Newcastle United have apparently shown an interest in Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez, according to local reports in Lancashire.
Jay Rodriquez – Newcastle may go after him this summer
Newcastle are said to have made tentative inquiries about the 22 year-old, who has scored 14 goals in 32 appearances for Burnley this season.
Alan Pardew is said to have attended the game at Middlesbrough less than two weeks ago, although he could also have been checking on Middlesbrough defender and Australian International Rhys Williams.
Jay was born in Burnley of Spanish parents and he joined Burnley as a 12 year-old back in 2000, and he has one cap at the England U21 level.
Burnley have told Newcastle they will not sell their 6’1″ star striker in January, which is hardly surprising with Burnley in 12th position in the Championship, but still only 3 points from a play-off position.
If Rodriguez keeps up his good form and goal-scoring, then Newcastle may be back in the summer, although the signing of Papiss Cisse from SC Freiburg may see Newcastle cool their interest in the player.
Burnely manager Eddie Howe had this to say about a player whose contract has just 18 months to run:
“All the lads that are coming out of contract in the next 18months we have to make sure, as a club, we are on the ball,” “We will look to move on them.”
If Jay does not sign a new deal by this summer Newcastle could possibly get him at a reduced price.
And with Peter Lovenkrands’ contract running out in the summer and not being renewed, Newcastle may want to bring in another striker in the summer, and that’s especially true if Newcastle qualify for Europe next season.
But it does look like Newcastle have done a lot of work in January in inquiring about possible summer targets, and we expect to see at least six new players bought in over the summer transfer window.
Newcastle are showing themselves very skilled and adept in the transfer market these days, and they certainly do their home-work on players.
Jay has had loan spells at Stirling Albion from 2007-2008 (12 appearances – 3 goals), and Barnsley in 2009-2010 (6 appearances – 1 goal), and he has played 118 times for Burnley with 34 goals.
