Ajax Will Sell Newcastle Target Jan Vertonghen This Summer

One of the players Newcastle will bring in over the summer is a top center-back.

Jan Vertonghen – will be sold in the summer

The work going on now to bring in Adrian Mariappa is as cover in case one of out two center-backs are injured through the end of the season, because we’ve already proved this season we have very little cover at the club at the moment.

One of the players Newcastle have been interested in is 24 year-old Jan Vertonghen of Ajax, although the £10M fee that was mentioned a little high.

Jan has only 18 months left on his contract, and the Ajax manager Frank de Boer – one of the great de Boer brothers (Ronald was the other) has said today that they will need to sell him in the summer if he doesn’t sign a new deal.

But the fee will not be £10M with only one year left on his contract, but it seems that Arsenal, Tottenham and  Manchester United may also be interested in the 6’3″ Belgium International.

This is what Frank told Eredivisie Live:

“We know that his contract expires in 2013,”  “So it’s either renew or relocate to a good foreign club, where Ajax would also benefit from a transfer fee.”

“We already told Jan last year in Turkey that we are keen to hold on to him. We will open talks early in March to discuss a new deal.”

Vertonghen joined Ajax back in 2003 as a 16 year-old and he a left-footed player who usually plays at center back, but can also play anywhere on the left side or even in defensive midfield.

The Sint-Niklaas, Belgium born player has played 201 times for Ajax with 23 goals, and he also played 20 times for Eredivise club RKC Waalwijk in 2006-1007 with 3 goals.

Jan has played 35 times for Belgium with 2 goals and played 23 times for the Belgium U21 suide.

He would be a good buy for Newcatsle but the fee may be raised if indeed some other top clubs are interested in the ald.

Comments welcome.

Deffo a good buy, but does he add different strengths to our center half positions?
Except for that, he’s an immense player and great going forward too.

I am from Belgium and I always have a mixed feeling about Vertonghen. As a person I do not like him at all and I also think he is overrated. He can play good and surely has got qualities but I don’t think he will be like Vermaelen for Arsenal.

His strong points are his spirit (he always gives 150%), he has got a fantastic pass and shot and he can go forward.

His lesser points are for me his defending as a CB and his positioning. In our national team he is always playing as LB. I watch a lot of Dutch football too and this season he has not impressed at all and already had lots of critics this season.

If I should go for a CB I would go for someone else.

I guess more than any one , the premier league is the toughest for overseas defenders , cant think of any overseas def comin in performing straight away in recent times ,so i d prefer some big english based defender .. ..

Also, I’m gonna get crucified for saying this! But i wouldn’t mind seeing obertan get a start on the left over Jonas! He played left at man utd and at bordeaux, he also switched to the left in a couple games this season for the toon! Just looking at the stats, in 5 games less, Obertan has the same amount of assists, has a better pass completion rate, a more effective run completion rate and has created more chances! Now for me, our strongest side is Marveaux, Cabaye, Tiote and Ben Arfa in midfield with The dembas upfront, but obviously Marveaux is out for a while! Just tired of our strikers getting no service from the left midfielder! True he worked hard when Taylor was at left back, but santon plays now, yet we get little more of him going forward!

jayphoto 9 – don’t start people off! Everyone knows Shola is useless, slow, lazy, doesn’t try, can’t score goals , can’t make assists, hate him, shoot him, never wear black and white again blah blah.
(Personally, I don’t think he’s useless and would be happy for him to be 3rd/ 4th choice striker and get 20 minutes as and when necessary. Oops, now I’m at it!)

magpie6699 exactly man, shola is 4th choice behind the dembas and Best in a team that quite often will play only 1 upfront! Don’t get why he’s an issue, can’t blame the lad because he’s picked when we don’t have any1 else!

Personally I would say give it a try – BUT not within our current setup. AP has to abandon his dinosaur 4-4-2 formation and switch for something more modern for that to work.

A 4-2-3-1 should suite us well. But since we just bought Papisto I don’t think that is going to happen.

We might as well prepare us for another season of 4-4-2.

Alderweireld is not bad as CB. But this year he has not impressed either. The same as Vertonghe; lots of critics as CB duo of Ajax. One of the points often mentionned is that they huild up is way too slow.

In the Belgian team he often needs to play as RB, he does okay there but not brilliant. We have got fantastic players in Belgium, but we lack a proper LB and RB. We also miss a goal scoring striker, for the rest we have got a fantastic team!

If I had to choose a Belgian CB to go for; I would take Kompany, Vermaelen and as 3rd I would go for Lombaerts (Zenit). But I’m afraid none of those will ever play for Newcastle ;-).

GeordieToon89, and Matty Phillips and Nathan Redmond are read for first team action for NUFC?

Obertan needs confidence for sure – so I would propose AP did the same with Obertan as he did with HBA. Bench him until he’s ready. I think that was AP’s own words…

Obafan@8…thanks for your insight and articulate summary of a player I haven’t seen much of yet notice his name forever croppoing up in “dream” signing lists on this blog. Maybe, you tempered some of the “hypers” with your observations?
Having said that, your blog name, if it is a play on words regarding our debate-provoking right winger, may lessen your credibility in assessing Jan Vertigo 😉

@jesperfuglsang I dunno about 4-4-2, Ba actually prefers to play deep and left, he could be effective in a 4-2-3-1 formation I think! think for now we;ll be stuck with 4.4.2, but we looked much stronger at 4-3-3 in the first half against fulham! If we had 4-3-3 with HBA right, Ba left and Papiss centre, with Jonas, Cabaye and Tiote behind, that would be some line up!

On a related note to someone mentioning Philippe Albert as an influence for making Belgian Newcastle fans, we should send a scouting mission out to Peru. Solano is idolised there so we could probably beat off the top clubs for their most-talented players, should the fancy take us that way. Just a thought.

A 4-3-3 with that setup as you just mentioned would work I think. And yes we definitely looked much better playing 4-3-3 than 4-4-2. I don’t think we have looked good in many games playing 4-4-2, simply because we don’t have the right players for it – we look out of balance and we end up playing hoof ball must of the times.

I would like AP to try experimenting a bit more with 4-3-3 and even 4-2-3-1 or else I think he should go looking for some new players that’s fits his current dinosaur formation 😉

    Maybe some Brits 😉 hehe

not just Belgian Centre halfs, but right across all the positions! Chelsea are about to sign DeBruyne and he is absolute quality! Chelsea also took the goalkeeper Courtois whos doing well on loan at Athletico Madrid! Add that to the 2 ajax centrehalfs, Lukaku, Eden Hazard, Thorgan Hazard(only 18, at Lens, apparantly he’s going to be immense) and they certainly are going to have a team! Makes you question how a country with a population of about 8% of england can bring through so many talents yet we bring through 1 or 2 top talents every 5 years!

de Bruyne, I don’t know. It really depends on the price – he might have potential but you never know if he’s going to live up to it. He doesn’t look that quality at the moment.

And I cannot see him getting into the Chelsea side anytime soon. Would be better for his career to go some place else.
