Newcastle Offer For Center-Back Turned Down

It seems that Watford have turned down Newcastle’s bid of around £2M for their 25 year-old center-back Adrian Mariappa.

Adrian Mariappa – £2M offer turned down by Watford

There was a report in the Sunday Sun two days ago that Newcastle would try to bring in the player this week, and it seems some of their initial and top targets like James Tomkins of West Ham were not available in January.

Newcastle need a center-back in during the month in case either Coloccini or Williamson are injured, but we don’t think Newcastle will go too much higher for Mariappa, and certainly it would seem £3M would be the absolute limit.

That’s the amount the Sunday Sun was reporting he would cost, but of course it doesn’t harm much to go in with a lower offer first – Watford may even have accepted it.

Mariappa would appear to be coming in as a squad player, since Williamson and Coloccini are expected to be the center-backs through the end of the season.

Mariappa has only 18 months left on his Vicarage Road contract and so Newcastle would be silly to bid a high price for the player.

Next season Steven Taylor, who was in top form at the beginning of the season before he ruptured his Achilles, will be back,  and it seems the plan is for Newcastle to bring in another center-back this summer, when some of their top targets should be available.

Mariappa almost seems a stop gap center-back for this season, but if the club were going to do that, you wonder why they didn’t try to get a player in on loan.

Maybe that’s because he wouldn’t play much – unless Williamson or Coloccini were injured.

It will be interesting to see if Newcastle go back in with a higher offer for the 5’11” center-back, who is of Fijian and Congolese ancestry, and we must remember there’s only 7 days left in the transfer window.

Mariatta has played for Watford his whole career, and he has made 231 appearances for the club with 3 goals – and we wonder if he would be willing to come to Newcastle to be back-up center-back, when he currently plays every game for Watford?

Of course his wages would be at least doubled, so maybe the answer to that is yes.

What do you think?

He isn’t a bad player, if we do sign him, I expect him to be competing for a first team place within a couple of months. He’s strong, reads the game well, has good positional sense. A good old fashioned no-nonsense centre half.

colo is world class and williamson is a good fill in centreback i think but both of them aren’t blessed with alot of pace. We play a very high back line so i really think we should be looking for a pacey CB. Im not sure how fast mariappa is.

I never accepted what Bassong then do but after all Newcastle must going forward and buying some championship player for much money than his cost is not what the club need. We should swallow our pride from time to time.

Mbiwa must be too pricey. He would be a steal at $5M. In FIFA I had to pay $22M to get him 🙂

Bassong would be good I agree we need pace at the back desperately at times.. remember long and odemwingie tearin us up?? as for forgiving bassong never was upset with him in the first place.. at such a young stage in his career he needed to continue compete at the top level – – too bad is hasnt quite worked out for him!

5’11”? One of the main reasons our defence couldn’t cope at Norwich, was because of a lack of height in defence. It strikes me as ridiculous that we’d pay £3 million plus, for a 25 year old Championship player who (in defender’s terms) is a bit of a short arse!
