It was certainly a miserable African Cup of Nations for Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse as Senegal were surprisingly beaten 2-1 by Libya last night in Estadio de Bata in Bata, in the final qualifying game of Group A.
Papiss Cisse in action
Ihab Bouseffi scored both goals for Libya and it meant Senegal lost all their three group games by a score of 2-1 – to Zambia, Equatorial Guinea and Libya.
The other game was drawn between Zambia and Equatorial Guinea, and both those teams progress to the knockout rounds with 7 points and 6 points respectively.
Libya did well in the group to win and draw a game, but Senegal finished bottom of their group with no points from their three games.
After Bouseffi had put Libya ahead in the 5th minute, Deme N’Diaye equalized just six minutes later for Senegal, but then Bouseffi got the winner with just 6 minutes to play.
Demba Ba started the game for Senegal and was replaced at the start of the second half by his new Newcastle team-mate Papiss Cisse.
So the fact that both strikers only played a half, will hopefully mean they will be fit and ready to play at Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night – we need them.
Both players will be jetting back to Newcastle today – an no injuries were reported last night.
