday.

Ben Arfa will now receive a commemorative Budweiser Player of the Round trophy and will attend the FA Cup final at Wembley in May as a guest of the FA and of Budweiser.

We hope he’s also on the field that day playing for Newcastle United. :D

Ben Arfa again showed great form on Saturday afternoon against Fulham, and managed to score a goal out of nothing with just 5 minutes to go in that game.

It was Ben Araf’s 3rd goal in the last 5 games he’s played for the magpies (not too bad at all), and he is slowly but surely becoming a fixture for Newcastle out on the right wing.

Congratulations to Ben Arfa on this award, and the youngster is now getting  back to the form he showed before his terrible double broken leg he suffered on October 3rd, 2010 at Manchester City.

Comments welcome.

    Congrats. Great player.

About our result that is still shocking people.

We can look at it from 2 perspectives:
    1. Liverpool, Stoke, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, Norwich, all lost points. So we are still in almost the same position (Norwich and Chelsea add 1 points each).

    2. If we would hold our ground in that game and would have won it, it would be amazing. 3 points – 39 in total.

But, it didn’t happen so at least we should be glad that we can fix this.

  • 5 Thump // Jan 23, 2012 at 2:45 PM

Ah buggery. I forgot to type “first” and act like it was some kind of divine message from God. Sorry to disappoint lads.

On a serious note, I think Arfa has proved that he’s better at cutting into the central channels from the wing rather than running around midfield like a headless chicken and tiring himself out. I wonder how good he’d be as a striker?

  • 6 Toon Tang // Jan 23, 2012 at 2:45 PM

and rightly so. goal of the round. hes starting to brew nicely and is getting more goals and assists with every game that passes.

Can’t wait to see this lad playing with Ba and Cisse :)

looks like Tav may be at BHA game but for them!!!!! loan deal on the cards but i dont think we will let him play against us ala Lua Lua

Imagine that, JB. Arfa, Cabaye, Tioté; Demba, Dave… excuse me, I need some alone time.

  • 10 MacToon // Jan 23, 2012 at 2:52 PM

Congrats to Ben Arfa and like Ed say’s, let’s hope he’s playing in the Cup Final.

  • 11 Thump // Jan 23, 2012 at 2:55 PM

@hrocks: I think Kazenga is still injured so he can’t play against us anyway. Even then, we can recall him for cup games and confuse the f out of BHA :D

  • 12 Benry // Jan 23, 2012 at 2:57 PM

I doubt Pardew will play Ben Afa and the two Dembas in the same team. Too much quality for him to take!

  • 13 hrocks // Jan 23, 2012 at 3:03 PM

    lol thump

thats just not cricket but i would not put it past us to do something along those lines if we could. i think he might of signed a contract with them so hes their player.

  • 14 planb // Jan 23, 2012 at 3:04 PM

After watching that car crash of a game at Fulham and the startled rabbit caught in the headlights look on Pardews bracket who knows what team this guy will field against Brighton personally i would play the same team that played fulham to atone for that diabolical performance

  • 15 Thump // Jan 23, 2012 at 3:06 PM

uh, recall Tav I meant lol

Football’s an unpredictable game at times and that’s why it can be so enthralling to some.

Man City beat Man U 6-1, Man City lost to the makem’s 1-0, doesn’t really make much sense.

    bills-son // Jan 23, 2012 at 9:28 AM

There ia always one daft result for every team in a season – Man U beat Arsenal 8-2 and lost 6.0 at home to City and City lost at SLand 1.0

I’m ready with my razor blades……………………..

  • 17 Beattie25 // Jan 23, 2012 at 3:08 PM

    Can Tav play?

Did he not play for Sheff Wed in the FA cup? Cup tied me thinks?

  • 18 JackButler // Jan 23, 2012 at 3:13 PM

@Thump – With HBA, Cabaye, Ba and Cisse we have some classy, intelligent players. If HBA is to play on the right we need to find a way of causing more of a threat on the left, whether that with Jonas or someone new coming in I don’t know but there are exciting times ahead my friend

  • 19 davybtoon // Jan 23, 2012 at 3:13 PM

tav did play for sheff wed in cup so he wud b cup tied if he joined brighton on loan wud b good move for him n the next step up in his development

  • 20 Thump // Jan 23, 2012 at 3:13 PM

…bloody hell he’s not even being secretive about it. Make sure you leave those razorblades in the gutter for a few weeks – if the cut doesn’t kill you, the infection might!

if we signed adrain mariappa n anthony knockaert that wud b great business hopefully ship out lovenkrands n smith, then in the summer get douglas n hoillet on frees n corgnet 5mill n we wud hav an amazing squad, with the likes of tav, sammi, vukic, abeid, ferguson all properly challenging for places

  • 23 Thump // Jan 23, 2012 at 3:23 PM

I think Santon will be our outlet on the left, JB. His overlaps are beautiful – you wouldn’t even know Enrique had gone!

  • 24 JackButler // Jan 23, 2012 at 3:27 PM

@Thump – Fair point about Santon, but I would like to see what Marveuax is capable of when he’s fit, those two on the left could be something special

    Simpson – Saylor – Colo – Santon

HBA—- Cabaye – Tiote – Marveuax

    ————-Ba – Cisse

Subs – Elliott, Tavernier, Guthrie, Sammy, Vukic, Best, Willo

    Starting to look very good

think its funny when people are so quick to critcise pardew for playing the likes of obertan ryan taylor but when he doesnt play them and we get beat hes ‘tactically inept with no plan b’ if we were top of the league people would still be complaining.. oh and the reason ben arfa hasnt been playing all season is because he was out for a year with a horrific injury and is lucky his career isnt over he even said himself he wasnt 100% not that long ago pardew has done the right thing giving him little cameos here and there getting him more hungry for first team football and look at how thats worked out past 2 games hes been arguebly our best player….. get off the managers back hes done a miricle with what hes had to work with… rant over

  • 37 WWJBD // Jan 23, 2012 at 3:43 PM

I think AP should give Lee Clarke a little whisper about Jason Prior. Surely he’s good enough for league one if we thought he was worth a look at. Be a shame to see him back at Bognor Regis

  • 41 nufc786 // Jan 23, 2012 at 3:59 PM

he’s not going back to bognor eastligh a conference north club has signed him

  • 42 ilovetoon8788 // Jan 23, 2012 at 4:03 PM

Sky reporting we officially have made a bid for Mariappa. We defenitely need someone more proven than him. I hope he doesn’t turn out to be the next Perch after impressing in the Championship, not many can make the step up. But we are in no need for players to make up numbers.

We need someone who is quality to go straight to the first team and Mariappa is not one of them.

  • 43 max // Jan 23, 2012 at 4:03 PM

  • 44 Magpies-till-d3ath // Jan 23, 2012 at 4:08 PM

Wonder if senega will change their line up after the disgrace they out on. Even BA was shite!

  • 45 Zebras4Life // Jan 23, 2012 at 4:11 PM

Why are aome peeps down on this idea of Mariappa coming in. For starters, he has some pace, which we have none of at that position. Let alone depth. He is very strong on the ball and is young with a great track record of health. Ill take my chances w this signing. I wouldnt be surprised if he gets some nice PT too. Perfect signing at the perfect price if you ask me! Not to mention, Carr is the man at assessing talent!

  • 46 t00ntime // Jan 23, 2012 at 4:11 PM

Ilovetoon8788 erm you got it the wrong way round mate, we need defenders capable of playing but room to grow…
whats the point of bringing in someone like lets say samba, so that next season we have saylor colo williamson and samba all wanting to play and only 2 aloud to play?
dont say man utd have more then enough…

until we get in to europe year after year, there is no point of having 22 starters when only 11 play, if where in europe all 22 will be played

so for now we need a average player who can become a starter, so that when colo retires we have someone who can walk in ;-)

  • 47 hrocks // Jan 23, 2012 at 4:20 PM

on the Mariappa front i do not think we would bring a player in to be a body.Ashley would not sanction a move for a player who would not offer anything to us. It doesnt look like anyone has seen him play so i dont think anyone is in a strong position to comment. I just dont see us wasting money. Watford fans seen to like him

  • 48 Beattie25 // Jan 23, 2012 at 4:32 PM

I’ll ask again is Simmo good enough?

15 better RB’s in the prem I think!

We need to sort out that defence.

  • 49 t00ntime // Jan 23, 2012 at 4:38 PM

@beattie25 I think your being kind of harsh on simpson…
name me 10 outside of the top 5 teams who are better then simpson…

I havent seen simpson make that many mistakes that lead to goals tbf, I have on the other hand seen him make quite a few challenges that stop 1 on 1′s with the keeper and 2 or 3 goal line clearences…

we dont have a better RB and there’s more urgent matters then an RB

  • 50 Magickit // Jan 23, 2012 at 4:44 PM

pls drop ameobi immediately. he is clueless. -he likes offense foul and then complain to ref -he loss the ball too much too EASILY, and then he smiles !! -he never knows the offside rule !!! he always at the offside position !!!!! he is useless upfront ..! imagine any of the top 7 team can accept this kind of FW ???????????????

  • 51 king123 // Jan 23, 2012 at 4:46 PM

seems mariappa is highly rated by the watford fans, this appears to be his big break through season.

    http://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/sport/9487427.Newcastle_set_to_bid_for_Mariappa/

and if memory serves me well he was linked with us when joe kinear was manager as well, so its obvious we’ve been monitoring him for a while.

  • 52 Rosted Pork // Jan 23, 2012 at 4:47 PM

i wouldnt sell simo. he is quality

  • 53 Rotonda heights // Jan 23, 2012 at 4:58 PM

I think simpson would be best served as a sweeper second central defender behind a big guy in the air.
He kinda did that at Arsenal last year and was superb. However, as a full back he lacks the composure and skill to drive any attacks. I think either santon coming across to right back or tavernier are better footballing options as full back.

Would love to have seen m’biwa and cissoko come in, but after cisse mustn’t be too greedy.

  • 54 spenaldinho // Jan 23, 2012 at 5:03 PM

  • 55 Mancgeordie // Jan 23, 2012 at 5:11 PM

I think simo is alright an average prem rb he has improved so much over the past 2 years would have loved to see cissokho come in though just to see if that competition for places between the 4 for the 2 places might have raised there game

  • 56 Ollie666 // Jan 23, 2012 at 5:16 PM

    Team for next season
    Krul
    Simpson Saylor Colo Santoon
    HBA Cabaye Tiote Jonas
    Ba Cisse

Bench : Elliot, new CB, Tav, Guthrie, Vuckic, Best, Sammy

  • 57 Irie-Magpie // Jan 23, 2012 at 5:25 PM

Well done Benny, now all we need is our Dembas’ to come back so he can play with strikers who can read his runs (No disrespect to Best or Shola)..
@Beattie25 the Simmo argument is an old one to be honest, we all know that until benny moved to the right side most teams won’t worry about us mounting an attack down the right because they know Simmo (backup RB at best) can’t start one.
Micah Richards yesterday was always causing trouble for.

  • 58 Dannyo // Jan 23, 2012 at 5:26 PM

I’ve read some people saying they think Mariappa is pap. But lots of newspapers linking us with him is saying he’s one of the top performers in the Championship this season.
Have to remind ppl tho, we’re in for him due to us needing cover.
Imo, we don’t need another who’s a top established player, it means splashing cash on a player who’ll atleast start on the bench.
Besides, we need strength in depth, we don’t need to replace any CBs. Every CB has been solid overall this season.
Spend little money on CB, add that french fella on RW/Striker position, then we’re more than sorted for the remaineder of the season.

  • 59 Dannyo // Jan 23, 2012 at 5:29 PM

Watford has turned down our offer lads.

  • 60 LewSpi // Jan 23, 2012 at 5:30 PM

It’s nice to see that peoples ‘fantasy teams’ for next season don’t include any new players

  • 61 Irie-Magpie // Jan 23, 2012 at 5:31 PM

    @Dannyo,
Agreed, people are forgetting this main fact, Saylor is set to come back and all we need is just cover until then and we’ll revisit it in the summer.

  • 62 Rotonda heights // Jan 23, 2012 at 5:33 PM

I think maybe fulham was a blessing in some ways.
it showed that we possibly have the 2 slowest turning central defs in the epl in colo and willo. Don’t get me wrong, I love colo, but either we should ditch the high line or find some very quick jet heeled defs.

perch as a Dm could just come in to his own. it was a great bit of skill to get away from 2 defs in his own half and help set up ben arfa for his consolation goal.

  • 63 Rotonda heights // Jan 23, 2012 at 5:36 PM

    spenaldinho

that’s a horrible team, certain defeat there. At least have abeid and ferguson

  • 64 toonpanda18 // Jan 23, 2012 at 5:40 PM

i think perch did well when he came on and was farily solid but for me willo has to be used as cover only.
Other teams will know are weakness and getting behind are slow cb’s. im not sayin willo hasnt been good for us but he is just not good enough for a start so getting someone like douglas would be perfect.

  • 65 Magpies-till-d3ath // Jan 23, 2012 at 5:46 PM

Hopefully we go for mbiwa then!

  • 66 check the toastie // Jan 23, 2012 at 5:56 PM

On Benny i think he is genuinely top class, could play for any club when fully fit, god knows how much it would cost to get a like for like player, we got him cheap because it seemed he had an attitude problem in france, however he just loves the Toon, i would say he would be my biggest miss if he was to leave the club, above Tiote and collo, and IMO more difficult to replace than them two as he is a special footballer.

  • 67 darko // Jan 23, 2012 at 5:57 PM

I dont get the ‘we just need cover’ thing. If somebody can improve the team and is affordable then why not buy? Is Cabaye better than Nolan or is Ba better than Best/Shola? Yeah they are, and they improve the team. I dont know much about Mariappa but if he only offers cover then whatever we spend would be wasted IMO. Competion rather than cover for me.

  • 68 check the toastie // Jan 23, 2012 at 5:58 PM

  • 72 toonpanda18 // Jan 23, 2012 at 6:01 PM

willo for me is defiently cover rather than competition.

  • 73 check the toastie // Jan 23, 2012 at 6:03 PM

gotta say drooling about Benny Ba and Cisse up top together, think Pardew might not have the bottle to play all three, but with Cheik, Cabaye or Guthrie and Jonas working hard behind i think we should be able to cope its not like we will be carrying a really immobile lazy forward who lets centre backs consistently bring the ball out.

rknufc, not if you’re not a season ticket holder.

  • 88 hainesy // Jan 23, 2012 at 6:50 PM

Mariappa would be a very good signing!

He’s got the things our other CB’s don’t have and the others have what he doesn’t. Having a couple of centre backs that read the game the same way but have different qualities is a bonus.

I’d love to see him and Knockaert come in. That would be an absolutely phenomenal window. No one could disagree with that. If they did they’d be one of the reasons we’re such ‘deluded fans’.

  • 89 Marty-Toon // Jan 23, 2012 at 6:51 PM

Being slow has gotta be an issue!
Why did Willo get so close to his man?
He has a poor turn of pace so he shouldn’t get so tight as Johnson left him for dead and the clumsiest of challenges he also made on the same guy in the box.
We got seriously found out as we did against Bolton last year and WBA this season.
Why isn’t Kadar in contention? He was highly rated last week by Donachie.
We could do with a pacey CB as Tayls is pretty but not available.
Although Willo is decent defender and good in the air he and Collo lack pace.
Of course the problem the other day was Santon going walkabout up the line and not covering back, leaving Collo to cover for him and thus the defence was open wide for a bus to drive thru.
    Hope we learn from it.

  • 90 hainesy // Jan 23, 2012 at 6:55 PM

More twitter rumours so probably not true but a rumour is picking up about a young lad called Nicolas Mirin?

He’s an u-21 french international and could fit the mould? No reason for it not to be true so we can’t disregard it completely although it’s highly unlikely.

  • 91 Dannyo // Jan 23, 2012 at 7:00 PM

    Mangala for NUFC?
He signed for Porto in the summer, has had 4 appearances, but he’s only 20 years old… He’ll have loads of chances at Porto, he’s young. They signed him for £5 mill too.
Why oh why would we go for him Burnsie Ben?
I think your “source” is taking u for a spin…

  • 92 davybtoon // Jan 23, 2012 at 7:05 PM

hainsey nicolas isimat-mirin defo fits the profile of what we look for

  • 94 Dannyo // Jan 23, 2012 at 7:10 PM

    @davy
Ye, but, it’s easy to link us with players now that most people know that Charnley is in France.
And we just had a bid rejected from Watford.
I dunno mate, but if we were going for these young types, i’d except them to be even younger, and then i cannot see how they’d be closer to the first team than Streete.

  • 97 hainesy // Jan 23, 2012 at 7:20 PM

M’Baye Niang is such an unbelievable prospect! I honestly think he’s the next Henry. We’re not interested to my knowledge but he’s destined to be a star!

  • 98 hainesy // Jan 23, 2012 at 7:22 PM

    toonarmy09 –
He play for Valenciennes in Ligue 1, I don’t think we really know too much about him but he fits the frame of young with potential. Plus he’s not at a huge club so they may take less and he may be drawn to us as a big side.

  • 99 JackButler // Jan 23, 2012 at 7:28 PM

I see that Marveuax could be back towards the end of next month, he’s flown out with the rest of the squad and is said to be making ‘Good progress’.

Can’t wait to have him back as he offers a real threat and he lit a fire under Jonas’s arse

  • 100 toonarmy09 // Jan 23, 2012 at 7:29 PM

  • 107 check the toastie // Jan 23, 2012 at 8:06 PM

Cisse came on and within 30 secs showed some sharp skill set up Ba who hit crossbar with header, was a pretty good game and cisse looks more than just a poacher, very sharp, think they will play really well with each other, Cisse only got 20mins. hopefully they lose their next match, will see them both back for blackburn away maybe if they dont make it thru their group.

  • 108 Dannyo // Jan 23, 2012 at 8:13 PM

And BurnsieBen comes out saying he’s been hacked, lol.
    Thought so, not like him.

  • 109 JackButler // Jan 23, 2012 at 8:22 PM

toonthompson – When Cisse came on he looked good, set up Ba with a great cross but he hit the bar, up until Cisse came on Ba was quiet tbh, it was the other lad Mayuke that we were linked with that stole the show with two goals

  • 110 davybtoon // Jan 23, 2012 at 8:33 PM

I highly doubt we are signing Mangala since Porto just bought him last summer for €6.5 mil. If there is any truth in him being in Newcastle, maybe we are talking about a season long loan deal. It is difficult to get any player in january for reasonbly money anyway.

  • 116 Dannyo // Jan 23, 2012 at 8:56 PM

But we won’t know until we see a face at the grounds or something official from the webby.

anyone know if its true that DL has flown out to france to join lee chornley in transfer negotiations ?

  • 121 Beattie25 // Jan 23, 2012 at 9:13 PM

    Isn’t it obvious?

Sky Sports advertise that Newcastle are after (insert name) and then post a link to Sky Bet. They get a flood of bets and there is no truth in the story and thus they make a fortune.

Anyway I was challanged to name 10 right backs better than Simmo that play for teams outside the top 5 after I originally stated that there are 15 better right backs in the prem. That left me with slim pickings but managed to name 10. Some of these play in multiple positions but here I go:

    Alan Hutton – Aston Villa
    Gretar Steinsson – Bolton
    Seamus Coleman – Everton
    Johnny Heitinga – Everton
    Steven Kelly – Fulham
    Martin Kelly – Liverpool
    Glen Johnson – Liverpool
    Davide Santon – Newcastle
    Kyle Naughton – Norwich
Needum Onuha – QPR (when he signs)

I know i’ll get ripped for some of these but I still think RB is our weakest position. No offence to Simmo but he doesn’t have the pace or technical skill for a modern full back. I believe he needs replacing (whether or not it is an old argument) sooner rather than later. Why we haven’t gone for Needum Onuha is beyond me and I am sure many share my sentiments. He could easily be our first team RB and provide the cover for CB we need. But I am sure that Pards, Carr, Del Boy and MA hae got plans…

We should get Needum Onouha and Eric Pieters to be our full backs and offer the CB cover and turn Davide Santon into the RW version of Bale!! Lovely

All the love he got from the club and supporters during his injury, i believe is something he will never forget.
If he should get sold, it wouldonly be because MA got a silly offer, and Benny was forced to leave!
The prize on Benny, when he is en 100% topform, IMO..
    at least 25 mill

  • 130 LenDixon // Jan 23, 2012 at 9:41 PM

Ben Arfa is our shining light. f#ck all you haters. Demba Ba is banging them in now but what happens next season when he doesn’t have the golden touch? Form is temporary, class is permanent. No one else in our team can do what Ben Arfa does.

Though i do believe that Demba Ba will continue to knock them in.. As will Cissé

  • 134 Toonboy_83 // Jan 23, 2012 at 9:51 PM

Guys do you honestly think that if a player was to leave that they wouldn’t go to Tenerife? It’s literally a 3 hour trip MAXIMUM to the UK or to France or to any other club to do a deal. And just because they’re not in the pictures doesn’t mean they’re not there. Pappa Cisse flew all the way from Dakar to get a deal done so I’m pretty sure Collo or HBA would fly from Tenerife to do a deal if they had to.

They’ve gone to Tenerife not bloody mars.

  • 135 LenDixon // Jan 23, 2012 at 10:01 PM

    Exactly danish!
It frustrates me to hell when people on here criticise Ben Arfa and back Pardew when he consistently leaves him to rot on the bench for the likes of Obertan and youknowwhat up front. The guy was injured for a year and ppl have a go at him when he loses the ball when he tries to make something happen! I’d like to see any of u lot do nothing for a year then expect to do something to a high standard!

  • 136 Jail for Ashley // Jan 23, 2012 at 10:07 PM

    Len,
I dont think Pards has left him to rot on the bench,he’s obviously been building his strength and confidence up bit by bit,you mention your self that he was injured for a year that takes some coming back from.Apart from the odd slip up,which in an interview at the start of the season he said could happen, you have to take your hat off to the manager for doing a great job.

  • 137 Magpies-till-d3ath // Jan 23, 2012 at 10:08 PM

If you read arfas quote on psg.it basicly opens a door saying he is one of few playets that the top french side could attract and he is welcome to a move whilst other none french big names would snub the frnch division.

  • 144 jayjay // Jan 24, 2012 at 1:59 AM

Rod997 no offense but you should work on your french cause you translated it wrong, he never said that, he says that great players arent attracted to the french league, and it s different for him cause he s french, but he s not mentioning that he plans to play for psg at any moment
