Equatorial Guinea pulled off a shock result tonight, when they beat Senegal 2-1 at the Estadio de Bata in Bata
Demba Ba – Senegal beaten – cannot advance from their group
Both Newcastle strikers Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse started the game up front for Senegal.
Equatorial Guinea went two goals up with goals from C. Katongo after 54 mins and then the second from Randy after 62 mins, and then Moussa Sow pulled one back for Senegal late in the game after 89 minutes.
It looks like Papiss Cisse played the whole game but Demba Ba was substituted after 58 minutes.
Senegal had gone down to a shock 2-1 defeat to Zambia in their first game in group A last Sunday, but now they are bottom of their group with zero points, and cannot qualify for the knock-out rounds.
Before the game Demba Ba had tweeted this:
“We win we’r still in! We lose we’r out! As simple as that!!!!!!”
Equatorial Guinea, one of the host countries, top the group with 6 points and Zambia are in second place on 4 points.
The qualification process involves ten groups of four, one of which was reduced to a group of three after the withdrawal of Mauritania, and one group of five.
The top team from each group goes through to the elimination rounds, as well as the second placed team from the group of five, and also the best two best second placed teams also qualify.
Senegal play Libya on Sunday evening in their final group game, and then the two Newcastle strikers will be heading home to Tyneside, and can presumably play against Aston Villa a week on Sunday at St. James’ Park, or even at Blackburn next Wednesday night.
It’s tough luck on the two strikers, but it means they will only miss four games in total, two Premier League games – QPR and Fulham – and two FA Cup ties – Blackburn and Brighton.
In the other game in Group A Zambia drew with Libya 2-2 in the previous game on the same field, with the scores being 1-1 at the half. Libya were the surprise qualifiers after all the turmoil in that country, preceding the Championship.
The first game was delayed for an hour and 15 minutes because of heavy rains in Bata, so the Senegal – Equatorial Guinea game was also put back.
Tomorrow night Cheick Tiote and the Ivory Coast play Burkina Faso at the Nuevo Estadio de Malabo in Malabo, after winning their first game 1-0 against Sudan, with the winner coming from Didier Drogba.
