Newcastle Place Improved Offer For Center-Back

Newcastle have made an improved offer for Watford center-back Adrian Mariappa.

Adrian Mariappa third bid in – the last one?

That’s according to the Daily Mirror today, and if true that would be Newcastle’s third offer for the 25 year-old.

Newcastle were said to have bid around £2M earlier in the week after their initial offer of £750K for the player was dismissed out of hand and derided by Watford manager Sean Dyche, who seemed to be insulted by the bid.

With the transfer window running out early next week, there is not much time to get in a new center-back, and Newcastle have until Tuesday evening to do it..

The Newcastle Journal are reporting today the offer is in the region of £2.5M and it is take it or leave it offer, but its’ not the £4M that Watford seem to value the player at.

Swansea City and Bolton Wanderers are also said to be interested in the player, but whether any bids have come in from those two Premier League clubs, we don’t know, and it would be surprising if either club would bid higher than Newcastle for the player.

However, there is late news this morning that Swansea are about to bid 3.5M for Mariappa, but it’s hard to know if that report in GOAL is true.

Adrian has played 231 times for Watford with 3 goals and he is player Newcastle are hoping will improve if he gets a chance in the Premier League, much like  what another former Watford player, Mike Williamson, has done on Tyneside.

Newcastle are looking for cover at center-back before the transfer window closes, and will bring in another defender in the summer.

That’s when some of their top targets could be available like James Tomkins of West Ham, Ajax’s Jan Vertonghen or Montpellier captain Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, who can play anywhere across the back four.

Comments welcome.

Please God NO! If we want to move forward we don’t need players not proven in top level. I may sound prejudiced but this move are big risk which the club doesn’t need to do especially at this very moment.

we will get Douglas, because there are no rumours about signing him. Twente doesn’t want to lose him for free.

I think AP is getting predictable. He always say the opposite:
Cabaye not fit to play – Cabaye played.
Guthrie not 100% to play – Guthrie played
    now:
Cisse unsure when his debut is – he will definitely play.

    @spitfire
U’re forgetting that we need backup, not replacements.
How is a Watford player a bigger risk than getting someone abroad?
Atleast he’s used to the English tempo and physicality.

Mariappa at 2.5m isn’t a bad deal actually! The lad is solid, nothing spectacular but he’s a defender who reads the game well similar to collo (nowhere near as good mind) rather than a body on the line defender like Taylor! Just makes you think though, we’re pretty nailed on to sign a centre half in the summer, and anyone we sign in january will be obviously here for longer than 6 months? Say for example we sign Mariappa now and Tompkins in the summer, that gives us willo, collo, taylor, mariappa and tompkins…..5 centre halves? can’t see it myself, 1 of them will be off! (half expect it to be willo….but just praying it isn’t collocini!)

Unless we are preparing for european competition and attacking all domestic competitions, then we will need 4 good CB. It’s just too many games for just 3 good CB, not including if they get call for international duties.

At 2.5mil it could be a good deal for us, he can play at centre half and at right back so give us more options and cover, but I would prefer us to try to get Douglas in, he’s only got 6 months on his contract and is a better player. But then again it’s impossible to question the judgement of the club when it come to our targets as they definitely know what they are doing in the market

The great thing is that we have two top class youngsters coming through the ranks in Tavernier and Streete, would not be surprised if both we pushing for a 1st team place in the next 12/18 months

This is just Poor. Just really Poor.

I have watched him a few times this season and he is ”Ok” at best,

But then again I dont think that we need a douglas type player either. For me Samba is the best option and would be win win, as with him we are a serious european contender. Yes hes a bit older but sign him up for say £7 mil then get a young cb with potential in the summer.

Iff we add elia or Hoilett, we can challenge top 4 I really believ that,

But this gy is just not what we need even as cover, very poor, very very poor.

Colo is COLOssus but whats the other options? Saylor is injury prone. Willo is good as back up but not for regular… Do I want back up? No! I prefer Bassong on loan untill the summer and then to make a move for Douglas, Vertongen or someone else. Besides championship player for premier league team backup… Does this sound good for you?

    Some news from ESPN:

Newcastle are keen on bringing Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez to St James’ Park, with a £5 million summer move mooted … Watford’s Adrian Mariappa will hand in a transfer request amid interest from the Magpies …

Douglas would be the 1 for me to be honest! He’s a better player than vertonghan, just see’s red here and there! Twente are much more defensively sound than ajax and douglas is Twentes best centre half, vertonghan is ajax’s second best behind alderweireld!

I have a pal who supports Watford and is an ex pro who believes Mariappa is a top player and he is highly rated by the fans.

Not sure he’s as good as Collo or Williamson, but if the club think he’s worth a couple of million quid who are we to argue.

really like the Jay Rodriguez link! exactly the kind of squad player we need! If our 4 forwards were Cisse, Ba, Rodriguez and Best (with shola a possible 5th choice) that gives us great depth in the striking area with different horses for courses where needed! That lads got all kinds of potential and played well when only 20 in the premier league, honestly surprised no1 has taken him on yet!

Dont look like we have anything coming through after 6 – 0 thrashing by Man U reserves last night, so its a definite case of bringing someone in, we have a lot of games before the seasons end, and if Collo’s got a groin problem then we could well and truly be up to our necks in it having to rely on the likes of Perch.

Redondo About Kadar -as I see they will sell him. Hes contract runs out in summer, and yet no chance for him to play. Hes not even in the reserve squad vs MU so he must be traeling somewhere to be sold. I heared Kilmarnock and Bundesliga II , but only gossips.

Don’t like how this is dragging on, which is the last NUFC wants, before us no one was interested now we have swansea and bolton (apparently) sniffing around hence Watford playing hard ball for a player that they only give biyearly contracts.. Watford think we’re chmups… 4mil for cover.
