Newcastle Show Interest In Burnley Striker – A Summer Target?

Newcastle United have apparently shown an interest in Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez, according to local reports in Lancashire.

Jay Rodriquez – Newcastle may go after him this summer

Newcastle are said to have made tentative inquiries about the 22 year-old,  who has scored 14 goals in 32 appearances for Burnley this season.

Alan Pardew is said to have attended the game at Middlesbrough less than two weeks ago, although he could also have been checking on Middlesbrough defender and Australian International Rhys Williams.

Jay was born in Burnley of Spanish parents and he joined Burnley as a 12 year-old back in 2000, and he has one cap at the England U21 level.

Burnley have told Newcastle they will not sell their 6’1″ star striker in January, which is hardly surprising with Burnley in 12th position in the Championship, but still only 3 points from a play-off position.

If Rodriguez keeps up his good form and goal-scoring, then Newcastle may be back in the summer, although the signing of Papiss Cisse from SC Freiburg may see Newcastle cool their interest in the player.

Burnely manager Eddie Howe had this to say about a player whose contract has just 18 months to run:

“All the lads that are coming out of contract in the next 18months we have to make sure, as a club, we are on the ball,” “We will look to move on them.”

If Jay does not sign a new deal by this summer Newcastle could possibly get him at a reduced price.

And with Peter Lovenkrands’ contract running out in the summer and not being renewed, Newcastle may want to bring in another striker in the summer, and that’s especially true  if Newcastle qualify for Europe next season.

But it does look like Newcastle have done a lot of work in January in inquiring about possible summer targets,  and we expect to see at least six new players bought in over the summer transfer window.

Newcastle are showing themselves very skilled and adept in the transfer market these days, and they certainly do their home-work on players.

Jay has had loan spells at Stirling Albion from 2007-2008 (12 appearances – 3 goals),  and Barnsley in 2009-2010 (6 appearances – 1 goal), and he has played 118 times for Burnley with 34 goals.

i have no critism of our transfer policy, our scouting system or the players that we have brought in over the past 12months – HOWEVER – how can we pull off great signings such as Tiote, Marveux, Cabaye, Cisse, Abeid etc …….. but can not seem to locate a CB for cover at least. We need to find someone to play along side Colo until Saylor is fit, or simply someone better than Perch!

@Toon_Tom how about Mike Williamson to play alongside Colo till Saylor is fit? Of course if he or Colo get injured that’s when we need the back-up.

How can we not locate a CB for cover? The transfer window till has 6 days to go. We have centre back cover in Perch, Streete and Kadar, its actually getting a CB we want of the quality to take the club forward for a good price which is harder to acheive.

However, if they cant get a defender for the price THEY want to pay, then they simply wont get one. Its fair enough.

I find it quite promising that we are getting linked with strikers, I thought after Papiss that would be us, but seems we are still after a striker and a defender. Hopefully we’ll get both.

I simply cannot believe we do not have a player sorted for CB……………We have known for ages we need to strengthen that position, even when Saylor is in the team and as good as he is i always feel he will get some injury during the season.
We just need to look at what happened away at Norwich , we must have someone sorted!
Mind you i also agree with a few other comments that it will probably be a player we have not been linked with during the “madness window”
On a plus Ba and Cisse back for Monday morning

A good centre back and we are on course for Europe. If not, it’s gonna be hard.

If Pards really doesn’t rate Kadar, which deffo seems to be the case surely there’s somebody out there we can get on loan who can actress as cover, losing either Collo or Willo evidence has shown that it will cost us more games than we will win,it will be absolute suicide to think we can blag the rest of the season without cover, although if we do manage it you will have those on here saying it was a tactical master stroke by MA to wait until the summer.

Nimo – Yann M’Villa hes a player we have no chance what so ever of signing if we get him Tiote is 100% away as hes a direct replacemet and imo hes better hes supposed to be the new Vieira of french football and would cost so much more than 7.5million

    @ nimo

I don’t think there is a player called Jan Villa – and definitely not one worth £ 7.5 mil 😉

Maybe your friend is misinformed – maybe what he heard was that we have placed a bit for Jan Vertonghen.

I don’t know 🙂 just trying to help here hehe…

Don’t push the panic button yet. Just like the Cisse deal, I’m sure the CB signing will come out of nowhere. Mariappa could be a diversion (low bid they know will be denied) or MA and AP figured if we can get him one the cheap, why not do it.

Super Shearer – thats what i mean, we either need a CB to play alongside Colo (who is better than Williamson – or a CB for cover (who is better than Perch)

    In: Douglas, Cisse, Elia
    Out: Smith, Obertan, Forster

That would be an unbelievable transfer window for us!

I can’t see Rodriguez getting a game here if he was to sign, he’d be at least the 4th choice striker behind Best….he looks like a better version of a Championship Leon Best.
As for a Centre back, why can’t we just bring in Samba, who’s clearly stated he’d like to leave Blackburn, let’s rub it into the Spuds’ fans’ faces for a second time……
